Plot Summary
A sprawling epic of family, faith, power and oil, THERE WILL BE BLOOD is set on the incendiary frontier of California’s turn-of-the-century petroleum boom. The story chronicles the life and times of one Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis), who transforms himself from a down-and-out silver miner raising a son on his own into a self-made oil tycoon. When Plainview gets a mysterious tip-off that there’s a little town out West where an ocean of oil is oozing out of the ground, he heads with his son, H.W. (Dillon Freasier), to take their chances in dust-worn Little Boston. In this hardscrabble town, where the main excitement centers around the holy roller church of charismatic preacher Eli Sunday (Paul Dano), Plainview and H.W. make their lucky strike. But even as the well raises all of their fortunes, nothing will remain the same as conflicts escalate and every human value – love, hope, community, belief, ambition and even the bond between father and son – is imperiled by corruption, deception and the flow of oil.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: There Will Be Blood hits with hurricane force. Lovers of formula and sugarcoating will hate it. Screw them. In terms of excitement, imagination and rule-busting experimentation, it's a gusher.
Fresh: One of the most wholly original American movies ever made.
Fresh: Someday, we're probably going to look back at There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson's epic about greed, lies, manipulation and insanity, and call it his masterpiece.
Fresh: There Will Be Blood reminds us that the greatest screen performances don't settle for capturing one trait, a dominant emotion or an easy way in.

Best Film of 2007
This is an absolutely astonishing film. Paul Thomas Anderson takes the American Dream and twists it into a grueling nightmare. Daniel Day Lewis' much talked-about performance is certainly not to be missed, as it may be the best performance of his already stellar career. Unfortunately, brilliant performances by Paul Dano and young Dillon Freasier have gone largely overlooked, despite the obvious talent both actors bring to the film. Jonny Greenwood's chilling score (which was, regrettably, inelligible for the Academy Award) is the perfect compliment to this tale of the conflict between faith and ambition.
An American Classic
Out of any other film that was released last year, "There Will Be Blood" will be remembered the most for years to come. It's our generation's "time capsule" film. The epic scope of this monumentous masterwork will be talked about as one of the greatest films of all time. "There Will Be Blood" is an instant classic.
Outstanding film, but....
I feel sorry for the people who buy this movie on iTunes. Buy the DVD and watch it on a big screen in a dark room; if you think you're getting the experience on your iPod, you don't deserve to watch this film. Paul Thomas Anderson is one of America's best contemporary filmmakers--and this is his best film so far. The massive scale, the sheer ambition of the canvas, the towering performances, all of it comes together to make what some already call a masterpiece. 'There Will Be Blood' is one of the most important films of this decade.
