never thought i'd see a shriekback video. sweet!

Priests, cannibals, and all the other widdly bits we know and love

There are a handful of Shriekback videos floating around out there, but this one is—by far— the best. Not only does it have a wonderful, lo-tech vibe to lend it an air of honest authenticity rarely seen in today's million dollar mega-videos, it is notable for doing something no sane person has any right to expect: it captures the writhing essence of a Shriekback song in all of its weird, watery, cyclopean, dystopian glory. Essentially, we find Barry Andrews delivering his lyric via the most deliciously sublime facial contortions, while the rest of the band assume the role of a toga wearing, occasionally masked Greek chorus, belting out the much-loved "hooligan refrain" in a classical posture of rhetorical address. All in all, a wonderfully evocative little mini-movie that does everything you would expect an end-times anthem like Nemesis to do.

Shriekback is not an easy band to classify. They borrowed heavily from funk but had a very different agenda; their music was more suited for contemplation than for parties. They combined synthesizers and drum machines with throbbing bass lines and unorthodox vocals to evoke a primordial world where the line between human and animal was blurred. The title of their fourth album, Big Night Music, might be the most succinct summation of their work: Shriekback's music was always an appropriate soundtrack...
