Plot Summary
Young Australian journalist Mel Gibson takes his first assignment in Indonesia during the 1965 coup. As the violence escalates, he has an intense affair with British journalist Sigourney Weaver. Linda Hunt ("Kindergarten Cop," "Pocohantas") won a well-deserved Oscar as Gibson's male photographer friend and jealous rival. A powerfully evocative political thriller with fascinating scenes of Asian culture. Academy Award-winner Gibson ("Lethal Weapon," "Braveheart," "Ransom"), Oscar and Golden Globe-nominee Weaver ("Alien ," "Ghostbusters," "Copycat"), and Hunt are joined by Michael Murphy ("Batman Returns," TV's "Dead Ahead: The Exxon Valdez Disaster"). Oscar-nominee Peter Weir ("Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Dead Poets Society") wrote and directed.

This movie has many layers: the basic story is about a young Australian journalist , Guy Hamilton, who is sent to 1956 Indonesia on his first assignment as a foreign correspondent. Left with no contacts, he is in danger of failing. Aided by a freelance photographer, Billy Kwan, a dwarf, he gets a rare interview with the Communist opposition leader--and becomes a rising star. A deeper layer involves the choices he must make between his burgeoning career and the British woman he begins to love. All this during the riots and military rule of Sukarno. Guy allows ego and ambition threaten to ruin all his relationships, and even to put himself in the line of death. Underneath everything runs the theme of love: of a woman, of career, and Billy's love for the poor and downtrod, whom he mistakingly thinks Sukarno is will help. Like all of Weir's films, this one deftly deals with the clash of cultures on many levels. Fantastic acting by Linda Hunt, complex characters, gorgeous haunting music by Maurice Jarre, beautiful scenery, history, drama and romance, and a theme that our lives should be used to help others. My favorite movie of all time.
