CleanOctober 9, 2011 - Living In The In-Between | 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 This Sunday we remember. We remember what Christ did for us a little over 2,000 years ago. We will celebrate the greatest demonstration of love the world has ever known as Jesus’ body was broken and His blood was shed for us. As we remember, we embrace the notion that God commands us to live each day in light of the cross and in light of His return. Join us as we explore living in the in-between and as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Scripture Memory Verse 1 Cor. 11:26 “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” Scripture • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 • John 3:16 • 1 John 2:3-4 • James 2:17 Questions Does remembering the cross make a difference in my life? Does Christ’s pending return make a difference in my life? Am I acting like I have been somewhere before and looking forward to where I am going? CleanOctober 2, 2011 - Remarkable Faith In An Unexpected Place | Matthew 15:21-28: This is a troubling text. Jesus’ response to the woman seeking healing for her daughter is quite unexpected and his hand-picked disciples are urging him to “Send her away.” But she doesn’t go away, she comes closer. And to this outsider, a woman and a Canaanite, he asserts, “Woman you have great faith.” What great truth has she discovered that we need to embrace? Why is it so difficult? Scripture Memory Verse Matt 15:28a “Then Jesus answered, ‘Woman, you have great faith!” Scripture • Matthew 15:21-28 Questions How do you respond when Jesus is silent or when he doesn’t answer your requests as you desire? Why did the woman put up with such behavior? What does it mean to be a person of great faith? Do you have great faith? | 1/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanSeptember 25, 2011 - Do You Want To Get Well? | I have never visited someone who is sick and asked them: “Do you want to get well?” I think such a question would not be well received. Yet, Jesus asks this very question to a man who has been an invalid for 38 years. Why would Jesus ask such a question? Join us on Sunday as we explore this intriguing text. Scripture Memory Verse John 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” Scripture • John 5:1-15 Questions What does it mean to be well? What changes are associated with being well? Are you well? Do you want to get well? | 1/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanSeptember 11, 2011 - A Solemn Day | September 11, 2001 was a dark day in American history. It was a day of distress, perplexity, and death. It seemed as though light would never return. But in fact, the light never left. What does the light represent? What is our responsibility concerning the light? What does our vision have to say about this? Scripture Memory Verse John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Scripture • John 8:12 • Philemon 4:12-13 • John 14:6 • John 3:16 • Acts 1:8 Questions What does the light represent? What are we to do with the light? Where are we to take the light? | 1/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanSeptember 4, 2011 - Who Am I? | It is a good question: who is my neighbor? It is a mandatory question if our desire is to draw boundaries around who we will love as our self and who we will not. It seems that the Parable of the Good Samaritan shortchanges us a bit. We are told relatively little about the man who needs mercy. Is he a Jew or a Gentile? Is he a criminal or law-abiding? Is he religious or is he luke-warm? Is he wealthy or is he poor? How are we to decide if he is our “neighbor?” Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • Luke 10:25-37 Scripture Memory Verse Luke 10:33 “But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.” | 1/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanAugust 28, 2011 - Go and Make Disciples | Our new church logo includes this verbiage: “centered on Christ, embraced by His vision.” Great words! Great question: Are we? One component of our vision is: Growing God’s Kingdom. This Sunday Chris and Donna Keeter will join us for worship to describe the great work God is doing in Honduras. He is growing His kingdom! We have the opportunity to join Him. Will these remain just words or will they become the way of life for Central Baptist Church: “centered on Christ, embraced by His vision?” Scripture Memory Verse Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” | 1/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanAugust 21, 2011 - The Power of Vision | Much has been written about vision. As I apply vision to the church setting I offer this explanation of vision: intentionally seeking to discern God’s dream for our congregation. God has always had a vision for His people. God has a vision for Central Baptist Church. Join us as we seek to more fully embrace His vision for us. Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • Jeremiah 29:11 • Ephesians 2:10 • Romans 8:31 Scripture Memory Verse Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Questions For Reflection Does God have a history of providing a vision for His people? Does God have the power to accomplish His vision? Does God have a vision for Central Baptist Church? CleanAugust 7, 2011 - Risky Business | Large companies spend millions of dollars to help them manage and mitigate risk. Many universities offer a major in risk management. Investors embrace the concept of the risk/return tradeoff (the higher the risk of an investment the higher the expected return). Can we ever be risk free in business or with our investments? No. But shouldn’t followers of Jesus expect to be exempt from risk? Surely following Jesus isn’t “Risky Business.” Join us Sunday as we explore Jesus’ view on risk! Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • Matthew 25:14-30 Scripture Memory Verse Matthew 25:14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” Questions For Reflection What did the first two men do in order to share in their master’s happiness? What was the failure of the third man? How did the master respond to the third man’s excuses? Does Jesus really expect us to be risk-takers and dare-devils on His behalf? Do you have excuses for failing to use all God has entrusted to you? What are they? How would Jesus respond to your excuses? | 8/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJuly 31, 2011 - Investing Wisely | What is the best investment you have ever made? Perhaps you purchased Microsoft, or Apple, or Google stock when they were first offered to the public. Most would contend that any of these would have been a wise investment, because you would be rich! On Sunday we will see that Jesus has something to say about investing wisely. No matter how much we have to invest, we should be focused on “Investing Wisely.” Join us and learn the most important investment strategy, one that will result in you being rich — toward God! Here’s the scripture for the sermon: • Luke 12:13-21 • Psalm 24:1-2 Scripture Memory Verse Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” | 8/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJuly 17, 2011 - Living the God Life | Are you living the good life? How much more will it take for you to finally be able to have all you want? A wealthy man was asked: “how much money must you have to be happy?” His response: “just a little more!” A man who owned a lot of property was asked: “how much land must you own to be happy?” His response: “I want to own all the land that adjoins my property!” Perhaps living the good life should not be our goal! Here’s the scripture for the podcast: • Luke 19:1-10 • Luke 18:24-25 Scripture Memory Verse Luke 19:6 “So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.” | 7/19/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJuly 10, 2011 - The Great Fear | What are you afraid of? Perhaps you suffer from at least one of these phobias: Ranidaphobia – fear of frogs Pathophobia – fear of disease Ochlophobia – fear of crowds Suriphobia – fear of mice Phobophobia – fear of phobias I suspect every one of us is afraid of something. Some phobias can be life-changing while others are quite harmless. This Sunday the sermon is centered on a phobia that I hope each one of us has – the fear of not living the life God wants us to live. If you are trying to live a Godly life you are in a great struggle. Paul describes our struggle as a fight and a race. It surely is! What can you do to enhance your victory? Join us on Sunday! Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • 2 Timothy 4:7 • Phillipans 3:10 • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 • Ephesians 2:10 Here are the questions for Sunday: Are you actively engaged in the struggle to live the life God wants you to live? What are you doing to enhance your victory? What can you do to enhance your victory? CleanJune 26, 2011 - An Action Oriented Faith | Pat Tillman’s dream was to play in the National Football League. Since he was undersized for the positions he played, there was little chance for him to succeed in professional football. But amazingly, he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and broke the franchise record for tackles in a single season. But after a few years, Pat put his football career on hold and became a U.S. Army Ranger. People asked why? And the question intensified when Pat was killed in service. Why was Pat Tillman willing to leave professional football and serve his country? Why are many Christians willing to leave their comfortable lives to serve our Lord? In the book of James, God tells us something very important about service. It is a message we need to hear and respond to. Why? It’s a good question. Join us Sunday as we explore God’s answer. Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • James 1:22 • James 2:14-26 • Matthew 25:34-40 • Ephesians 2:8-9 • Luke 23:39-43 Here’s the question for Sunday: Are you action oriented when it comes to your faith? Are you willing to support our new ministries? Scripture Memory Verse James 1:22 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” | 6/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJune 12, 2011 - Prayer: Yes to God | This week I have prayed for: Vacation Bible School, our worship service on Sunday, church members, church members’ family, safe travel, my family, friends, upcoming weddings, air conditioning, flat tire repair, my computer to be healed from a virus (the reason I am late with the blog!), etc. Each of these requests is important, but I have to guard myself from limiting prayer to simply giving God a wish list of needs and desires. Prayer is much more! Richard Foster asserts “prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us.” Why do you pray? What do you pray for? How often do you pray? Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • Mark 1:35 • Luke 11:1-4 (Matt 6:9-13) • Acts 1:12-14 • 1 Thessalonians 5:16 • 2 Thessalonians 1:11 • Philemon 1:4 Here’s the question for Sunday: Are you being transformed by prayer? Scripture Memory Verse Luke 11:1 “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’” | 6/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJune 19, 2011 - The Best Father's Day Gift Ever! | I am blessed to still have my father. Over the years it has become more and more difficult to find a father’s day gift that he will enjoy. He has everything he needs and over the years has accumulated most everything he wants. I have no idea what I will give him this year. On Sunday we will read about the best Father’s Day gift ever. It is a gift that will change one’s life now and for all eternity. It is a gift the Father gives – to His children. It is a gift only one Father is able to give, but he gives to all who will accept. Don’t miss worshipping Him. He is worthy! Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • John 6:24-36 Here’s the question for Sunday: Have you accepted the great gift He offers? Scripture Memory Verse John 6:35: “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.’” | 6/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJune 5, 2010 - Being Prepared | Most all children have heard the story of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah in Sunday School numerous times. If the names don’t sound familiar read Daniel 1:7. Their story is a great story of the power of God to save his faithful servants. But their story also illustrates the necessity of being prepared to be faithful when there is a lot at stake. For our graduates who will be entering new settings and making new friends it is of paramount importance that they are prepared to remain faithful to God even if they will be ridiculed, ostracized, and abandoned. The application of this passage, however, applies to all of us as we encounter circumstances that will test our faithfulness. Please join us Sunday morning as we recognize and honor our graduates and we hear what God says about “Being Prepared.” Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • Daniel1:7 • Daniel 3:8-18 Here’s the question for Sunday: Are you prepared to be faithful to the God you serve if being faithful costs you everything? Scripture Memory Verse Daniel 3:18: “But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” | 6/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanMay 29, 2011 - A Great Revival | Have you heard the story of what happened at Angola prison a few years ago? I guess nothing should surprise us about what happened in a place once known as “The bloodiest prison in the south.” But what happened in this place filled with the worst of criminals surprised most everyone. Something similar happened nearly 2600 years ago when Josiah was king of God’s people. It was during a time when God’s people had lost their identity and they were worshipping the gods of their neighbors. Here’s the scripture for Sunday: • 2 Kings 23:4-7 • 2 Kings 23:21-23 • 2 Kings 22:8-13 • 2 Kings 22:1-3 • Deuteronomy 10:12-13 Are you in need of a great revival in your life? Where do you begin? The same place as did the Israelites and the prisoners at Angola. God’s Word will change your life! Join us Sunday! Scripture Memory Verse Deuteronomy 10:12 “And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” | 6/4/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanMay 22, 2011 - The Greatest Story Ever Told | God expects a response from Central Baptist Church. We believe our response is to: • Know God’s Word • Show God’s Love • Grow God’s Kingdom Before we can seriously respond as a congregation we must understand that God also expects a response from each of us individually. On Sunday we will identify the first individual response: Studying God’s Word. We will review what God has to say about His Word and why we are to devote ourselves to an intentional, ongoing, structured study of His Word. The primary Scripture passage for Sunday is Matt7:24-27. Please also read the following passages: • Leviticus 18:1-5 • Psalm 119:9-16 • Psalm 119:105 • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 • James 1:22 Do you think God wants us to know and do what He says? Why is studying His Word so important? Scripture Memory Verse Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” | 5/28/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanMay 15, 2011 - A Life of Response | We believe that God’s vision for Central Baptist Church is to know God’s word, show God’s love, and grow God’s kingdom. How do we know? We know because we intentionally set out to discern His vision. Now, we must intentionally focus on embracing His vision. But before we begin prayerfully and systematically implementing new programs and activities, each of us