Android Atlas Weekly 84: Chrome finally hits Android (Podcast) | Chrome comes to Android with one gigantic caveat. Or maybe two. Apple forked KHTML in 2002 to develop Webkit. It’s sad to see Antgoo leave, at least now he won’t be flailing his phone at the Camera for dates. - kevin —– Hey guys, I just caught your podcast for this week, where you talk about bigger screen sizes. I must be in a minority, as I want my phone screen as LARGE as possible, given that I just the screen (games, web surfing, videos, etc) exponentially more than making calls. If I could’ve got a GNexus at the size of a Note or Dell Streak, I would’ve in a hearbeat! Great show – Ryan —– Voice mail about Facebook. Fit it in where ever —– Hi my name is josh from the Chicago area. in response to your voice mail about the callers phone not syncing with Facebook. You over looked the most valuable piece of evidence in that call. The fact he said he had a galaxy nexus. Facebook blocking syncing is so last summer news. Right about the time google plus rolled out Facebook blocked syncing to the nexus class phones. When I bought my Nexus S 4G the Sprint employee reminded me. I can’t remember if it was exactly Facebook that did this or google. The other Android phones can do it because whatever skin they run is actually doing the Facebook syncing not Android. So if your running a pure vanilla Android (Nexus class) you cannot sync because Facebook and google can’t get along in the social network arena. I knew this when I bought my Nexus S 4G and honestly don’t miss it seeing as I have over 400 friends on Facebook and that just clogs up my contact list and my phone would always blow up all day with Facebook notifications and run the battery down even faster. Love the show -Josh- http://androidcommunity.com/google-says-facebook-contacts-sync-violates-android-tos-20110223/ —– Hey guys! Love the show, been listening for a few months now. As a truck driver, it really helps the miles fly by. I bought the Motorola Bionic in September and saw the data connectivity issues almost immediately. Heard there was going to be an OTA update that would fix this problem. Well, I got said OTA update, but airplane mode is still my most used app on my phone in order to reset my data connection. I randomly, and frequently lose my data connection (4G & 3G) out of nowhere. Is there an actual, working fix on the way that you guys know about? Thanks for all the hard work and great entertainment. Android Atlas Weekly Ep. 83: Android users' bathroom habits (Podcast) | A new galaxy nexus, a new samsung tab and do you really answer your phone in the bathroom? all that and more on this week's edition of Android Atlas Weekly for February 1st, 2012. I understand there are some performance issues installing an app to the SD card, but as someone with a MyTouch 3G Slide, my memory is at a premium and installing to SD often decides if I can use an app. I know there are apps that can force install apps to SD if I root, but the MT3GS is notorious for being tricky to root and my technical prowess is lacking. Just was wondering. Love da show! Rich in Lovely Cleveland —– I wonder why Google haven’t released Chrome for android yet? They have the phone OS and they have the browser. Making the two become one shouldn’t be that hard. The only options right now are opera Mobile and Firefox Mobile. Best regards Henrik —– I am new to android and also email and tweeting. Not good at either. But I watch the show and enjoy it. I need help! I have an HTC thunderbolt and it is awful. I have had three one in June a second in October and a third in November. Each one the software was awful. It failed in each one ,phone calls froze,I could not listen to music without being disconnected or watch video podcasts, and to download was a nightmare. The customer reps were great. But the phone is still crappy. My contract is up at the end of the year, please , any suggestions would be appreciated. My carrier is Verizon are there any phones that I should watch for. Thanks Guys! – Deboarah —– Hi guys, I have a question. A few weeks ago I was trying to view some some NFL videos on my new Nexus (which I love, btw). As you may know, the mobile NFL app didn’t work on the Nexus at launch, so i went to the desktop site and tried to watch the Flash videos, with very mixed (mostly bad) results. Aside from an advertisement, I was never able to see any videos. I’m sure these bugs will be worked out eventually, so i’m not too worried about that. The surprising thing was that I went to the site on my wife’s ipad expecting to see an empty frame where the video should be but instead the video was actually there. (most likely encoded in html5, i’m assuming) I’ve noticed this on a few other sites, like engadget for example. What gives? Is there some kind of user agent trickery going on here? Are android users being forced to watch flash videos even when an html5 video is available? Flash is awesome when its the only option, but