Dr Secretan reeeeading kids books! (even for the ginger ones!) | He’s played Tony Blair, next up is Postman and is most well known for being an arrogant, bully with big hair (oddly enough they all have something in common)! Stephen Mangan talks about life after Green Wing, reading kids books, his first role being the female lead, life at RADA and lets me in on the best piece of directorial advice he’d ever received. Stephen will make you howl with laughter and by the end of it you’ll want to dig out that box set of Green Wing, now festering in your DVD cabinet and re-watch the entire lot! Enjoy. | 2/16/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Simon Callow loves to laugh! | Larger than life actor and director Simon Callow talks about his new book ‘Charles Dickens and the great theatre of the world’ at the Dickens Museum. This is a man who sold his entire collections of LPs for a second hand typewriter in order to kick start his love of writing. He admits that he had very little material to write about as a child due to his lack of life experience, but once he discovered the joy of theatre (which we Brits do so well!) it was then that Simon wrote a letter on his knackered typewriter to Sir Lawrence Olivier expressing how much he loved the work he was doing at the National. Would you believe it? He got a reply? And what did the big man have to say? Tune in and listen to what was in that letter which set Callow up to run away and join the theatre; never to leave again. | 2/2/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan Up Junkie! | Zoe Strimpel could possibly heralded as the real life Carrie Bradshaw, with her auburn curly hair, sassy personality and her ’all in the name of research’ work ethic! Strimpel endeavours to answer what all women have been asking for decades, ‘Why hasn’t he called?’, ‘What’s changed?’, ‘Why doesn’t he like me?’, ‘Does he just want me for sex?’ Unfortunately, most women put themselves through this trauma every time a man comes on the scene but now it’s time for a change! You need to go on a diet and fast! This calls for immediate action which can only be prescribed in the style of a 10 step programme, The Man Diet. Whether you’re a man or a women listening to this, Strimpel’s findings are insightful and humorous. In this episode she tells me about how we all need to moderate our need for ‘junk food love’ a fashionably coined phrase by Strimpel when researching this book. | 1/6/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Louisa Young and Dan Stevens present... | Happy New Year lovely BookD listeners and welcome back to what we hope will be a great year for laughs, interviews, confessions, new projects, old projects, maybe dancing, a little debate and who doesn’t love singing as well as a little smidgen of teasing in our fortnightly boost of culture! To kick start the year, I interview Louisa Young, author of ‘My Dear I Wanted to tell You’ which publishes on the 5th January in paperback. The audiobook was read by Dan Stevens and is an honest, in depth and inspiring 25 minutes on how Louisa began writing, which famous musician helped her rethink her career path, her views on plastic surgery, her views on bunkers in Kensington Gardens, and that injecting paraffin wax into your face is never a good idea! Yep, got that! Thanks for the tip! | 1/4/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Lindsey Kelk’s wonderful levels of over sharing | Humour in a novel designed specifically for women? Come on! Is that really possible? Or are we women only designed to read the same old trash every time with a formula that ensures heart ache, distress, closure and eventual falling head over heels in love again. Nonsense! Utter nonsense! Lindsey Kelk writes an escapist series of books for women called the ‘I heart’ series… following this coined phrase are various cities such as New York, Hollywood, Paris and now Vegas. Lindsey Kelk worked originally in the publishing industry and recounts her rather unusual experience of the ‘How do I get published’ road which frankly, normally ends up at a dead end without an agent. After being told by an agent that her name sounded like a cat being sick (charming!) Lindsey found other avenues to go down to get her first book ‘I heart New York’ on the shelves. When listening to this telephone interview you’ll realise that you don’t always need the same old formula to get a book published, both in your style of writing within a competitive genre and getting out there, giving a book the exposure it deserves. | 11/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Cecelia Ahern 'What's in a name?' | Cecelia Ahern became a publishing sensation over night when her mother advised her to call a few agents in London with a story that she wrote in long hand, on numerous A4 refill pads. ‘P.S I LOVE YOU’ was the book which later became a Hollywood rom com film starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. From that moment on Cecelia has enjoyed almost a decade as a published author and talks to BookD about her 9th novel ‘The time of my life’. | 11/4/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitRichard E Grant Invades with 'BALLS!' Part 1 | Richard E Grant is a man renowned for playing the more narcissistic, menacing and deranged characters in television and film so when BookD got the opportunity to record the guy and ask him about his reading of Conn Iggulden’s new book ‘Conqueror’ I was surprised, but was it pleasant? | 10/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Eddie Redmayne (Nice Guy Eddie) | ‘Eddie Redmayne is, by common consent, one of the most exciting actors to hit both stage and screen’ The Independent wrote earlier in the year. Eddie may not be a name that everyone knows just yet, but as far as we’re concerned this will inevitably change after ‘My Week with Marilyn’ starts playing in UK cinemas from November. Eddie plays the lead in this one as the Eton educated, fresh faced Colin Clark. Colin is an upper class/ my parents mingle with the rich and famous/ trust fund baby type, who wrote a memoir about a week in his life that would change him forever. You’ve got to commend Colin for his aspirations toward a more ‘normal’ lifestyle. He wants to prove himself as a passionate, willing and good mannered individual and doesn’t wish for his upper crust background to be the only way to get his foot in the door (although it did get him through Sir Lawrence Olivier’s door). The great man was a friend to Colin’s parents and once Larry knew that Colin was keen to work in the film industry he readily made him a runner during filming of his 1957 hit ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ starring the Baron and the ultimate American blonde, Marilyn Monroe. Contrary to several warnings given to Colin during filming about this leading lady and her needs, wants and must haves, Colin wasn’t afraid to get to know Ms Monroe a little better than most of the mere mortals on set. He documents this in his memoir which was later published as a book entitled ‘My Week with Marilyn’ which published originally in 2000. Redmayne plays Clark alongside Michelle Williams as Monroe. This is a fascinating interview with Redmayne, his charm and wit are addictive and his reading of the memoir is amusing, heart-felt and believable. | 10/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

