TV tough guy Robert Conrad aims his fists at talk radio! | He’s the original TV tough guy. He’s a formidable ladies man and unstoppable flirt. And now in his late 70s – 70s! – Robert Conrad still doesn’t know the meaning of slow down and smell the flowers. You can LISTEN to this interview with actor and syndicated radio host ROBERT CONRAD, host of PM SHOW WITH ROBERT CONRAD, by clicking the audio player above! He’s in his third year as a weekend host on the CRN Digital Talk network – a podcaster, for cryin’ out loud! And you know what? He’s damned entertaining. There may be snow on the roof, but there is still fire in the heart. Conrad, who became a household name when he starred in Hawaiian Eye and Wild Wild West, is at home in front of a microphone, sounding like a guy who has been doing radio all of his life. I first heard about Conrad’s now vocation when he was interviewed on Stitcher’s “Meet The Talkers” with Matty Staudt. He was hysterically funny and blunt, gamely answering any and all questions. Now it’s my turn. | 2/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Actress Erica Durance embodies Wonder Woman! | If you thought Erica Durance was too hot to handle during seven years of playing reporter Lois Lane on TV’s long-running “Smallville,” wait till you get a load of her tonight kicking bad guy butt dressed as “Wonder Woman” on the latest episode of “Harry’s Law” on NBC at 9 p.m. This particular Wonder Woman costume is suspiciously similar to the one designed for David E. Kelley’s failed NBC TV pilot from last year. And, no disrespect to Adrianne Palicki, the actress who wore the suit then, but Durance will make hearts flutter wildly when you see her in it. You can LISTEN to this interview with actress ERICA DURANCE, guest star on NBC’s HARRY’S LAW, by clicking the audio player above! Kelley – who produces “Harry’s Law” and is best known as the creator of “Boston Legal,” The Practice” and “Ally McBeal” – obviously knows opportunity when he sees it. I have no idea how the plot of Durance’s guest starring role opposite Kathy Bates turns out, but it’s delightful to know she’s doing the opposite of putting distance between herself and the DC Universe of superheroes. | 2/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Guitarist Adam Falcon flies in to play live! | In my head, the introduction to today’s show with blues/rock/jazz guitarist Adam Falcon goes something like this: Blah, blah, blah – including live performances by Adam – blah, blah, blah! You can LISTEN to this interview with guitarist ADAM FALCON by clicking the audio player above! And then out loud I would say: The first time Adam Falcon was on the show was a lot of fun. I love his music, his guitar style and his general approach to life. He recently got in touch to say he’d be coming to Florida – Miami, to be exact, and he offered to play a few songs live for us to help promote his shows on January 13 and 14 as part of Art Deco Weekend 2012. How could I say no to that? | 2/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Russell Hornsby takes Grimm pleasure in NBC hit! | How crazy is the NBC drama “Grimm,” which is loosely adapted from the classic fairytales? So many ancient beasts, crazies and creepies running around, viewers need a scorecard to keep track! You can LISTEN to this interview with actor RUSSELL HORNSBY, star of NBC’s GRIMM, by clicking the audio player above! RUSSELL HORNSBY audio excerpt: “The creativity in the names – a lot of consonants, you know what I mean? And they’re all original names from the mind of (show co-creator) Jim Kouf who, I think, sneezes and comes up with them.” As Portland homicide detective Hank Griffin, Russell Hornsby is one of the good guys. He and his partner, Detective Nick Burkhardt, are doing their level best to keep peace in Oregon between humanity and its roster of mythological, sometimes pathological creatures. The fact that Burkhardt himself is desceded from a long line of criminal profilers is a plus for them. As for Hornsby, you might recognize him as a cop from “Lincoln Heights” or his season on HBO’s “In Treatment.” He also starred opposite Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in “Fences.” If you hesitated to try this show out because you thought it would never last, think again: “Grimm” is performing well in the ratings in its 9 p.m. Friday timeslot and was recently picked up for a full season. Scott Krinsky’s parting gift from NBC’s Chuck: Sanity! | If you don’t think most TV shows are very good at character development and growth these days, I’d encourage you to take a look at NBC’s “Chuck” as it winds down its five year run with two