First as the frontman for White Zombie (disbanded 1998), then as a solo artist, Rob Zombie has made it his mission to pulverize rock 'n' roll expectations with a dirty cleaver, reassembling various elements of heavy, industrial, and groove metal into one fearsome sonic monster, electrifying the beast with shots of hard rock, turntablism, and punk, while lyrically cruising a surreal backwoods landscape of psychos and strippers in a hell-bound muscle car. We continue our journey into Rob Zombie's sonic grindhouse with tracks that reflect his twin obsessions: cinema and the devil's music. For "The Great American Nightmare" — included on the soundtrack to Private Parts (1997) — he partners up with the devil's very own shock jock, Howard Stern (whose singing voice is, thankfully, mangled by cod-demonic distortion); and on "The Devil's Rejects," he name-checks his own 2005 cult movie, adding a thick sludge of bone-crunching monster rock. Throw in a handful of highlights from 2010's Hellbilly Deluxe 2, including the searing party-stomper "What?," and the carnage is complete.

Of all Zombie collaborators, one of the least likely is Lionel Richie, who provides superstar vocal assistance on "Brick House 2003," the Commodores cover included on the soundtrack to House of 1000 Corpses. Informed by the details and excesses of exploitation/splatter cinema, and possessed by restless creative demons, Rob Zombie has forged a uniquely American brand of searing, blood-caked, road-rashed rock 'n' roll, starting out as the lead singer of White Zombie, then departing on a solo mission from which he's never been recalled. The obsessions that surfaced on White Zombie cuts like "Black Sunshine" — which features a spoken-word cameo by Iggy Pop, and culls audio samples from Faster, Pussycat!
