- The Basics
Is this guy nuts? Or is he simply indie rock's greatest comedian since Stephen Malkmus? How about neither? At the end of the day, Sufjan Stevens is a genuine, impossible to pin down genius. How can we tell? Try the following 15 tracks, which unfold like the flash-frozen frames of an off-Broadway play featuring Technicolor® opening numbers ("Chicago"), contemplative cutaways ("The Avalanche," "Sister"), and moments of, well, sheer madness ("Enjoy Your Rabbit").

It's no surprise that Sufjan Stevens was chosen to crack "What Goes On" like a coconut, letting the Beatles classic spill into a vat of brown acid. Michigan's pride and joy — at least in college rock circles — has plowed over singer-songwriter clichés since the four-tracked early days of A Sun Came, peppering his compositions with top-heavy beats ("Year of the Ox"), polished brass sections ("Say Yes! To M!ch!igan!"), and vocals that ripple like a pebble-stabbed pond ("Jason").

Like a hip history professor stuck in the body of a born singer-songwriter, Sufjan Stevens has stunned critics and indie rock connoisseurs since 2000 with his bruised but beautiful solo albums. And then there's his grossly ambitious 50-states project, which is exactly what it sounds like — an album for every star in the American flag, painted in brush strokes so broad they could fill an entire museum wing. On Michigan alone, Stevens plays more than 20 instruments, including a banjo, oboe, and sleigh bells, allowing his precious, little compositions to bloom like a greenhouse at the height of spring.

Missing Predatory Wasp
I can't believe that anyone would make a Sufjan compilation and leave out "Predatory Wasp of the Palisades." That is arguably his best song. Also, his first album is his weakest. I wouldn't have included anything from it.
But there are some really good choices in this mix. It's just extremely lacking.
Not very essential
The only reason I gave this four stars is because it's hard to go that wrong if you buy any collection of Sufjan Stevens material...so it's hard to give it a bad rating. But as far as an "essential" collection I would have to disagree...at least the basics version. John Wayne Gacy Jr - one of my favorites is not on the basics. And songs like Vito's Ordination Song, A Good Man Is Hard To Find, They Are Night Zombies!! (etc.) are nowhere to be found on this collection (along with others). That being said Sufjan Stevens is great regardless and the positives of this essential collection is that you get a pretty good variety of his music. So if you are interested in his music I would say you should give it a shot definitely it's wonderful but personally I would start with the albums Illinois and/or Michigan as opposed to this collection. (It's worth noting that the basics collection is what I started with as well but now I wish I would have started with the albums I mentioned....you don't save any money with this collection...another reason to get the albums instead)
Whatever you decide this is great music however it's divided.
Buy the Albums in their Entirety.
Sufjan Stevens is an amazing artist, one of the best out there today. But his musical genius can only be appreciated in its fullest by listen to each of his albums, start to finish. Each album is its own piece of art: each song flowing gloriously into the next, both musically and thematically. Listening to selections of his are ok, but if you really want to truly hear Sufjan's artistic voice, buy the whole album. It's so worth it.
