Episode 58: Should the Canon 7D be Banned From Student Film Competitions? | Episode 58: The Digital Convergence Podcast crew - Chris Fenwick, planetMitch, and Carl Olson talk with special guest Charley Voorhis of Voortex Productions. Charley is also an video production instructor for Wanatchee Valley Tech. His passion for video shines through in his videos, and that passion carries over to his students at Wanatchee Valley Tech. Last year Charley's students placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at the regional Skills USA film contest. The students did so well, that it prompted a controversy: should the Canon 7D camera be banned from use by students who enter the contest? Does shooting with a Canon 7D give students an unfair advantage over other students using older video equipment? Should the equipment used matter? What does this say about the art of filmmaking - is the camera or the person that makes the art? It's an interesting discussion! planetMitch brings us up to date on the latest pricing and pre-order information about the Canon C300 and the new Canon Cinema series T-stop lenses. We learn what the difference is between T stops and F stops and why it matters to high-end video production. | 1/18/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 51 - Good Sounds | Last Wednesday evening I attended the Atlanta Cutters meeting at Georgia Public Broadcasting in Atlanta. There I had the opportunity to meet and listen to Patrick Belden - sound designer and composer for Alton Brown'sGood Eats. Patrick did a fascinating presentation about his sound design work on Good Eats using Avid's ProTools. Patrick Belden's presentation got me thinking about recording live sound, sound design, and sound processing. What can I do to improve my videos' sound? Just how can I get that "Hollywood" sound? How should I get organized for handling audio? What workflow should I follow? I put these questions to Chris Fenwick. A lively discussion ensues about all things audio. Audio in video production is such a huge topic - covering field recording, studio recording, sound design, foley, music and scoring, microphones, monitoring equipment, mixing, audio processing and more. Obviously we only begin to scratch the surface of audio in this episode of Digital Convergence. | 10/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Victoria Taylor-Gore's pastels have been exhibited professionally for over 20 years with representation in premiere art galleries in Sante Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Her pastels have a luminous quality - ordinary scenes appear backlight with warm light emanating from an unseen light source. CleanEpisode 37 - Tara Oldfield and Jason DeRose of Novacut | Episode 37 - Featuring Tara Oldfield and Jason DeRose of Novacut - with host Carl Olson (http://16x9cinema.com) and co-host Chris Fenwick (http://chrisfenwick.com). Chris and I begin this episode by talking about the Digital Dark Ages and huge problem of archiving and backing up video, photo, and other media files - affordably. Our banter migrates over to the controversial question "Is HDSLR video dead?" In the interview segement, I talk with Tara Oldfield and Jason DeRose of Novacut. Jason and Tara are developing a free video editor that allows artists to collaborate over the internet and harness cheap cloud computing. The Novacut editor is aimed at professional-grade TV and movie production using HDSLR cameras (like the 5D Mark II). These cameras have drastically lowered production costs, but we want to reduce costs even further... so they are taking the lean, distributed workflow perfected by the open-source community, and bringing it to video. Distributed teams are a big part of what has allowed open-source to amazingly produce better software, yet for less money and in less time. The Novacut team feels they can do the same for video. Tara and Jason want to see an explosion of financially viable independent TV shows distributed directly to fans over the Internet, funded through direct fan support, licensed under the Creative Commons. Chris and I wrap up the show with the latest on Chris' epic journey to switch from Final Cut Pro to Adobe's Premiere Pro. We talk about the Shane Hurlbut "sizzle" trailor video featuring highlights from Shane's 2010 HDSLR Bootcamp. | 9/29/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

He has a great screencast showing step-by-step this technique: How To Edit B-Roll Faster. Chris and I also talk about a great little stopmotion video that the children of Chris' friend Jeff Dykhouse put together using iStopMotion, a huge Lego collection, and a firewire controlled camcorder over the course of two months. An amazing accomplishment in an attention-deficit world (video embedded at the end of this post). Today's episode features an interesting interview with Trey Ratcliff. In today's episode, Trey and I talk about a wide range of topics. For filmmakers, Trey discusses his interest in how the human brain responds to high speed video. He has conducted a number of interesting experiments using low cost point-and-shoot cameras that can record video at high frame rates. We delve briefly into the topic of HDR photography and then discuss a number of topics on the "edge" of visual arts. Trey manages to fool me into thinking he has taken up oil painting. Find out how he accomplished that! We move on to the topic of "the decade of the artist" - how business models have changed for visual artists in the 21st century. Trey candidly talks about his business model and why he chose to go the route he did. We share our common interest of the amazing music of Patrick O'Hearn. Featuring: Israel Hyman - Izzy Video This episode features Israel "Izzy" Hyman - the creator and producer of the video how-to podcast IzzyVideo.com. This is how Izzy describes himself: "I am obsessed with video. To me, it’s an incredible art form. It has the visuals of photography, but when you add audio and physical movement, it takes the art form to a whole new level. While video seems complex at first, it isn’t. I have devoted the last several years to showing others how easy video is. It’s not the ‘black art’ that people sometimes pretend it is. Developing skills with video is as easy as learning the principles and then practicing them." Izzy's obsession with video comes through loud and clear in our conversation. It's clear that Izzy loves to teach and share what he has learned. We discuss gear a bit, including the Canon 5D Mark II that he recently started using. But then we dive into the gnarly issue of making money with video. Video producers and filmmakers often struggle doing client work - going from one gig to searching for the next. Izzy's approach to the business is different - and he's very open to sharing the "secrets" of his success being a content producer - and he does so in this episode of the 16x9 Cinema Digital Convergence podcast. There are many self-appointed pontificators who arrogantly proclaim that the Canon 5D Mark II is not suitable for serious filmmaking. Shane proves them wrong by doing just that - using the 5D Mark II for serious filmmaking. Shane talks about how he uses the Canon 5D Mark II on feature films and commercials. He talks about his short film, "The Last 3 Minutes" and tells us why and how he did it. Shane candidly talks about his initial failures with DSLR video and the lessons he learned. DSLR video treasure!
I have been listening to these since Carl started it and I have benefited immensely! I started my DSLR biz a few months so I have been hungry for practical resources and this is it! I love that Carl represents the average non-export (he claims to not be an expert, but he knows his stuff :). He let's his guests tell about how they so business, it is a conversation which I love. Great guests, great style and great content! Thanks so much Carl! Always looking forward to the next one!

More than how to...
I love how Carl goes beyond just camera talk, and gets into the use and how to tell stories not just push buttons.
