ROAD... trip... ?

Road trips are the reason I love music as much as I do. When I was twelve years old, I went on a road trip with my dear father and listened to the entire Beatles catalogue, introducing me to the world of music on the spot. A second road trip shortly afterwards, across country with my family, introduced me to Pink Floyd (while riding through the deserts of Nevada), Michelle Shocked (the Great Plains), the Cars (Michigan), and god knows how many other amazing groups and artists. My life was shaped by these experiences.

And here we go! So you're getting ready to go on a road trip, look at iTunes' choices for exactly the right road trip, and hey presto! A playlist of all the latest big hits, probably changing with the tide of the top 40--Shakira one day, Katy Perry the next. Not to mention the fact they're only good for a road trip if by "road trip" you mean taking off with some bimbos in a convertible and speeding down the interstate with a six-pack and no thoughts of the future. There's something timeless about the experience of a great road trip, a pastime people all over the world have enjoyed since the advent of the automobile however many decades ago. This playlist? It'll be swallowed by the zeitgeist in a few months. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Do you really want to listen to this on a road trip?

Planning a road trip is difficult, as is picking the playlist to commemorate it. It literally makes or breaks the Trip. So the fact that this “Road Trip Playlist” is made up of songs I can hear every five minutes on a Top 40’s radio station is rather ridiculous. Throw a little bit of culture in there for crying out loud…and I am not talking about the maybe four or five songs that that came out before the year 2007. Where is the classics- Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, CCR, Bad Company, Boston…music with soul! This generation is being lied to if this playlist is considered “good.” Thank you very much iTunes.

This... is disgusting.

The playlist looked nice, until I found some Ke$ha and BEP in the mix. Road Trip songs have to do with adventure, electric fun, slow-dance romanticism, and occasional sing-along tunes for the kids. I mean, there are A LOT of wrong songs here, even in the Basics... just so wrong.
