This Song's Gonna Be Drivin' You Wild

This is the third single off of Common's album, Finding Forever. The first two singles, The People and The Game, put the emphasis on Common's fantastic lyrical ability, and as a result, were not as appealing to the mainstream crowd. Drivin' Me Wild has everything you could ever want in a song executed to perfection. There is a wonderful beat produced by Kanye West. Then, there is an outstanding chorus by Lily Allen. This chorus is what will attract most of the mainstream crowd. However, do not let the chorus underscore Common's excellent lyricism. Common tells two stories on this song. The first story is of a woman obsessed with her appearance and who tries really hard to get recognized. She eventually, marries a ballplayer and becomes a housewife. Key lines in this verse include, "She was the type to watch Oprah and The Today Show, be on the tredmill kinda like O.K. Go", and "Doing all she can for her man and the baby, drivin herself crazy like the astronaut lady". The second verse is about a man obsessed with the latest trends and impressing people. Key lines include "Wanted to be Mike, but he was never live in sports, since golf was in, he was on the driving course, to live the rap life was what he was striving for", "Spending cash at the bar to get credit, drinking Sean Johns just because Big said it, he had a fetish for shoes athletic, pathetic on his MySpace page half-naked", and "It's a shame what they do for fame and to be respected, Joe you would've got it if you never would've stressed it". In the third verse Common puts a wonderful perspective on people who look to impress others because of their low self-esteem. "Wishing for the diamond cuffs, in search of a ring, when love is not a mystery, it's everything".

Another great single from Finding Forever!

After The Game and The People, i figured Common couldn't do any better, but after seeing this and buying the album, i was so wrong. This is another upbeat and good song from Common and the collabo with Lily Allen is unique and good. A good buy, song and/or video.

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Common (originally Common Sense) was a highly influential figure in rap's underground during the '90s, keeping the sophisticated lyrical technique and flowing syncopations of jazz-rap alive in an era when commercial gangsta rap was threatening to obliterate everything in its path. His literate, intelligent, nimbly performed rhymes and political consciousness certainly didn't fit the fashions of the moment, but he was able to win a devoted cult audience. By the late '90s, a substantial underground...
