Joel and Benji Madden — the trouble-making identical twins behind Good Charlotte — were so inspired by Beastie Boys' Ill Communication tour they just had to form a band soon after the show. Thanks to a serious knack for hooks and hummable melodies, the newly minted group soon turned into a major Top 40 presence, from the ecstatic and elastic pop-punk beginnings of "Little Things," "The Anthem," and "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" to more recent brushes with disco beats and lip-loosening rhymes ("I Just Wanna Live"), sugar rush synths, and shimmering vocals ("I Don't Wanna Be In Love"), and pure, unadulterated honey-dipped harmonies ("The River," which features the frontman and lead guitarist of Avenged Sevenfold).

Our Next Steps strikes a balance between Good Charlotte's oldest and newest tunes, with the added bonus of three non-album tracks that expand the band's story even further.

The idea of hearing Good Charlotte unplugged might seem strange at first, but the fact is their songs are sturdier than a professional bodybuilder when they're stripped down to nothing but gently strummed strings and barebones vocals. Case in point: the immediate flick-your-lighters-in-the-air bliss that comes with acoustic versions of "We Believe," "Emotionless," and "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous." As for gloomy days that demand something gnarly and loud, we've got that covered, from the galloping verses of "Festival Song" and "The Motivation Proclamation" to the grinding, bullet-train guitars of "Walk Away (Maybe)" and "Secrets."

The overwhelming support of a single, solitary Philadelphia station got Good Charlotte off to a rousing start in 2000, when the brain-burrowing efforts of "Little Things" won Y100's Cage Match competition 15 nights in a row. All before it became the band's first official single, too, sparking nearly a decade of chart-climbing crossover albums. Four of which are thoroughly examined in our Good Charlotte Essentials — starting with the group's self-titled debut, a simple but satisfying take on snot-nosed pop in the tradition of blink-182 and Green Day. Like both of those bands, Good Charlotte has grown considerably with time: "Emotionless" is an early attempt at tastefully orchestrated balladry, "Girls & Boys" borders on bubblegum pop, "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" hits high notes in the same breath as its robotic lead vocals, and "Victims of Love" dips into the dance-rock pool like a gutter-punk-schooled version of the Killers.
