Truly Before Her Time

It's a shame that there are no user reviews of Laura Nyro, but she was truly ahead of her time. Her earliest songs date from the mid to late 60s, but sound like hits from only half a decade later. And some like "Billy's Blue" sound like they should be from today's neo Soul scene.

I confess I am most familiar with her earlier works since my mother played Laura Nyro a lot. I do recommend listening to her version of "Stoney End", "Wedding Bell Blues" and "And When I Die", because she brings such a charming air of sass and irony to the songs. But her non-hits are just as good. A personal favorite of mine is "Good Bye Joe" a bittersweet up tempo song in which she says good-bye to an old love as he's about to marry someone else.

Her later songs seem to move towards more traditional jazz and blues - but again this was way before Diana Krall and Norah Jones. The pop world was probably not quite ready yet for what Nyro had to offer.

One of a kind to be enjoyed for the Ages

yes indeed Laura was way ahead of her time. she had an air of mystery about her. i don't know if it's true or not but a friend once told me that you never knew what you were gonna get when attending one of her concerts in person. the sheer variety of the musical groups and singers that have covered her repertoire of songs speaks to her versatility as a songwriter. her moods range from light and humorous to deep, often sad soul-searching diatribes that have the ability to leave the listener emotionally drained yet mesmerized by her insight into the human condition.
such a pity that she passed away from ovarian cancer at the age of 49. at least we have her marvelous recordings to cherish now and forever.
It often applies that in order to really understand a particular song completely you must hear the writer's version in comparison to the covered versions, if that is an option. as fine as a song like "wedding bell blues" is by the 5th dimension, Laura's take is a rapturing one-of-a kind renditon along the lines of an eva cassidy tour-de-force - another extremely talented singer/songwriter prematurely taken from us due to an all too common cancer diagnosis.

Finally Receiving Long Overdue Recognition

Finally after so many years of rejecting one the brightest talents to come out of American music in the early 60s, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is admitting Laura Nyro. Her early work was magic, the lyrics, the seemless intergration of soul, rock, blues, and even -doo wop, was just amazing, She is truely a talent for the ages and now, unfortunatley, she sings with the Angels. Rest In Peace Laura, you a truely missed angel.
