- The Basics
For the first five years of her career, hits surged from Laura Nyro like steam from a teakettle, then she walked away, cutting all ties with the music business for half a decade. If the basics of her career sound something like the Fifth Dimension songbook, it's because three of these tunes — "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Wedding Bell Blues," and "Save the Country" — were all hits for that group. Barbra Streisand's cover of "Stoney End" hit the Top 10, as did Three Dog Night's version of "Eli's Comin'" and Blood Sweat & Tears' take on "And When I Die."

As Laura completed her four-year stint with Columbia prior to leaving the record business "for good" (even though it turned out to be only five years), she left with Gonna Take a Miracle, an uncharacteristic album of covers, showing that she was as gifted at interpreting hits as she was at writing them. Legendary soul producers Gamble & Huff were at the controls, and Nyro teamed with LaBelle for some exquisite versions of soul classics, like "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "Jimmy Mack."

They say the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and Laura Nyro passed away at the age of 49, a victim, like her mother, of ovarian cancer. The live recording of "Angel in the Dark" gave a hint as to the direction parts of her last studio album would take, back to an intimacy reminiscent of New York Tendaberry, recorded half-a-lifetime before. But her artistic influence is her greatest legacy, and you can hear in "The Confession" and "Map to the Treasure" seeds being planted for the likes of Rickie Lee Jones and Jane Siberry to harvest years later.

Part Greta Garbo, part Mahalia Jackson, Laura Nyro is one of the great mysteries of pop music. When the spirit moved her, she could belt out a full-throated gospel plea that the angel Gabriel could hear from his perch on high, yet she retired for the first time at the age of 24 (fortunately, she rescinded her departure half-a-decade later). Sophisticated beyond her years, at the age of 19 she penned three Top 10 hits on her first album — none of them hits for herself. Her combination of jazz, pop, gospel, soul, and rock, along with complex and insightful lyrics, made her a critical favorite, but widespread success as a performer remained the one brass ring she couldn't capture.

Truly Before Her Time
It's a shame that there are no user reviews of Laura Nyro, but she was truly ahead of her time. Her earliest songs date from the mid to late 60s, but sound like hits from only half a decade later. And some like "Billy's Blue" sound like they should be from today's neo Soul scene.
I confess I am most familiar with her earlier works since my mother played Laura Nyro a lot. I do recommend listening to her version of "Stoney End", "Wedding Bell Blues" and "And When I Die", because she brings such a charming air of sass and irony to the songs. But her non-hits are just as good. A personal favorite of mine is "Good Bye Joe" a bittersweet up tempo song in which she says good-bye to an old love as he's about to marry someone else.
Her later songs seem to move towards more traditional jazz and blues - but again this was way before Diana Krall and Norah Jones. The pop world was probably not quite ready yet for what Nyro had to offer.
One of a kind to be enjoyed for the Ages
yes indeed Laura was way ahead of her time. she had an air of mystery about her. i don't know if it's true or not but a friend once told me that you never knew what you were gonna get when attending one of her concerts in person. the sheer variety of the musical groups and singers that have covered her repertoire of songs speaks to her versatility as a songwriter. her moods range from light and humorous to deep, often sad soul-searching diatribes that have the ability to leave the listener emotionally drained yet mesmerized by her insight into the human condition.
such a pity that she passed away from ovarian cancer at the age of 49. at least we have her marvelous recordings to cherish now and forever.
It often applies that in order to really understand a particular song completely you must hear the writer's version in comparison to the covered versions, if that is an option. as fine as a song like "wedding bell blues" is by the 5th dimension, Laura's take is a rapturing one-of-a kind renditon along the lines of an eva cassidy tour-de-force - another extremely talented singer/songwriter prematurely taken from us due to an all too common cancer diagnosis.
Finally Receiving Long Overdue Recognition
Finally after so many years of rejecting one the brightest talents to come out of American music in the early 60s, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is admitting Laura Nyro. Her early work was magic, the lyrics, the seemless intergration of soul, rock, blues, and even -doo wop, was just amazing, She is truely a talent for the ages and now, unfortunatley, she sings with the Angels. Rest In Peace Laura, you a truely missed angel.
