Plot Summary

“Such a fine line between stupid and clever.” “None more black.” “This one goes to 11.” Audiences didn’t quite know what to make of This is Spinal Tap when it first hit movie theaters in 1984. Was it a comedy, or a real-life documentary about a British heavy metal band on a disastrous comeback tour? Actually, it was something else entirely and the first of its kind: the “mockumentary.” Rob Reiner's directorial debut is the story of Spinal Tap, an aging group of rockers with one last shot at fame and glory. Called “the funniest movie ever made about rock and roll” (Newsweek) and ranked #1 on Entertainment Weekly’s “Top 50 Cult Films of All-Time,” it’s the comedy phenomenon that will rock your socks off.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It stays so wickedly close to the subject that it is very nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: For all its japes and jokes, the movie is really about exhaustion of the spirit: sitting in a bleak hotel suite at 4 a.m. with the bad taste of last night in the mouth and the feeling that tomorrow will not be a better day. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: For music biz insiders, This Is Spinal Tap is a vastly amusing satire of heavy metal bands. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: This Is Spinal Tap doesn't pull punches... – Jessica Winter, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

To all you students and twenty-somethings out there, this movie was our Napoleon Dynamite back in the day. The Tap's place in cinematic history is firmly secure. Now turn it up to 11...

Too funny.

If you've never been IN a band....you probably won't appreciate this as much as those of us who HAVE been in one. EVERY band (I don't care WHO you are) has had at LEAST one "Spinal Tap Moment" - I would be willing to guarantee that. I recommend this to all musicians, it's damn funny.
