I bought this movie by mistake...
...because I accidentally clicked the buy movie button instead of the preview button. So, my wife and I decided to make lemonade and watch it anyway. It starts out fine, I've always been a fan of dark satire. The acting is great, and you couldn't hope for a better cast. The problem comes about 2/3 through the film when the writing completely falls apart and it seems like everyone is just improving their way through the rest of the film. By the end, all I could think was POOR GLENN CLOSE! This great actress put up a great struggle to do something with a character that has one of the WORST monologues in the history of bad monologues, and ends up embarrassing herself because instead of finishing the script, the writer(s) took a vacation. Anyhow, this film represents a ton of wasted talent. If I ever watch it again, and I own it now, so I probably will, I'll make sure to stop it right around the scene when Bette Midler and Nicole Kidman decide to start spying on the men of Stepford, and then I'll move on to some good satire, like LA Story or N.B.K.
Don't expect the original
Really quite cute. MUCH more campy than the original. I believe they understood the ludicrousness of the story and turned it into the satiric social metaphor it was intended to be. The original film is pretty dry and tries to make a rather fantastical idea seem feasible. I was entertained, but not terribly impressed. In my opinion, the story is not intended to frighten the listener, but to educate on the dangers of what we might consider "perfection". The 2004 version, I believe, is much more in-tune with that idea. It also deals with some of the ideas that the older version leaves hanging (although this new film deals with those ideas in a much more humourous way). All in all, I'd recommend this film over it's older version. I'm glad I bought it.
Pretty Funny!
I loved it the first time I saw it. It's a movie you'll want to watch over and over again!!
