Battle Stations In A Dead Calm | BusinessWeek columnists Jack & Suzy Welch say that organizational transformations, especially the brave-new-world kind required by global competition, almost never happen unless people really feel the fear factor in their bones. Survival is a mighty motivator. Without an impending crisis, people love the status quo! A bureaucracy can feel like a warm bath. People never want to get out. And they certainly have no desire to jump into the icy water of global competition. And icy it will be, at least at first, because competitive organizations must be flat, fast, and transparent. Informal, candid communication is a must. So, too, is a mindset that has people constantly seeking best practices inside and outside the company | 7/30/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Smarter They Are... | BW columnists Jack & Suzy Welch say that it's human nature to feel fearful that a "superior" employee could make you look inferior, and perhaps slow down your career progress. But in reality, the exact opposite usually occurs. The reason is that leaders are generally not judged on their personal output. What would be the point of evaluating them like individual contributors? Rather, most leaders are judged on how well they've hired, coached, and motivated their people, individually and collectively -- all of which shows up in the results | 7/16/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

So Many CEOs Get This Wrong | Because human resources, unfortunately, often operates as a cloak-and-dagger society or a health-and-happiness sideshow. Those are extremes, of course, but if there is anything BusinessWeek columnists, Jack & Suzy Welch have learned over the past five years of traveling and talking to business groups, it is that HR rarely functions as it should. That's an outrage, made only more frustrating by the fact that most leaders aren't scrambling to fix it | 7/9/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Danger Of Doing Nothing | Change requires leaders to overcome all sorts of human dynamics, like inertia, tradition, and head-in-the-sand hoping that things will get better, say BW columnists Jack and Suzy Welch. But strategic moments require courage, or at least a lack of sentimentality, which is rare. It is in these moments that the best leaders find a mirror and ask themselves the defining question that the late, great Peter Drucker posed nearly 40 years ago: "If you weren't already in your business, would you enter it today?" If the answer was no, Drucker said, you need to face a second tough question: "What are you going to do about it?" Every leader should heed his advice and, if need be, follow it through to its conclusion -- whether it is to fix, sell, or close the business | 7/2/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Real Verdict on Business | The conviction of former Enron CEOs Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling on May 25th made front-page news all around the world. BW columnists Jack and Suzy Welch say the whole awful story is a tragedy, but that that Enron-like behavior is the rare exception. Most businesses play by the rules, and the rules work. The Welches say, however, that society cant afford to allow a small group of companies led by Enron to rewrite reality and make businesspeople cover in shame and lose their courage. Vive L' Europe -- Just Not Yet | Most of Europe has been treading water for the past 10 years, barely keeping its head above the waves of change. But BW columnists Jack and Suzy Welch argue that Europe is simply too large and established an economy to collapse, and there are signs of emerging discontent with the status quo. The final reason that Old Europe will survive is New Europe's pro-business governments, which are creating a whole new generation of entrepreneurs who see opportunity everywhere and boundaries nowhere | 5/28/06 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Whining Game | How do you change a culture in which employees complain incessantly about everything from politics to being under-appreciated? BW columnists Jack and Suzy Welch argue that managers need to understand that they're running companies, not country clubs or counseling services. Your No. 1 priority is to win in the marketplace so that you can continue to grow and provide opportunities for your people. Welch and management excellence go together everytime!
Being someone that has always viewed Mr. Welch as a symbol of management excellence, his pod casts further solidify my view. The pod casts are some of the best in my library straight to point and every minute filled with powerful information. Great job!!
Very good insight
Much better than I anticipated. I really thought I'd unsubscribe after one podcast, but instead I downloaded 3 more.
Outstanding, concise, lively, and insightful
This is a model podcast. Jack and Suzy answer two questions during each podcast. They do not ramble but get right to the point. They answer questions graciously and with great wisdom. They do not shy away from controversy. The questions come from their BusinessWeek column. There is sometimes a 15 second commercial but the podcast is well worth it. This is MBA insight in the most palatable way possible. Go back and listen to all of them - you will not be disappointed and the insights are timeless. I have worked in a business and a large church and I find the advice here applicable to both contexts. The only negative thing I would say is that the recording is not crystal clear like a studio because they are doing the recording over an internet phone (as of February 15, 2007).
