- The Basics
As you’re about to hear in our catalog-skimming Essentials set, Massive Attack didn’t just stumble upon a new sound when they dropped their debut single — the dread-wracked downtempo of “Daydreaming,” featuring the slick, scrappy rhymes of their old friend Tricky. Thanks to bar-raising moments like the sweeping neo-soul melodies of “Unfinished Sympathy” and the rain-slicked soundscapes of “Safe from Harm,” the Bristol-bred group announced the worldwide arrival of trip-hop itself. And they haven’t stopped reinventing their sound since then — from the post-apocalyptic power-balladry of “Angel” to the spare handclaps and creeping keys of “Paradise Circus.”
Our Next Steps is just as restless, bouncing between fan favorites and a couple of standout selections from the film score Massive Attack tackled in 2004.$19.35 The Basics

Considering how cinematic Massive Attack sounds on a normal day, it’s no wonder why they landed the score of the fist-flailing Jet Li film Danny the Dog. They nailed every last scene, too, from the chunky breaks and heat-seeking synths of “I Am Home” to the ravaged riffs and pedal-pounding effects of “One Thought At a Time.” As for Massive Attack’s more familiar full-lengths, they include the breathalyzer-chased beats of “Heat Miser,” the heaven-sent Sinéad O’Connor hooks of “A Prayer for England,” and the radar-grazing blips and beeps of “Future Proof.” Not to mention the spacey Mad Professor dub-plates spread across No Protection.

Ask any critic or song-quoting record collector: Massive Attack’s Blue Lines platter changed everything about electronic music in the early ’90s, hammering home the hazy trip-hop template of eerie soul singers, speaker-rattling dub, bloodletting R&B, and enough hip-hop influences to remind us of the group’s sound-system beginnings in the Wild Bunch. Several decades and universally acclaimed albums later, Massive Attack are still as widescreen as sample-driven music gets, whether that means celebrating the classic vapor-trail vocals of Horace Andy (“Angel,” “Girl I Love You,” “Hymn of the Big Wheel”); sampling the KLF and spotlighting the slow-burn vocals of Tricky (“Karmacoma”); or tossing dust-caked drums (“Black Milk”) and haunted harpsichords (“Teardrop”) at a Cocteau Twin. Come to think of it, this entire mood-manipulating set should come with a free tub of popcorn — it's that big-screen-ready.

Extraneous track
"Baby Boy" (#30 on this set) isn't by Massive Attack. It's by Thea - your own listing even says so.
Superpredators
iTunes, please put Superpredators in here. It's from the opening titles in 'The Jackal.' Killer beat.