final episodes, tonight, Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m. and next week, January 20. For a show that has lived under threat of cancellation almost from day one, “Chuck” has nonetheless evolved its overall storyline and the lives of each of its players. Chuck Bartowski, for example, is no longer an accidental spy with a supercomputer in his brain; he’s the real thing, doing the job without high tech enhancements. You can LISTEN to this interview with actor SCOTT KRINSKY, co-star of NBC’s CHUCK, by clicking the audio player above! And what about second banana Jeff Barnes? After years of being drug-addled, sex-crazed and just plain creepy, we learned that his best friend Lester Patel made him this way by pumping carbon monoxide fumes into his van! Turns out Jeff is a somewhat regular guy – with pretty good powers of deduction. Last week, after five years, he put together a series of clues and deduced that there was a spy ring operating beneath the Buy More. Imagine that! My suspicion is that restoring Jeff to normality was the show’s producers handing actor Scott Krinsky a parting gift. They had to know it might tough for him landing future roles with such a convincing portrayal of a loser and, I believe, gave his character back some semblence of normalcy to let future casting directors see Krinsky in a more employable light. But rather than guess, I’ll ask him. (By the way, this is Scott’s second appearance on Mr. Media. He was last here promoting his appearance as guest host at the Acme Comedy Theater.) | 2/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Capt. Kirk singing? And dancing? Oh, my! Trek The Musical! | One of the worst memories I have of my father always comes back to this: He came home from work one day in the early 1970s, saw me watching a “Star Trek” rerun, and shouted at me to shut it off. “You’ve watched that a hundred times!” he thundered. “Get out of here!” It’s many years later and, of late, my own kid has been watching hour after hour of those very same reruns. I couldn’t be happier. For her, it’s research: she’s in the cast of Trek The Musical, an original new stage parody of the old Gene Roddenberry TV show that will have its world debut at the Studio@620, 620 1st Avenue South in St. Petersburg, Florida on February 2 and continue through Feb. 5. Call727-895-6620 to order tickets. You can LISTEN to this interview with LAUREN FIELD and GAETANO RODRIGUEZ, co-creators of TREK THE MUSICAL, by clicking the audio player above! If you can’t wait, there will also be a cold reading of the production at American Stage on Tuesday, January 17 @ 7 p.m. American Stage is located in downtown St. Petersburg at 333 3rd Avenue North. Call 727-823-PLAY to reserve your The show, produced by Accio Actors, was co-created by Lauren Field and Gaetano Rodriguez, and written by Lauren with music and lyrics by Gaetano . I haven’t seen it yet, but my daughter Rachel plays Ensign Chekov, so you know Mr. Media will be there, front and center. Joining me today will be Lauren, Gaetano and several members of the Trek The Musical cast to preview the show. | 2/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ZENTROPOLIS EPISODE #10 ” Celebrity Cause Marketing ” with Jay B. Ziskrout | Brands spend billions trying to make people like them. But annoying people (with ads) won’t win any popularity contests. And plastering logos all over the things people love (e.g., content, events, charitable giving) is unmeasurable and, do people even care who’s sponsoring the show? A new socially responsible company Dympol has come up with something called "Charitable Checkout" which links brands to their network of influential people and organizations, and their followers. When fans give to a celebrity-endorsed cause, they get brand-sponsored coupons and publicly thanked by their heroes on social networks. Charitable Checkout can live in e-commerce, on social networks, on ordinary websites, or in mobile apps for event-based activation. This week we are in conversation with Jay B. Ziskrout,Founder & CEO of Dympol. Prior to founding Dympol, Jay served as COO of music industry publisher, event producer and brand marketer, The CMJ Network, launched (Netherlands based) Epitaph Records Europe as Managing Director, and was Vice President of Album Promotion for Arista Records/BMG. In 1999, he founded LatinoVision.com, one of the first sites to sell digital music. As a musician, Jay was the founding drummer of such bands as Bad Religion and Electric Peace. He is also a general aviation pilot and holds a B.S. in Business Administration. | 1/31/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Michael