Plot Summary
Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.

Fresh: The tense verbal comedy of Mattie's early negotiation with a Fort Smith merchant should win you over to this movie's high linguistic wit.
Fresh: True Grit is as good as one of their minor works gets.
Fresh: Steinfeld takes everything in her stride and makes every scene her own, an achievement made all the more remarkable given she is on screen for virtually the entire picture.
Fresh: Delivers a perfectly fine, character-driven revenge yarn before unaccountably falling into a heap in its final act.

Another Coen classic.
Few directors have the ability to make every film they make a classic. The 'two-headed' director, aka the Coen brothers, are 'one' of them. Every movie they've made from "Fargo" to "A Serious Man" are extroidinary, flawless, and most importantly, thought-provoking. Now, we have yet another one to cherish.
The acting is amazing beyond belief! Jeff Bridges was cool and hilarious, while Hailee Stienfeld suprises everyone and becomes the years best break-out star. Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Barry Pepper all do great as well, but Bridges alone makes the film worth seeing.
The story has no real twists or turns, but it remains engaging and gives an epic feeling near the end.
For those of you who expect this to be an action-packed western, you may feel a bit disapointed. There's only two brief action scenes, and they don't show till the last half. However, the acting and story are too engaging to make one really care. But, when the action comes, you will not be disapointed.
Joel and Ethan Coen have proved yet again that film-making is what they were born for. "True Grit" is one of the years best films, and the western for people who don't like westerns. Two Thumbs Up!!!
"Them boys, they'll be thinking about the wrath that's about to set down on 'em." - Jeff Bridges as 'Rooster' Cogburn
Great Movie! But...
This was a brutal yet great movie that I believe many people should see. Hailee Steinfeld deserves an Oscar win for her potrayel in this movie. But for iTunes, change the rating for True Grit. It was PG-13, not R. Please change that soon!
The Coens are back and better than ever.
True Grit is Joel and Ethan's best film since No Country For Old Men, that's the bottom line. In my opinon, True Grit is the best western in years. If you are a big fan of the origanal John Wayne classic, you might not like this new version; it's definitely different in a lot of ways.
The acting was memorable, from Bridges, Damon, Steinfeld, Brolin and Pepper. The directing was top notch and the screenplay was witty.
The Coens always work hard on their scripts, and it shows in the film. This is just a fine peace of work.
I am glad True Grit is going to the Oscers; it deserves every award it was nominated for. Buy this movie or if you are not sure about it, at least rent it.
Five stars.
