- The Basics
True to their tire-town roots in Akron, Ohio, the Black Keys didn’t conquer the charts overnight. They clawed their way to the top — earning a bigger following with every album, starting with the thicker-than-gumbo grooves of “When the Lights Go Out,” a distortion-drenched cover of “Have Love Will Travel,” and the joyride riffs of “10 A.M. Automatic.” And then there’s the duo’s more recent albums, from the bruised hooks of Brothers to the Danger Mouse duets of Attack & Release — a breakthrough collection that tosses swampy breaks (“Strange Times”) and mind-warping effects (“I Got Mine”) into the mix. The Black Keys’ hip-hop influence also pops up in our Next Steps, from subtle production touches to the band’s BlakRoc project.

When Howlin’ Wolf is one of your heroes and you’ve got a voice that was born to belt the blues, you’ve got only one option. Well, three options if you’re Dan Auerbach, the most obvious being the frontman position in the Black Keys, a role he’s relished since the early ’00s (see: the slow-burning “Psychotic Girl” and such asphalt-scarring anthems as “Set You Free” and “Girl Is On My Mind”). But then there’s Auerbach’s other outlets, including his solo run (the fireside folk of “Trouble Weighs a Ton,” the cruise-control chords of “Heartbroken, In Disrepair”) and the Black Keys’ BlakRoc alias — a twilight-zone take on rap-rock that’s bursting with Motown-schooled soul.

Sometimes all you need to make a great rock record are rail-jumping riffs, a steam-powered rhythm section, and a born-to-be-wild attitude — the kind you can’t fake, the kind that reeks of gasoline and pure grit. Just ask the Black Keys, Akron’s answer to the White Stripes and the sort of scratchy, dusty blues records that line your grandfather’s living room floor. Or as frontman Dan Auerbach once put it, “the groove was king” when the Black Keys first started cranking out four-track recordings in the basement of drummer Patrick Carney. And that’s been the rule ever since, from the blistering, keep-it-simple cuts of The Big Come Up and Thickfreakness to the experimental flourishes of Brothers and Attack & Release, which sound not unlike RZA-produced Hendrix records.

New to the Black Keys
I've heard their name kicked around for years. I've even purchased a few of their songs here and there. But you know when you really, really FIND a band? That's what I did with the Black Keys recently, and I can't get enough. As a fan of all genres of music, but hip hop first and foremost, I think their style is perfect. I love their loyalty to their definitive style combined with their openness in trying new things. They are the definition of modern American Blues, in every sense. But also have the balls to do whatever they feel like doing. This list of songs has really helped me to single out some more exceptional songs. As much as I want to own all of their albums in full, I would still prefer to buy my favorite 30 or 40, and this list is very helpful in that department. Needs to be updated to contain songs from their new album tho. Thanks!
The Black Keys Itunes essentials
I was recently in Akron and Heard lots of buzz about this band. I am older guy who loves a good NE Ohio band like Michale Stanley Band. Now this band is taking over from MSB 40 years later. I was so pleased to hear these songs since I live now in Texas and really love the sound of ZZTOP. I hear Billy Gibbons type vocals in some of these songs along with a little Jimmy Page and some Hendrix. What is great about this band, is previous rock legends may have influenced the KEYS but these boys can flat out Rock. My favorite songs are Strange TImes, Tighten Up and Everlasting light. I have listened to all the songs once so looking forward to hearing them all again.
For anyone who loves good Blues Rock, this is an awesome album to add to your Itunes collection. Glad they added some of their 2010 material from the last album.
the Black keys are the best
The Black keys are one of my favorite bands,"Strange times" has to be my favorite....and all of their other stuff is amazing too but if this is kinda like a tribute to their awesome work shouldn't their newest album be on their. Itunes should update this and put Brothers on here because i know "Tighten up'" is also a really great song. Oh! i'm the first to comment so that makes me awesome and the black keys #1 fan!!!