Uslan | I’ve never produced a Batman movie, but other than that slight difference between us, I completely related to producer Michael Uslan’s autobiography, The Boy Who Loved Batman. It probably starts with us both being Jersey boys smitten by four-color dreams as young boys, buying the latest comics at a neighborhood drugstore or Mom & Pop convenience store. Then it was our similar devotion to organizing our friends according to their interest in arguing about who would win a fight, DC’s Batman or Marvel’s Daredevil, Superman or Batman, Deadman or, uh, never mind. And there were the creative professionals who made appearances in our teens; for him it was comic book writer Otto Binder; for me, hard-boiled detective novelist Michael Avallone. Also: Uslan made a pilgrimage to DC Comics and spent a day with vice president Sol Harrison; my friends and I went to Marvel, met a very young artist named George Perez and followed him home, where we watched him draw. (Harrison later hired Uslan; Perez and I are friends on Facebook but I can’t swear he remembers our momentous meetup in 1976.) There were other, smaller things that tickled me in The Boy Who Loved Batman: • Uslan wrote many of the DC adaptations of The Shadow, which I loved as a teen and, many years later, it was one of the few comics I kept and that I introduced to my wife and she enjoyed at least as much I did. • And just days after my teenage daughter finished reading Beowulf for her English Honors class and I remembered a comic book version in the 1970s, I discovered in his memoir that Uslan conceived and wrote that, too! • It also turns out we have a mutual acquaintance, Steve Huntington. Huntington and Uslan went to grade school and high school together back in Jersey; I covered smooth jazz radio program director Huntington as a media writer in the Tampa Bay area in the 1980s. I could go on and on without even getting close to the meat of the book: how Uslan obsessed over the need for a full-length movie of The Dark Knight to redeem Batman after the campy ‘60s TV series nearly ruined the character forever. Not only did Uslan acquire the rights and bring every modern version of the Caped Crusader to the big screen, from Michael Keaton to Christian Bale, he also was responsible for TV and film versions of Swamp Thing among other characters. His book does leave out a couple of his movies he’d probably rather forget, though, including Catwoman and Frank Miller’s The Spirit. (Sorry, Michael.) And one more thing: at the top of his IMDB page is this curiosity: Untitled Batman Reboot, 2015. Hmm… Michael Uslan The Boy Who Loved Batman Website • The Uslan Company Website • Order The Boy Who Loved Batman MICHAEL USLAN audio excerpt: “I think Michael Keaton was essential to that first movie taking hold and setting the standard for what would come in the entire genre over the next 20-plus years. Christian Bale totally nails Bruce Wayne for every single generation of Batman fans… Christian Bale makes you believe in Bruce Wayne and therefore, Batman, completely.” | 12/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Danny Fingeroth and Roy Thomas | Every Marvel Comics fan knows the names Roy Thomas and Danny Fingeroth, curators of a new book, The Stan Lee Universe. Both have been editors at Marvel Comics during its long and storied history and both have gone on to establish their credentials as comics industry historian. And both will be joining us in a moment. Fingeroth, now a senior VP of education of the Museum of Comic and Comic Art in New York, was a guest on Mr. Media back in 2008 promoting his book, Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero. As for Thomas, the editor of Alter Ego magazine, I interviewed him for my biography, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life, at the behest of Stan Lee himself. Lee had told me about his exchanges with Eisner, two of which were quite eye-opening. In one, he literally solicited the creator of The Spirit and a well-respected publishing success himself, to take The Man’s seat as publisher of Marvel Comics. (Eisner declined.) In the other, he vaguely recalled proposing a humor magazine and asked Eisner to flesh it out. Lee said to talk to Thomas for all the details, which I did. For most comics fans, those too little-told stories of the history of the Marvel Comics Universe were delightful “What If…?” moments. Now Thomas and Fingeroth have come together on a project, The Stan Lee Universe, which collects rare memorabilia, letters and interviews with one of the greatest creators – and characters – in the known universe. It’s a really fun read and I heartily recommend it to you. Roy Thomas Alter Ego Magazine Website • Danny Fingeroth Website • Facebook • Twitter • Order The Stan Lee Universe ROY THOMAS audio excerpt: “Stan really worked almost every way you could image during the Marvel Era — except maybe a full script! He did everything from a detailed plot for the early Fantastic Four to a little conversation over the phone for five to 10 minutes to telling somebody, ‘Why don’t we make Doctor Doom the villain?’” | 12/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