if it isnt the only option do we not have a choice? And finally, is there something android users can do to request the html5 video. I tried switching the Dolphin browser user agent to ‘ipad’ but i was still told to download flash. —– I am a proponent of flash on mobile but I, and probably most users, would prefer the html5 video if its actually available, especially on a slow connection. What i’m trying to find out is whats going on here. As far as I know, the android browser handles html5 video just fine. But, even after uninstalling flash | 2/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Can you tell me why you are so dismissive of the device? I know its not the bestest most powerful smartphone out there but it is working fine for me. And it looks Kickass. bob s. -I want this: http://www.g-shockzone.com/content.php?275-G-Shock-smartphone-previews-as-CES-2012 —– Greetings Guys from De Nederlands I love the show and listen to it every week. The segment in your last broadcast about user interphase guidelines really caught my attentions. I agree with you about the inconsistency of user interphases with Android apps. In comparison to iOS, it is bloody annoying. I applaud Google for publishing guidelines but I don’t think it goes far enough. I think a simple solution would be for Google to provide a section in the Market for apps delelopers that have followed the guidelines. They should then endorse the product with something like a Google Certificate of Interphase Compliance. The first thing you should see when you open Market is the Google compliant apps. Still keep Market open to developers who wish to use their own interphases. you just have to troll for them. I think that this would please everyone without treading on anyone’s toes and encourage developers to keep to the guidelines. I believe that this would be a cheap and easy solution to one of the most irritating aspects of Android. I use the Samsung Galaxy S Plus and I love the thing. Android is just a great system and is only going to get bigger and better. Thanks a bunch guys for a great show, It is something I look forward to each week. Groetjes Andy (Amsterdam) —– I have an EVO 3D and I’ve never had any battery problems. Unless its in roaming or a bad app kicks in, its never been a problem. All day power, even with games playing. I know you guys like to rip in the phone because you’re 3D Haters, but even without 3D, its a sweet and fast phone. – Max Title: The Evo is 4G: Title says is all. You guys need to learn more about the EVO 3D. It still is the best phone in Sprint, and likely will be until those new Quad core NVIDIA phones come out. (Please tell me you guys know about those. You seem to know little about Android) :\ —– Hello Android Atlas I am Ander and I have an Xperia Play. I have been considering rooting it but I fear for my warranty going void since I have already need to use it in the past. Resnetly I discovered this rooting software called Gingerbreak that is supposed to be able to root your phone without voiding your warranty. I this true? And is Gingerbreak a safe and good way to root your phone? P.S. Keep up the good work. – Ander —– Hello Justin and Antuan, I will start by saying I love the show, even if at times it gives me serious tech envy. Please assist. Or will you credit my card as back payment Regards Anna-Mart —– Just listened to your show from CES and wanted to say that you definetly don’t need root to get google wallet on theVerizon Galaxy Nexus, it’s actually S simple as side loading the .apk. I’ve done it on my phone and set up the prepaid card, although I haven’t gotten to try the NFC yet. http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/12/18/how-to-get-google-wallet-on-verizon-galaxy-nexus-sans-root/ Please excuse my brevity… sent from my Galaxy Nexus. -Matt —– Dearest hosts, please know that it’s NOT necessary to root your phone in order to use Google Wallet. Simply going to Getjar’s app store should make the necessary .apk file available. I believe it can also can be found on the XDA forums. This is how I got it on my GNex, which isn’t rooted. Ryan —– Hi Android Atlas, What’s the story with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus battery life? I’ve had the phone for 3 days now. I left the phone un-plugged for 9.5 hours last night, it started out at 100%, by this morning it was 0% (according to the metrics, 90% cell standby, 8% phone idle, 2% Android OS). The valued employees (aka morons) at the Verizon store told me “”that’s the way it is”". The Verizon phone support person I called agreed to send me a replacement battery at no charge to try that out. Any thoughts? Should I start wearing a hat with solar panels to charge the phone as I walk around? Is 4G battery usage that bad? Thank you Scott —– VOICE MAIL from Javon —– “Hey, Android Atlas. First, I want to thank you for being so informative in responding to my last email (the one about using my phone as a network adaptor