Customer Reviews
Interesting but not insightful
Jeff and Joel are good writers, and they certainly know how to inspire emotion in their readers and listeners. However, their views on programming are biased toward what they know, and they don't seem to make an effort to expand beyond that level of understanding. The tips may be good for beginners, or those who happen to like the same technology as the hosts, but anyone else can skip this podcast and save their time.
Learning C is like learning anatomy before going to med school
C is the stick shift of programming. However, it was also nice to hear Jeff indicate that he hasn't taken the time to learn C which Joel is adamant about. I started in what Joel calls, 'Here is a select statement kid, now go build an enterprise system' days of PowerBuilder. I have spent the last 13 years trying to learn everything I can about programming (including C) in an effort to someday feel like I can stand at a white board with the likes of Joel and Jeff Atwood. But I must say after 13 years I still miss Sybase's 'datawindow' control when I'm coding; it should have been getting easier by now. That said their are now two listeners, me and Joel's Dad. Great dialog, Great Cast. I also get a kick out of the intro 'We are live on air' of the first two casts, I would stick with that.
Waste of time
At best this podcast is just the latest ego-driven indulgence of Jeff Atwood and Joel Spolsky. Joel has written some really great software development commentary in the past, but appears to have moved on to sitting comfortably on his title as celebrity programmer. No real thought seems to have gone into these podcasts, no valuable insights are shared, and the whole thing has the feel of two pals in a bar chatting for the purpose of impressing anyone eavesdropping on the conversation. The real surprise of the podcast is just how little Jeff or Joel seem to know about technology outside of their Windows-based engineering comfort zone. Joel in particular seems very comfortable delivering authoritative opinions on every topic under the sun, despite seldom having any idea what he's talking about. Each of the three or four episodes I bothered listening to included at least one "sun revolves around the earth" proclamation from Spolsky. At seventy minutes for each episode, I have trouble imagining any audience outside the Atwood and Spolsky families for whom this podcast is worth the time.