must prepare individually for God’s great work. As you begin this great journey you must answer this question: How much of my time, energy, and money am I willing to give? How far out of my comfort level am I willing to venture? What is my level of commitment going to be? Please read Luke 14:25-35. For the past several weeks our sermons have centered on the theme that Jesus expects a response from His followers. In the text for Sunday, Jesus removes any doubt about the response He desires. The crowds traveling with Jesus no doubt admired Jesus for His ability to heal the sick, restore life to the dead, cast out demons, and tell great stories. It is important to note that Jesus does not demand a response from admirers, but He is quite clear about what He demands from His disciples (followers). Are you an admirer or a disciple? Scripture Memory Verse Luke 14:33 “In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.” | 5/21/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanMay 8, 2011 - What's A Woman to Do? | Some interesting tidbits about mothers: The youngest mother was a girl in Peru. She was five years and seven months old when she gave birth to a six and one-half pound baby boy. She had a rare medical condition that allowed her to conceive at such an early age. The oldest new mother was a woman in India who was 70 years old when she gave birth to a baby girl. The woman had received fertility treatments. A woman in Russia is believed to have given birth to the most children. Between 1725 and 1765 she gave birth to 69 children including 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. I found the above facts on the internet, so I don’t know if they’re true. This Sunday we will study an amazing story about a special woman. I believe her story is true because I found it in the Bible. Please read Judges Chapter four. Is our world today similar to the world as it was over a thousand years ago? What makes Deborah very special? Scripture Memory Verse Judges 4:8 “Barak said to her, ‘If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.’” | 5/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanMay 1, 2011 - "Do You Know Who I Am?" | “Do you know who I am?” Has anyone ever posed this question to you? Perhaps they did if you failed to show the proper respect or if you did not respond to someone important in an appropriate way. King David is generally considered to be Israel’s greatest king. Yet David, like us, was not perfect. He made some really bad decisions and suffered the consequences. On Sunday, our focus will be on 2 Samuel 24. Please read this chapter. Why do you think God was angry with David? Why did Araunah offer to give the wealthy king his threshing floor, oxen, and wood for the sacrifice? Why was David so adamant about paying? Is God saying to you, “Do you know who I am?” Are you showing God the proper respect and responding appropriately or are you giving God that which costs you nothing? Scripture Memory Verse 2 Samuel 24:24b: ”No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” | 5/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanApril 17, 2011 - The Invitation | What’s the most memorable trip you have ever taken? Were there any good surprises along the way? Were there any bad surprises along the way? On Sunday we will look at Jesus’ journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. Often referred to as Luke’s “travel narrative,” we discover that there were many surprises along the way. The title of the sermon is “The Invitation.” Please read Luke 9:51-62 and also Luke 9:46. Why do you think Jesus did not destroy the Samaritans when they did not welcome him? After all, there had been over 700 years of animosity and hatred between Jews and Samaritans! This would have been a great time for Jesus to rid the world of Samaritans! Do you happen to remember any other texts where Jesus mentions Samaria or Samaritans? Take a peek at Luke 10:25-37and Acts 1:8. Surprised? Can you draw any conclusions about the purpose of this journey to Jerusalem? If we are surprised about Jesus’ invitation to the Samaritans, what about Jesus’ expectations of those who accept his invitation? Luke 9:57-62 is a difficult text for us. We often try to rationalize what Jesus says to make it more applicable, palatable to us. What is Jesus really saying here?\ Scripture Memory Verse: Luke 9:57 “As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’” | 4/30/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanApril 24, 2011 - Under The Influence | I think we say way too much about the crucifixion and spend way too little time contemplating our response. Our text for Easter is Mark 15:16-41. Mark’s narrative of the execution of Jesus Christ is remarkably brief. One commentator notes, “The text says little, but evokes much.” Please read the text slowly and repeatedly. Note the humiliation and physical pain. Spend time pondering, meditating, and ruminating. What does the text evoke deep within your soul? What is your response to God being ridiculed, tortured, and nailed to a cross on your behalf? Scripture Memory Verse Mark 15:37 “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.” (NIV) | 4/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
