Kids will be kids...
Funny to read the "criticism" of this groundbreaking Pixar short...i teach design to high school kids, all of whom were born well after this first was screened (I saw it at Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation long, long ago) and their criticism of the pioneers (in all the visual arts) is always trying, but to be expected. Being first--or at least one of the first--is always a risk, and Pixar was spending thousands upon thousands to create a product that they weren't even sure anyone would like. In the context of its time, this film was jaw dropping...what it lacked in ultra realistic texture maps and lighting it more than made up for in heart, story and just plain "newness." It was a huge hit on the big screen and it still translates well to the small one (I would be happy to see this rolling on the video i-dope the kids are furtively watching in class these days). Anyway, don't get ticked off at the kids for being kids...one day they'll be trying to explain what was so great about South Park to their own little know-it-alls who won't unplug from the Neural-Net long enough to watch the old light-emitting rot box...
First Pixar CG from 1988
I believe this is Pixar's first CG animation with a life like character. I remember seeing this back in the 80's and thought it was quite amazing. I looks crude by todays standards, but given the techology back then, it was pretty large accomplishment. Other reviewers don't understand this a historical cartoon.
