Pull up a stool and put that money away. We've got the first round covered and the perfect soundtrack for a long night of pints and pouring your heart out. Specifically, an hour or so of the National on repeat — from the threatening skies and scattershot drum shots of "Mistaken for Strangers" and "Apartment Story" to the claustrophobic chords and livid, corrosive choruses of "Mr. November" and "Abel." Why this particular band of Brooklynites? Because Matt Berninger bellows his pitch-black poetry in an end-of-days baritone that'd bring a church to its knees or chill the spines of ex-lovers; because alt-country and chamber pop belong together; and because there's gotta be a good reason why the National's five-night New York City stand was sold-out like an indie Springsteen tour. We'd explain why…if songs like "Baby We'll Be Fine" and "Lit Up" didn't speak plenty for themselves.

Try Listening This Way Once...
Great compilation that you can hear how The National have grown over the years. Start out with Cold Girl Fever or Theory of the Crows. Both from their first album The National. Move on to Murder Me Rachael from their second album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers. The next is the Cherry Tree EP. The only offering from that album here is About Today, but it's by far one of their best. Alligator is next and they started to hit their stride. Give Mr. November a listen. Next came Boxer and you can't mention this album without listening to Fake Empire. The Virginia EP compilation and B-Sides came next, so picking that up is a must. Last, but by no means a step in the wrong direction, came High Violet. Check out Bloodbuzz Ohio to finish. Listening to the songs in this order gives you a better appreciation for how amazing these guys are. Then go back and listen to the whole thing from the beginning!

Listening to The National I hear some of my favorite artists like Joy Division, Nick Cave and even The Pogues. Boxer and High
Violet albums bring better production but you can hear a clear vision throughout all their music. Yes, it's thought provoking a sad but strangely happy and up-beat at times. Just Amazing.
wow