'Acting is a lovely club to belong to' | Sir Derek Jacobi talks to BookD about his love of audiobooks, the theatre and film. His forceful, commanding stage presence is like no other which may explain why one of the greatest actors of the 20th Century gave him his first job back in 1967. This is genuinely one of the most fascinating interviews BookD had the pleasure to record, and was recorded in the middle of Jacobi's sell out performances in Londons West end playing none other than King Lear. | 10/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

This podcast illustrates that artists posess many cross disciplinary skills and how these talents are nurtured and exposed for all to appreciate. The highlight of Gareth Malone's Career!! Part 1 | In this 2 parter of BookD, we talk to Gareth Malone about his new book entitled appropriately 'Music for the People'. More inappropriately, no matter how many people say "your hair rocks" or alternatively and rather, cutting to the chase screaming, "MARRY ME, I'LL LEAVE MY HUSBAND!!!" or even "Oooh look Doreen, it's that lovely choir boy off the telly", Gareth has audiences of all ages falling in love with his passion, enthusiasm and has managed to ease us all into the genre that is classical music. | 5/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanDavid Starkey at the London Book Fair 2011 | David Starkey, one of the world's leading television historians and authors talks to BookD minutes before his introductory launch and talk about his app 'Kings and Queens' which was given on the final day at this years London Book Fair. David discusses the idea of modern technology and how innovative thinking in publishing changes the role of the author entirely especially when regarding his particular writing ethic. In his own words when describing this app "it actually shows in a very clear way, the chronology of history in a very simple timeline". Students who haven't studied history chronologically will love this, as will the passionate folk for such a vast subject as it contextualises what you want to know. It marks a new era for historical detail which isn't in the shape of a book for the shelf, a folder full of notes or a drab lecture series given by stiffs in tweed. | 5/7/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitNo pastel jacket required! | In this episode of 'BookD' we talk to Fern Britton about her debut novel and her expectations of author life, especially, when writing for such a competitive book genre. Some alternative modern romantics include David Levithan, author of 'The Lover's Dictionary' and why he thinks meeting online conjurs up similarities to the age old forgotten act of penmenship during the letter writing era to a potential lover. Mr Darcy, Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens and Tony Parsons are also thrown into the mix for this particular episode where the colour pink, men called Brad and cheesy one-liners are strictly forbidden! | 5/5/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

What Richard E Grant can't do! Part 2 | This is the hilarious part two to the Richard E Grant podcast where we get to talk to the author of the Conqueror series. Conn is responsible for all the hefty, blood thirsty historical fiction and catapults us all back to the dynasty of Genghis Khan ruler of the Mongol Empire. He also touches on the incredible relationships of great leaders and how interesting it is to realise the demise of these great individuals in such tragic ways. In the first part to this podcast we spoke with Richard E Grant about what it was like to read the book and as he describes it as 'a book where literally everyone is killed off, it’s an extraordinary story!’ We hope you enjoy the last part to this podcast where Conn talks to one of his editors Keira Godfrey.
