My guess is that Christians normally think Jesus was a cheater when it came to temptation. Most Christians seem to believe that Jesus never gave into temptation because He is God. While its true that He was and is fully God, Jesus resisted temptation totally out of His humanity as He was filled with the Spirit. Jesus could not have sinned because He's God, but Jesus did not sin because He was the perfectly obedient man. Jesus gave us incredible insight on how to resist and fight against temptation. Jesus did not need to be baptized to identity with us, but we need to be baptized to identify with Him. Jesus was baptized to fulfill the faults of the nation of Israel, and to identify with His coming death and resurrection. The way we are baptized communicates our belief in God’s judgment for sin, Jesus’ death for forgiveness, and Jesus’ resurrection for eternal life. We don’t get baptized to be saved, but we get baptized because we are saved. But for those who refuse to be baptized, they may be showing that they aren’t truly saved. Malachi is The Final Countdown to the coming of Jesus. We at CBSM have had such an amazing time studying the Old Testament together. Its crazy to hear how our students thought about the Old Testament before the study, how they feel about it now, what their favorite sermon or series was, and how they summarize what they believe the Old Testament is all about. Malachi is a perfect and yet awkward ending to the OT. First, it is the perfect ending. Malachi lays out 6 major themes that all summarize the OT perfectly. Second, it is an awkward ending. In the days of Malachi, Israel thought God was finally bringing His kingdom to them and through them. They were back in the Promise Land, they had rebuild the temple, and the sacrifices were rolling again. But God wasn't done! The priests were still corrupt. Religion was still dirty. And sin was still rampant. This book is incredible with how God lays out everything one more time what He had been teaching them and what was to come. Here is the final installment of our CBSM study on Angels, Satan, and Demons. We finished it all off with a Q & A. Many students texted in their questions. Many wrote them down on paper. And there were even small groups that turned in lists of questions to be asked. It was a really fun night to where I really had to be on my toes. There were questions I had no clue about an answer. There were questions that I had to look up answers. And every question got a biblical basis. Here are some of the questions we got that I took a shot at for an answer: 1. Can Satan read our thoughts? 2. If God is all-knowing, then why did He create Satan in the first place…and allow him to become evil? 3. Do people who go to hell become demons? 4. Can demons materialize and take on human form? 5. Are there such things as guardian angels? If so, is there one for every Christian? 6. Can a Christian be demon possessed? 7. Why did one-third of angels follow Satan instead of doing what they were created to do (worship Jesus)? 8. How was God made? 9. If sin did not enter the world until the fall of Satan, then how did Satan fall if there was no sin? 10. Nahum was one of the toughest books that I’ve ever had to preach. First of all, it was really tough to understand initially. And then once I understood the book, it was crazy difficult to try to put into words for the teens. Nahum might sound like a pansy name, but the book is extremely intense. Its themes are God’s judgment, wrath, jealousy, and vengeance on sin and sinners. God says things in this one book that will make you wonder if you’re reading the Bible and if you’re actually believing in the right God. It had a little "We are Marshall" flare to it. Here's why I believe God wanted it. Every fall, as all the students are going back to school, more teens than ever decide to give the church one more chance. We want to be well aware of that, so we normally use that Wednesday night to tell those students who we are and what we're all about (JESUS!). I'm amazed at all that God is doing! Over 3 years ago now we had about 60 students in all. Over 3 years ago we had around 90. Over two years ago we had about 140. Last January we topped about about 170. God has given us so much growth that we've had to go to 2 CBSM services (middle and high school separated). So this week, with both services combined, we had just barely under 200 teenagers! It was an absolute honor to talk about who are as CBSM (Capshaw. Baptist. Student. Ministry). Youth pastors, I would highly recommend that every August and January you take a week or two to recast your vision as a student ministry, strategically speak to your guests and visitors, and watch God get them on board for the glory of His Kingdom. Jonah knew that Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria…who was about to attack the northern kingdom of Israel and send them into exile. How could God forgive His enemies?! Country music sings about it constantly! “Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die. Lord, I want to go to heaven, but I don’t want to go tonight.” “If heaven ain’t a lot like Dixie, I don’t want to go.” “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to go now.” “When I get to where I’m going…” One of the latest movies on eternity was called the “Hereafter” produced by Clint Eastwood and starred by Matt Damon. Have our Christian views of eternity been tainted by entertainment’s attempts to describe it? Absolutely! What if I told you that absolutely no one will end up in heaven forever? We have called eternity “heaven” for so long that our view of eternity has become unbiblical. NT Wright rightly said, “Don’t worry, heaven won’t be the end of the world.” I agree with him fully on that because Revelation 21 and 22 says that Christians will live ON the New Earth which will be in the New Heavens. “Heaven” and the dwelling place of God will come down to Earth rather than us going up to Heaven for all eternity. Eternity will be spent in a very physical world, and not some immaterial, spiritual heavenly realm. His challenge was to accept God’s rebuke in your life so that you can be reconciled to relationship with Him and be restored. God took His people through that process in the times of Jeremiah, and He is seeking to do the same in our lives. Those who will not accept rebuke in their lives, show an unforgiving spirit and probably an unconverted heart. The tornadoes hit us hard two weeks ago on April 27th. The area was devastated as many lost their homes and some lost their lives. God’s timing is just absolutely incredible, and His love to speak into our lives through His Word is astounding.
