VideoVertebrates | This week we have been working on our vertebrate unit. We have covered fish, amphibian, reptile and birds. Students have to read an article about eggs tonight and answer one page of questions for homework, due Wednesday. Tomorrow we will be looking at some unfertilized bird eggs and then finishing up with mammals. There will be a quiz on Tuesday on all of the vertebrate notes. | 2/8/12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoAccelerated - Taxonomy | Today we discussed the "dangers" of DHMO and then began our taxonomy unit. We started with notes, which are posted below. There will be a quiz on taxonomy on Thursday. Students should study their notes and should be able to: identify the father of taxonomy define the following terms: taxonomy dichotomous key binomial nomenclature species prokaryote correctly write a scientific name sort organisms into the proper kingdom list the 8 levels of modern classification describe the major kingdoms in terms of number of cells - unicellular or multicellular type of nutrition - autotroph or heterotroph presence of a nucleus - prokaryote or eukaryote use a dichotomous key to identify an organism | 1/10/12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoProtists | This week we began the protist unit. We will be studying the characteristics of the protists and will be looking at Ameoba, Paramecium and Euglena. Over the past two days, students have looked at live specimens of the protists as well as prepared slides. They have two assignments due on Monday, they must complete the protist lab including the questions and also complete a drawing of each of the 3 protists. There will also be a quiz on protists on Tuesday next week. | 1/6/12 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoAccelerated - Compounds | We are continuing in chemistry by discussing compounds. Today we reviewed how to calculate the total mass of a compound. Students have some practice homework (page 134) due Tuesday. We then discussed oxidation number. Tomorrow we will review and then work on predicting how elements form compounds based on that oxidation number. | 12/21/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoTaxonomy - Kingdoms and Keys | Today we completed our discussion of the 6 kingdoms and began working on dichotomous keys. We will be practicing with keys over the next few days and reviewing for the taxonomy quiz on Friday. | 12/19/11 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoAccelerated - Chemistry | Today we began our next unit, chemistry. We started with some notes regarding atoms, subatomic particles and the periodic table. Student do have homework due on Thursday, it is page 131. We continued on Thursday by going over the homework and drawing orbital models of atoms and also electron dot diagrams. Students received two worksheets that they can do to help review for the quiz tomorrow. For the quiz students should be able to: use a period table entry for an element to determine the symbol the name atomic number atomic mass # of protons, neutrons and electrons electron configuration draw an orbit model of an atom if given its periodic table entry identify the subatomic particles found in the nucleus of an atom identify important characteristics of an atom | 12/15/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoNutrition Quiz - Accelerated and Science 7 | In class accelerated and regular classes are finishing the nutrition unit. The food test lab was due on Thursday for regular science 7 and is due on Monday for accelerated science students. There will also be a nutrition quiz, Monday for regular science 7 and Tuesday for accelerated science. For the quiz, students should study their notes and be able to: list the six essential nutrients define the following chemistry terms Organic compound Inorganic compound Atom Compound Element Describe the typical caloric needs of a young adult and describe balance of calories burned and calories taken in Identify the function of the six essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals Calculate the number of calories in a food, based on the grams of fat, protein and carbohydrates Students will be allowed to use a calculator for the quiz, if they bring it to class A hard copy of the nutrition notes are posted below, along with videos of the notes. | 12/9/11 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoAccelerated - Photosynthesis and Respiration | Today we began the end of our microscopes and cells unit. We reviewed the cell processes of photosynthesis and respiration. We will be having a quiz on these topics on Tuesday. For the quiz students should be able to: write the chemical equation for photosynthesis (a word bank will be provided) write the chemical equation for respiration (a word bank will be provided) identify the organelle where respiration and photosynthesis take place identify the reactants and products in a chemical equation determine which types of organisms photosynthesis and respiration happen in identify the reactants and products of both photosynthesis and respiration | 12/5/11 | Free | View In iTunes
