  • Sting's Notes
    • 2. "Hideaway" by Eric Clapton, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers: "This was my guitar album — I learned every song note for note. Eric (Clapton) was taking and reworking ideas from people like Freddie King. When I played guitar with the Blue Turtles band I could work through clichés, but I'm no blues guitarist."
    • 3. "Rope Ladder to the Moon" by Jack Bruce: "I was actually more keen on Jack's work after he left Cream, especially this superb record. Jack had a certain formalism that attracted me — he wasn't just a plodder. Here was a bass player who sang — which is impossible — and had a jazz sensibility. I finally had a musical role model to look up to."
    • 5. "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" by Return to Forever: "Basically an exercise in demi-semiquavers we used to do in my old band Last Exit. I remember doing a gig with a big band and we supported Return to Forever. I had never seen anything like it."
    • 7. "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap: "'Ow much more black could it be? None more black."
    • 9. "Paper Sun" by Traffic: "I loved the band Traffic for their way of creating a musical universe without these boundaries, because whether it's country, pop, gospel, heavy metal or classical music, it's all a single language, a code."
    • 10. "Tempted" by Squeeze: "One of my favourite songs that I never wrote was 'Tempted' and I did actually cover it. It's a great song, and Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook are great songwriters, Squeeze was always a great band, and it was nice to cover it."

Insightful Notes. Inspired playlist.

Reading the notes to this playlist reminds me how much I enjoy reading Sting. I used to look eagerly to the liner notes with the release of every new album for his insights, notes, or comments on the music and lyrics - especially on his earlier solo albums. This is a great list of music. I was happy to see Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad" on this playlist. I love the album. I know Springsteen won a Grammy for it, but I always felt like I was the only person listening to that album. Traffic is another great choice. The comments on Kurt Cobain reminded me of the first time I heard Nirvana. I saw Sting cover "Tempted" and love his version which is respectful to the original material. If you are reading this, Sting, thanks for the playlist. I became an English Professor in part because of you - your own past and the intelligence of your music and words certainly provided the romantic inspiration. Soul Cages (the entire album) still moves me deeply. I had a few beers with Andy Summers after a show one evening, but would very much like to meet you one day.
