When did "Hippie" become a derogatory term for music?

Speaking as someone who enjoyed the first wave of "Hippie" music, I can see exactly how all of these songs fall under this descriptive umbrella. I'm not an articulate critic but the thought that popped into my head so often when I was discovering these artists individually was, "I like it because it's sort of like hippie music!" That label brings to my mind thoughtful, interesting, well played, fun and free-spirited music - No bad connotation at all. I've enjoyed finding this "New Hippie" compilation recommended along with most of the groups that I already loved and take it as an affirmation that I'm not the only one that has noticed this!

Title is stupid, music is excellent.

The music itself is absolutely fantastic, but this is a garbage label from iTunes. The term should really be New Folk or Folk Revival. Anyways, iTunes ignorance aside, the collection is pretty damn decent. If you like pared-down acoustics and intimate vocals, this is a veritable gold mine.

Worst label yet.

While this is a list of some of the greatest artists of today, new hippie may be the absolute worst label for music I have yet seen.
Apparently if an artist has a christ-like beard or any form of psychedelia/experimentation then they are instantly labeled as "new hippie".
While these are all fantastic artist and the artists of the 60's were marvelous as well, it's stupid to assume that this is all simply a new breed of hippie.
This list is also made up of artists from all different soundscapes, so if you're looking for one particular genre then don't expect to find it here.
Overall, it's simply a poor label and not really representative of the majority of these artists as Animal Collective, perhaps the most overtly psychedelic of the group is influenced much more by Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys, who came prior to the hippies.
Deerhunter labeled themselves "ambient punk", something that doesn't really conjure up images of 60's rock music.
The occasional artist does make sense though, such as Fleet Foxes, but overall it's few and far between.
In the end, it's 0 stars for the label/list and 1,000 stars for the artists on the list.
