- The Basics
Sleek, sly, and sophisticated, Steely Dan made '70s radio gleam with their high-gloss, smart-ass style of jazz-rock. The cast of supporting players shifted over the years, but Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's songs remained the focus. These elegantly subversive masterminds have taken their group into the 21st century with new twists on their tastefully biting sound. These cuts are a Dan-dy introduction to the group's fine-polished sound.

Steely Dan achieved the remarkable feat of becoming a multi-format radio favorite without compromising their jazzy sophistication and ironic attitude. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen laced their records with stinging lyric wit and highbrow arrangements, while still managing to please millions. Considering that the group took its name from a sex toy mentioned in a William S. Burroughs novel, it's not surprising that Steely Dan has a love for cryptic references and esoteric musical touches. Becker and Fagen's works feature more than a few exotic masterpieces beyond the pale of conventional radio playlists. Pleasure yourself with these tracks from the more obscure corners of the Steely Dan catalog.

The Steely Dan Experience by Buzbe Tarver
Being a huge fan, I can tell you this. The 'battle apple' of NYC starts out smooth and polished without the thought of being brandished as a weapon. From their humble rock aestetics to the unpretentious streetwise jazz sound, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker somehow pull out the best straws when drawing for their stance in music history. Arming themselves with the onslaught on rhythm charts, the coy play on words lyrical content of a man of mystery and flavour and incorporating the best cream of the crop studio sesson musicians on the planet, they embark the listener on a rollercoaster ride of edgy rock sensibilities, comical alternative studio combo foreplay and big orchestrated jazz ensembles that ebbed and flowed thoughtout the turbulent times of each decade passed with a little bit of R+B and Funk thrown in for good measure! "They changed, they grew and everybody knew..." The constants? Donald's keyboards leading the charge on "My Old School" to the well crafted "Aja" with Walter playing bass or guitar being the foil to Donald's prowess. "Gaucho", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Black Cow", "Here At The Western World" and "Black Friday" are seperate heads to the Hydra called Steely Dan that tell stories of private feelings and imaginary characters far beyond any in many musical genres. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Micheal McDonald (Doobie Brothers) and Jeff Pocaro (Toto) as well as a plethera of others answered the call. Tom Scott, Randy and Micheal Brecker, Dean Parks, Wayne Shorter, Bernie Purdie, Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter, Paulinho De Costa, Victor Feldman, Larry Carlton, are but a few of the many musicians who contributed and performed live. Believe it or not, the name of the duo came from the book "The Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs... it was a name of a strap on dildo dubbed by Yokohama (Steely Dan III). They soon will celebrate 40 years of making music which will go down as the longest collaboration of a non-typical band format in the history of music!
The Basics - Steely Dan
Absolutely an amazing display of musical talent. Here we have sounds coming from the heart. The love of making music can be heard in each instrument being played - so a thank you to those mixing and producing. Each musician has gone the extra mile in each of these well crafted arrangements. Love the chord changes and Fagen and Becker obviously bring their A game to each session. Always a delight to listen and very lucky to have seen these two put together great shows.
It does not get any better
There is no other sound like SD in the music world. It is very hard to really describe the sound..it is just so unique.
