Fantastic Podcast!

First, let me say I am a fan of the movies discussed in this podcast. I discovered this through another long running podcast and I'm very glad I did. One of the other reviews states there is a lack of research. They are clueless! Vince does do his research and provides a great amount of little known information and trivia. I have found his interviews entertaining and down to earth. He is simply a fan who is doing what many of us wish we could do. I look forward to each show. Keep up the great work!

THE BEST OUT THERE FOR THE BABY BOOMER'S B-HORROR MOVIES!!

Hey Vince, I too am a baby boomer and grew up with these films, and sometimes when they are bad, is when they are the best! You really do your homework and have some great guest interviews, and so thanks, and keep up the great work! Your pal in Karloffornia, Nick Charles

No pros, but your regular B-movie buds

Okay, props must be given for the work that has gone into this over the years, as it has certainly grown for the better. This podcast covers a wide range of cult and genre films (usually 1970s and earlier and focuses mainly on horror/monster films) and his hosted now by Vince Rotolo, his wife Mary (a recent addition as I am sure she wanted in on the fun) and their phone-friend author Nic Brown. You should know right off that these guys (yes, a woman is involved but using the word "guys" here as a term for "group") are no experts. They are fans. Unfortunately, most of the history and info they report on the films is being read live off of IMDB and Wikipedia which is not always the most accurate source. It seems their studies are not from years of reading and watching but rather a recent interest in the films they have been casually watching over the years. Sometimes I listen to them struggle with who the director of Godzilla was (or recently that there was even a remake of the film in the works, widely reported over the last year and a half) or some more widely known fact about Ray Harryhausen I have known since I was 12 and I yell into the ipod. I'm no expert myself, but knowing that Vince has been watching these films since the late 50s you might expect a deeper knowledge of their history but that part of his interest as mentioned seems to be since he started podcasting.

BUT.... at the same time, they are not trying to come off as scholarly experts (though a few of their listeners certainly head in that direction), and the fact that they are not trying to over justify the movies is a nice change (I never much went for the over articulation of film analysis). They are like your buddies you watched these films with as a kid and just laugh at the bad and admire the good. You will notice that about 3/4 of the films are usually Vince's "all time favorites" and almost every film he determines "you must have in your collection", so don't expect extremely objective reviews. They may spend a little bit too much time on the synopsis of the films (Nic has a great wit and obviously watches the films thoroughly, but many times I tune out after 5 minutes or so of it). And they have a long running joke they have beaten to death playing the music from a B-movie that Nic feigns hating.... but it is all and all harmless fun and you do feel that these guys really love these films no matter what the extent of their knowledge of them are. They have a group of loyal callers who they play their comments on every show and has a nice family atmosphere open to anyone. For that, I like it a lot. And they also tend to talk about films that I have admired since I was young. So my overall feeling and my 5 stars is for the fact that they are all very likable and have a nice easy listening format to just listen to guys admiring and enjoying these old great monster films. It may lack a more thorough review into the skill of these films (camera work, pacing, story arcs, etc.) but makes up for it with their no-nonsense fan-boy love of the films.