for my Xbox). Second: I recently got a pair of Skullcandy earbuds with built-in controls and an in-line mic. On an iPhone, these controls would adjust the volume, puase music, and answer calls etc. With my Motorolla Cliq 2 running Froyo, however, these controls don’t ever do what they’re inteded to do. The headphones cause my phone to redial the last number I called when I plug in them, even though I didn’t touch the controls; they launch the voice commands application when I unplug them, again, without me actually touching the controls; the volume controls won’t actually adjust the volume, though they’ll occassionally pause or skip a song; and the in-line mic won’t work when I’m making calls, though they’ll turn off the phone’s built-in microphone when they’re plugged in. As far as I know, this will happen with any other headphones with built-in controls as well, so I know my headphones aren’t buggy. So, Atlas Crew, I would like to know if there is a way to fix any, if not all, of these issues. If so, let me know. Thanks. OnLive to stream Windows desktop to iPad, Android devices | In 2010, OnLive introduced online-streaming games to PC and Mac users. Last year, it extended the platform to mobile devices. And this year, the company is focusing on productivity apps, starting by offering free basic Microsoft Office functionality to iPad users. Beginning on Thursday, U.S. iPad users will be able to download an app from the iTunes App Store to use the free service. Users can sign up early, starting Tuesday. The free service provides 2 gigabytes of storage. After an initial testing phase, OnLive will offer a $9.99-per-month OnLive Desktop Pro version with 50GB of storage and access to additional software, including programs that customers can download themselves to OnLive's servers. The company will also launch an enterprise version, with which IT professionals will be able to add additional software and allocate employee access privileges. Even with the free service, when you sign on, you see a Windows 7 desktop, which, based on a hands-on demo at the company's Palo Alto, Calif., office, starts up very quickly. OnLive is taking advantage of some of the features built into Windows 7 for tablets (yes, Microsoft has supported Windows tablets for years) to give users an iPad-like experience, even though they're using the iPad as a terminal to run Windows. Features include pinch and zoom, drag and drop, and the ability to draw or write on the screen with a finger or a stylus. The version of Office available for streaming includes handwriting recognition. Based on the demo, Windows runs remarkably fast. OnLive CEO Steve Perlman said in an interview (scroll down to listen to podcast) that the company is applying the same technology that enables it to stream fast-action video games. Game users, Perlman said, "can't have a laggy experience; it has to be nice and smooth with good-quality visuals. So we're taking that same discipline we developed to make video games work remotely and now applying it to productivity." Perlman said previous streaming efforts that "focused entirely on productivity didn't have that standard, and people accepted the fact that maybe, when you moved a window, it was a little choppy, if it was remote. The Pro and Enterprise versions will also enable document sharing, collaborating, and presenting. With the collaboration features, people will be able to work on documents together. The service will eventually be available to other platforms, including iPhones, Android devices, PCs, Macs, and even TVs. OnLive offers an optional TV adapter that can be used to "broadcast" a PowerPoint presentation to TVs or--by attaching a pointing device and keyboard to the TV--to fully use the apps from a connected TV. I listen at work while programming on Fridays helps the day go by and keeps me informed on the latest tech news. I have a question and forgive me if it sounds like a dumb one... But I've been hearing a lot of the tech blogs talk say that We should buy our phones separate from our renewals or rather than being on a contract? Haven't looked at my bill yet but how would I be saving money? Don't you normally get a lower rate being on a contract? Isn't that why the phone is so cheap because they make it back up from the contract? I am on Sprint would you recommend I spend the example $500 on the Samsung phone and can I call when my renewal is up and have my bill lowered somehow since I'm not on contract and I didn't buy the phone from them? Please fill me in. I would appreciate it if you guys could go over this briefly on your next show and briefly break it down for us who would truly like to know and be better shoppers. Thanks again, keep up the good work. PS Not to knock on your competitor The Verge but they talk a bit too much, thank you all for staying on topic, most of the time... and keeping the show short roughly an hour. They are intelligent but an hour and a half or more of simply rambling on