Program Wrap-up | I hope you have enjoyed "Ask The Pet Psychic". I want people to feel empowered to create partnerships with their animals based on cooperation instead of control. We will review the basic skills of Animal Communication: Awareness, Focus, Visualization, Creating Expectations and using Emotion to Establish Boundaries. Some of the relationship problems people have with their animals relate to confusing dominance for affection and not having clear expectations for behavior. I will also give my Take Five list; take 5 minutes to make your pet happier and healthier. Please go to my website http://www.pattypetpsychic.com to get reading and find out how you can improve your relationship with your animal companions. I am on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pattypetpsychic ) and often offer discounted readings to my friends. Thanks for listening, Patty Rayman | 10/7/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Animals in Disasters | What would you do if you had to evacuate your home on short notice because of a natural or man-made disaster? What would you do with your animals? These are not theoretical questions. There have been several man-made disasters in the news recently and caring for animals has been an important part of the response. We will talk about including your animals in your disaster planning and the things that you need to consider before something happens. These issues get even more complex when dealing with large animals like horses or farm animals. Using the logical left side of your brain to prepare for a situation that is going to be very reactive and emotional is something that we all need to do. Animals are part of our families and we have a responsibility to keep them safe. | 9/30/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Helping Animals in Your Community | Do you remember going to the "Pound" to get a pet? That word used to mean a terrible place where animals were "put to sleep". Not anymore. Salt Lake County Animal Services is on track to becoming one of the first municipal no-kill shelters in the country. Unlike privately funded rescue organizations, municipal shelters can't turn animals away. This is a taxpayer funded, government agency that is required to take in strays, lost or abandoned animals. Through a unique public-private partnership, Salt Lake County finds a home for every adoptable animal that comes through the door. I will be talking with Shawnee Larrabee, Director of SLCo Animal Services and Dr. Kay Brown, DVM, Board Chair of FACES (Friends for Animal Care and Effective Solutions) about how people have come together to significantly change the way animals are treated in our community. If you think too many great animals are being needlessly killed in your area, listen in and find out how you can make a difference. | 9/23/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Moving, Travel and other Traumas | This week we will discuss how you get your animal from one place to another. Moving is probably one of the most traumatic things that we subject our pets to. I will give you some tips on how to make it less stressful for your animal friends. Many people love to travel with their animals (not just dog people, some people travel with their cats). This can be a really fun experience for everyone or a total nightmare. I also talk a little bit about emergency preparedness and transporting your animal out of a dangerous situation. We will also have several callers this week. Everyone has questions about their pets. I would love to answer yours on Ask The Pet Psychic. Please go to the Contact page on my website and you can get a free reading on the show. | 9/16/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Solving Problem Pet Behavior: You Can Do It! | What constitutes problem behavior for your pet? This is a very personal question, some people allow behavior that others would not tolerate. To me, problem behavior produces negative emotion and it is something that you want to change. Too many people don't try hard enough to change their animal's behavior and they get stuck in a situation where the animal is in control and the person feels annoyed, frustrated and helpless. These emotions have a large impact on the quality of the relationship that you create with your animal. The first thing you have to do is use your advanced thinking skills to identify what behavior creates negative emotion for you and then make a plan to change it. If you can get yourself out of an emotional and reactive state, you can choose to use your observational skills, your ability to understand future consequences and some emotional resolve to change problem behaviors with your animal, no matter how entrenched. | 9/9/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Hey, Baby. What's your Breed? | Domestic companion animals are, in many ways human creations. We have created many different breeds of dogs, cats and horses to do different jobs and to be aesthetically pleasing to us. Breeds are in some ways stereotypes and are a simplified way of classifying groups of individuals. Certain breeds have definite characteristics that influence the individual's physical, emotional and mental abilities. Breed influences temperament and behavior, especially in dogs and horses. We will talk about some generalizations and misconceptions about breeds and the disturbing trend of Breed-Specific legislation. We will also discuss why you should avoid "designer' dogs and how to select a good breeder, if you think you must have a purebred. Too many people don't do their research and end up with an animal that does not fit their lifestyle or personality. About a quarter of all animals in shelters are purebreds, and just about every breed of dog has a rescue organization dedicated to it. | 8/26/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

How I hate to say Goodbye | When you leave for work in the morning, does it involve sad eyes, whining, guilt and anxiety? Is it more like the third act of a tragic opera or do you just walk out the door and start your day? No one likes to be left, especially social animals like dogs, horses and birds, but your behavior and attitude has a huge impact on how that little drama plays out every day. Separation anxiety is a very common complaint from my clients and I only see a few cases a year that actually require medication. Often, separation anxiety is just like a play with the person and animal each giving a carefully rehearsed performance. This is a hard behavior to change because both parties get something out of it and You, the highly intelligent party, need to be aware of your role. You can't change your animal's behavior unless you change your focus. Are you ready to change the way you think (and act) to reduce the trauma-drama in your life? | 8/19/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

What do animals Really want? | The most common question people have about their animals is: are they happy? I usually tell them, yes. And no. Sure, they enjoy new toys and tasty treats, but that isn't what they really want. What they really want is a deep relationship with a human and to be acknowledged as the individuals that they are. We have talked about creating expectations for your animal's behavior, but what do they expect from humans? Our ancestors made a contract with animals through the process of domestication. Animals are not selfless beings that just want to give us love. They expect things like fairness, autonomy and respect in exchange for all the work they do for us. They expect to be our partners, not our possessions. The human-animal bond goes a lot further than providing them with food, water, shelter and the occasional belly rub. Awareness of their mental, emotional and spiritual nature is key for meeting their expectations. | 8/12/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

You are what You Eat (so is your pet) | Food is a huge part of our relationship with animals. About 30% of the animals I work with are overweight and many others suffer from poor diets. You need to use your human analytical skills to provide a healthy diet for your animals. Your dog is not impressed by the pictures of fresh veggies on the dog food bag and your cat does not identify with the feline version of the Italian Supermodel on the commercial. Food has a huge affect on behavior. We will talk about how to give treats effectively, read the ingredient label and sort out some of the hype related to what is a "good" food for your pet. Do you have questions about your pet's health? I would love to talk to you and your special animals. My House is Not your Bathroom! | Potty issues are the number one reason animals are re-homed. We will discuss some of the physical causes of inappropriate elimination and what works and what doesn't to change this all too common bad behavior. Some breeds can be very difficult to house train individuals vary quite a lot as well. Training a puppy and re-training an older dog use similar techniques. Don't give up! You can take control and get your house back. | 7/29/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

When a Pet Dies | The only fault of animals is that they don't live long enough. At some point, every pet lover will experience the pain of losing a beloved companion. We will discuss how to deal with the feeling of emptiness and finding meaning in the loss. We will also talk about when it's time to say goodbye and the guilt that can be associated with euthanizing an animal. Animals are still part of your life even when they are not physically present. I will share some of the ways my clients have memorialized their friends and a couple of exercises from my Grief Support for Pet Loss workshop that can help you deal with the emotions you may have experienced. I do readings for many people who are struggling with end of life issues for their animals and those who are having difficulty coping with a pet's death. Using Emotions to change Behavior | You have a very effective training tool in your human toolbox, your emotions! You can easily learn how to apply both positive and negative emotions to change your animal's behavior. This is a much more sophisticated way of dealing with your animal than giving rewards and punishment. You are choosing to think like your animal and are communicating in the way they understand the best. Humans think, animals feel. You can create a relationship based on communication rather than conflict. We will also be taking listener calls. Patty would love to talk to you and your pets!
