Plot Summary

Yuen Woo Ping (The Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill Volumes I and II, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero) brings you True Legend, a heart pounding epic about the timeless battle between good and evil. Su Can’s (Vincent Zhao) respectable life is obliterated when his vengeful brother, Yuan (Andy On), returns from war armed with the deadly Five Venom Fists. Weakened but not destroyed, Su Can learns a never-before-seen form of martial arts: the Drunken Fist. Armed with this new power, he returns home to honor his family through retribution by taking on his brother in a battle to become the ultimate warrior. Packed with distinct fighting styles—including MMA, knife combat and sweeping aerial stunts— and starring martial arts legends Michelle Yeoh, David Carradine and Jay Chou, True Legend has Phillip French of The Observer raving, “It opens with one of the best action sequences I've ever seen.”

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The fights in "True Legend" become pretty routine. And beyond some lovely mountain scenery and a tiny cameo by a radiant Michelle Yeoh, there isn't much else to look at. – Mike Hale, New York Times, May 12, 2011

Fresh: Pic's many satisfyingly kinetic action sequences and strong thesping (particularly by femme lead Zhou Xun) outweigh its uneven scripting and occasional ill-advised forays into CGI. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, May 11, 2011

Fresh: A hodgepodge of styles, "True Legend" works best as a freewheeling showcase for Yuen's dazzling fight sequences above any sort of cogent storytelling. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, May 12, 2011

Fresh: In countless over-the-top set pieces, Yuen delivers striking combat clarity without sacrificing the visceral editing and crazy digital effects of modern bloodbaths. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, May 11, 2011

Epic

I have seen hundreds of kung fu movies and I must say this is the best I have seen so far. Great story, effects, action, everything.

Wow this is awesome

Awesome fight sequences and special effects. The storyline is pretty decent too. A must-see for all action/martial-arts fan!

An awesome movie.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a martial arts movie fan. I watched the trailer first, which shows people dancing around in the air. I thought it might be like Crouching Tiger//Hidden Dragon, but in reality, those sequences are in the head of the lead character as he fights to overcome his own shortcomings and master martial arts. There is wire work throughout, but not of the walking-on-air variety. It's a great story with lots of awesome fight sequences. While I still prefer the classic martial arts movie without wire help, I was able to easily forgive it in this movie, because it's such a good story and the characters just draw you in. It's action-packed, heart-felt and triumphant by the end. I loved it.