and not staying on topic is a bit crazy and sad... anyways... J Look forward to your reply thanks guys, Laters... If you use the website If This Then That (ifttt.com) then you can setup triggers off Instagram. For example you could setup a ""recipe"" so that every time you upload to Instagram it tweets or post to Facebook that picture. Or if you post a picture to Facebook have it copy that to Instagram. Also Tweetdeck shows Instagram photos when you click the link without having to leave the application where clicking on a PicPlz link will open the browser. Hopefully PicPlz will catch up to this soon because I like the API hooks with Instagram, but hate the closedness of the service to just iPhone users. Second...quit hating the Blackberry OS. You need to find someone with a new OS7 touch screen device and play with it because the thing is dang zippy! Much fast than my Droid3. I still think there is a place in the Enterprise for Blackberry and it's still the best at communications for business. That said, Android and IOS is tops for consumers in my opinion. I started uploading my itunes music into Google music, syncing my Outlook with Gmail. I""ve been checking the Androids phones for the last 3 months and decided to buy a Samsung Galaxy S2. Then I heard about ICS and the Nexus. Then I heard there is no mass storage. My reason for the change is the drop and drag feature. I was also going to buy the GALAXY Tab 10.1 and I found out from TWIT TV that you cannot drop & drag on this device either. That is the reason for my switch. I'm looking for an Android tablet & phone that I can drop and drag & the tablet has to have a data plan. Do you have any suggestions. Keep up the great work. Thanks Philip --- As much as I'd like to point the finger at Verizon, it seems that GOOGLE might not be promoting the ""open"" philosophy on their google app that fans want to see after all. It seems they're refusing to open up the API to the secure element (SE) and Verizon wants to use it for their ISIS. I sent it between meetings that day and meant to be more detailed. I’ve had several friends that were waiting for the phone and got something else because of Verizon putting their logo on it and apparent Verizon bloatwear. They said that Verizon is destroying the idea of the Nexus line up, which is supposed to be like the iPhone and be completely free of any carrier tampering. To me, I’m like you guys, I don’t care but if i had to choose a side, it would be against it. If Google is going to start letting the carriers call the shots on there flags ship devices, they shouldn’t bother worrying about making a pure Google phone anymore. Just make a Nexus device or just the software, release it and let the carriers have their way with it. Thanks for taking the time to read my letter. –Matt http://phandroid.com/2011/11/18/verizons-galaxy-nexus-will-have-bloatware-barely/ http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/17/verizon-branded-lte-enabled-galaxy-nexus-confirmed-in-official/?m=false —– Hi Antgoo, Justin, i have a question about my samsung galaxy s2. when i plug something into the headphone jack (oldskool cassette adapter) the microphone will mute making it impossible for people to hear me when trying to do hands-free while i am driving. i looked in the settings but i dont see anything about how to change that setting; i must be missing something? app of the week suggestion: palm os graffiti for android (http://bit.ly/uDduFR) thanks –schneidz —– Can you move the show to an hour later? Or move it back to Thursday? I can’t ever watch it anymore at the current slot. It stinks for me. –Jason —– Hey guys, I’ve only been watching your show for a little while, but so far, I love it. I just have a question that you might (and hopefully) be able to help me with. I’m really big into ROMs and rooting and “all that” for my DROID2. Right now, I am running an off build of CM7, it’s the RevNumbers ROM that I found in ROM Manager. This was really the first time I’ve actually stuck with a ROM because I like it so much. But there was one disappointment, however. Coming from the Stock ROM for the DROID2, it allows me to charge the phone with the device powered off via the Charge Only App (I believe that’s what it’s called since that’s what’s in the /system/apps folder. When I just tried to charge my phone powered off, it was not able to do so. So I went back into the stock ROM and copied the two Charge Only files that I saw, one was ChargeOnlyMode.apk, and another one was ChargeOnlyMode.odex (I think). Either way, I tried moving them, the move was successful, however, charging the phone powered off, was not a success :-(. Do you know why this would be happening? How can I get my phone to be powered off and still able to charge? Another question I have is with the Android Market website. Since I just installed a new ROM on my phone, I need to get all of my apps back (I don’t use Titanium Backup). So, I usually go onto the website.
