Plot Summary

"What happened to you last night?" "Umm...I don’t know." "Where did you go? We waited for you for a while?" "I don't know...I don’t really want to talk about it." "Where did you end up?" "F***! I said I didn't want to talk about it.... My head hurts. I'm gonna go lay down. I'll call you tomorrow." In December of 2008, Kanye West sent Spike Jonze his song See You In My Nightmares from 808s and Heartbreaks. They’d been talking for quite awhile about working on a project together, and it was finally a good time for both of them. Spike wrote a story for the song, working off of the raw feeling of 808s and Heartbreak. He suggested they do it as a short film, which would free them up creatively, and Kanye agreed. Spike, knowing Kanye’s level of commitment, cast him as the lead character – a pathetic, sad drunk in a club. Spike wanted to get a raw, shameless performance, and Kanye went for it, wholeheartedly. They filmed it over the course of two days at a club in West Hollywood, with a very low budget and a skeleton crew. It became an experimental short film for them. Spike says, “Our idea was just to see if we could make a short film, pay for it ourselves, put it on iTunes, and see what happens.”

Spike Jonze and Kanye West

I think it's obvious why people can dislike this short, two words--Kanye West. Well, I have to admit, Kanye did pretty well in this short-film directed by Spike Jonze ("Where The Wild Things Are", "Being John Malkovich", and "Adaptation"). The film alludes towards Kanye's real-life and probably depicts situations he has actually been in, and it's terrifying to watch as he experiences the loneliness and addiction. The film's message is true and great, with Spike Jonze's unique filmmaking techniques and Kanye's acting (he plays himself and relates to the situation because he's been in that situation), this film is beautiful and shows a new-side to the much-hated Kanye West. I believe this may be the way Kanye shows the world that he is truly sorry for the terrible thing he did to Taylor Swift and that he is truly trying to change because he has realized he has a problem.

Spike Jonze and Kanye West?

Who'da thought that such an odd couple could create such a masterpiece? Spike Jonze's hyperrealist aesthetic lends itself beautifully to the story of an egocentric, drunken rapper--played by an egocentric, drunken rapper. This video shows that Kanye is ready to excorcize his demons (although his rant at the VMA's occurred after the filming of the video...). Regardless, anything Jonze touches is gold, and this is no exception.

Look, it's an award that has a moon man for goodness sake!!! Granted she's america's sweetheart but if he would have gone up and grabbed the mic from Lil Kim nobody would have made 1/3 of the deal they made for Taylor. I understand what he did was wrong but of all the things (calling out bush during a fund raiser)he has done over the years people decide because she looks like a 12yr old with too much make up we all of a sudden HATE Kanye!! All I can say is he is an awesome rapper he makes bad decisions but oh well...
