Customer Reviews
Very opiniated and sometimes refreshing and frustrating at the same time
I first found out this podcast via the somethingawful forums and needless to say, I kind of love AND hate it at the same time. First off, these fans are very knowledable of Anime and it shows. The problem with this is their viewpoints rub off on me as elitist. For example they tend to prefer "old school" Anime and tend to heavily criticize popular shows and current trends in Anime (but not always). While I'm not down with most of the Anime they recommend to watch, the hosts of the show offer a humorous view to many of their reviews and opinions.
This is a fasinating talkshow for a wide variety of anime fans
This podcast is very funny. The three members of the cast have an extremely profound knowledge of what seems to me like all anime. Some aspects of the show are over my head, like some of the shows I have not seen, but to their credit even if I havent seen the show I am very entertained by their reviews and ideas about the show(Since the last show I have been franticall searching for the Area 88 OAV series). I recomend this show to all anime fans, the show will introduce you to many new shows and genres of anime.
The only hour+ podcast that I love
Out of all the anime podcasts out there, I typically only learn something I didn't already know from AWO. Instead of hearing another review of the fansub of the week or the show that's aired on Cartoon Network in it's entirety twice, AWO goes out there on a limb and lets us know about stuff like Animal Treasure Island. No one else is watching that, let alone reviewing it. Ironically the show's greatest strength (esoterica) is probably it's greatest weakness in the minds of younger listeners. A lot of the anime podcast audience is comprised of high school students who are "n00bs" to anime, and frankly, AWO will fly over the head of any n00b. It's a show for older, more mature, and more seasoned anime fans - anime fans who are bitter about these youngsters bringing anime into the mainstream. Anything that's hip and cool and new that the kids really like is typically hated by Gerald and Daryl, so the very kids who could learn the most from the show are probably unsubscribing. That said, the show is marked "explicit" for a good reason - the trio of hosts is not afraid to talk about hentai, yuri, and the "dudes being rude" in yaoi. That material is certainly not appropriate for people under 18. All of the guests they've had so far are wonderfully entertaining. It's hard for a lot of other podcasts to stay on topic and stay entertaining for more than an hour, and my short attention span guarantees that I have to take breaks during most long-format shows, but AWO is an exception - it's the only show that I can listen to from beginning to end, only breaking to answer the phone or interact with coworkers. AWO is also the only podcasts that I will listen to twice if I'm really bored. It's so amusing I don't mind the reruns (if there were reruns).
