While Diplo's Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape helped M.I.A. storm the underground scene in late 2004, many of her early songs started as solo affairs — simple drum-machine sequences like the heat-seeking synths of "Galang" and the post-apocalyptic basslines of "Fire, Fire." Aside from the knob-twiddling touches of some A-list collaborators (not just Diplo, but club-ready crate diggers, like Richard X and Switch), her songs in the years since haven't stopped sounding like total M.I.A. productions, either, from the bold, Bollywood-like beats of "Boyz" to the horn-blasting baile funk breaks of "Bucky Done Gun." It might not make sense on paper — Jay-Z spitting verses on a couple of speaker-clobbering M.I.A. cuts — but there's no denying the pair's pass-the-mic skills on alternate versions of "XXXO" and "Boyz." On another tip entirely are the riot-starting Suicide riffs of "Born Free," the disco ball-doused melodies of "Jimmy," and the rubber-soled dancehall grooves that drive "Sound of Siren." Between those three and the rest of this set, you'll quickly learn that the only thing you can expect from Sri Lankan singer/songwriter/producer are swift genre shifts and massive hooks.

No matter how you look at it, M.I.A. must get up some mornings and wonder how she got here; how she went from being a successful art student — she graduated from London's leading design school and helped with the layout of Elastica's second album — to having a Top 10 hit that samples the Clash, gun shots, and the ka-ching of a cash register ("Paper Planes"). The answer's in her albums, which don't subscribe to any particular sound beyond M.I.A.'s own twisted idea of what it means to be a pop star. That usually ends up being a musical version of the collage-heavy prints and eye-gouging colors on her album sleeves, whether it's something as noisy and savage as "Steppin Up" or as basic but banging as "10 Dollar," "Space," and "Bamboo Banga."
