Plot Summary

Part romantic thriller, part political drama, The Situation is the first U.S. feature film to confront America’s occupation in the Middle East, exploring one of the countless stories hidden behind the headlines of the War on Terror. When Anna (Connie Nielsen), an American journalist, travels to Iraq to report on the conflict, she quickly becomes familiar with the grim day-to-day realities of the conflict. After an Iraqi leader and friend is assassinated, she is determined to uncover the truth behind his death. As she becomes more entrenched, Anna finds herself pulled between the affections of an American intelligence official (Damian Lewis) and Zaid (Mido Hamada), a young Iraqi photographer. After the death of an Iraqi boy at the hands of American soldiers, a perilous chain of events is set off that exposes corrupt associations, blurs the lines of justice, and ultimately leads Anna into grave danger.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Set in wartime Iraq, The Situation is exploitation cinema of the most narcoleptic kind. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: An overstuffed, unengaging drama. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 6, 2009

Rotten: The Situation is promoting itself as the first American dramatic feature film to deal with the occupation of Iraq. While that may be true, it turns out not to matter that much. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Haas here imagines Iraq as the sun-bleached setting for an especially bleak film noir, in which love is treacherous, good intentions lead you-know-where and the line between good and evil is always shifting. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jun 24, 2010

Great Film!

This film is brilliant!! It gives the audience a better understanding of what life is currently like in the Middle East. Both the writing and acting is breath-taking. Anna's determination to uncover the truth behind her friend's assassination is chilling.

Very realistic

Thank you for shooting a movie about Iraq that is very realistic to the pointed topics and conditions. You've hit the nail on the head with that. The discussions of the men and down to the tea served was excellent. I have been in Iraq and the Middle East working since 2006 and its the best film I have yet seen that holds it all together true. By the way, I did not like Hurt Locker. Most maybe did, but those of us here didn't find value in its character...too Hollywood. My two cents or Dinar.