That’s because we know way down inside us about what’s good and what’s not. Lamorne Morris | Lamorne Morris may just be the luck, luck, luckiest actor in Hollywood. When the studios were casting for pilots last spring, he was not among the actors chosen for Fox’s “New Girl,” starring Zooey Deschanel. Then a funny thing happened to one of the guys who was, Damon Wayans, Jr. His other show, “Happy Endings,” got picked up for a full season over on ABC after an abbreviated spring run. Lucky Damon. “Happy Endings” became a certifiable success this fall. But even luck, luck, luckier Lamorne Morris, who stepped in as the third male roommate sharing quarters with adorable nerd Zooey Deschanel. Because “New Girl” is the biggest breakout comedy of the season and it only gets better week to week. (You’d know that if you had seen the difference from episode one, which introduced the situation to this comedy, and the Thanksgiving episode, which smoked it out of one apartment and into the next one. Poor dead neighbor. But I digress.) Anyway, Morris, whose previous credits include a run with the Upright Citizens Brigade, has a good story to tell. At least I hope he does. | 11/28/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Drew Friedman | Drew Friedman is BETTER than Picasso! So says Howard Stern, and who is Mr. Media to argue with the King of All Media? Drew is the king of modern caricaturists. His work has been featured on almost every major American magazine, from The New York Times and MAD to Entertainment Weekly and Field & Stream. In recent years, he has turned much of his attention capturing a generation of sometimes unheralded entertainers: Old Jewish Comedians. In fact, it’s become virtually a brand for Drew, starting with his first collection, Old Jewish Comedians, then his second, More Old Jewish Comedians, and now his third, Even More Old Jewish Comedians. Who knew there were so many Old Jewish Comedians? Is there any chance he’s making some of these people up as he goes? Who knows? Who cares – it’s funny and the artwork is impeccable. Drew has been on Mr. Media before and he recently connected me with his father, legendary humorist and novelist Bruce Jay Friedman. And the family act continues next April with a reprint of Drew’s first book of comics from the pages of Raw magazine – co-authored with his brother, Josh Alan Friedman. Today we’re meeting in person at the TradeWinds Resort in beautiful St. Pete Beach, Florida, where Drew is the keynote speaker at the International Society of Caricature Artists annual convention. We’ll use that as an excuse to talk about craft. | 11/17/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Larry Keltto | Larry Keltto has worked from home for a long time. Being a writer and editor, that’s a pretty sweet arrangement. He gets to eat his own food from the refrigerator, take a break when it suits him, work late when projects demand something extra, and be a more involved dad to his daughters. That’s all on the plus side of the ledger. On the down side, working for yourself can be a lonely pursuit. You spend a lot of time alone in your own head, probably thinking through the challenges of the day and the economy a bit too much. And when the economy is particularly sucky, some self-employed entrepreneurs will be hit the hardest by it. But my friend Larry – and he has been my friend for about a decade now, is always the positive one. It’s part of his Minn-e-sot-a charm and a leading reason for his success. It also led him to believe there might be a business plan in connecting the very people whose choice of vocation tends to isolate and separate them from the herd. Larry started his website, The SolopreneurLife.com, believing that if the world’s self-employed entrepreneur came together to share their victories and woes, their challenges and innovations, the result would eventually uplift them all. He’s also collected many of their stories in an inspiring new ebook, The Solopreneur Life: 42 Sole-Business Owners Speak the Truth on Dreaming Big, Failing Forward and Calling Your Own Shots. Regular Mr. Media viewers and listeners will recognize at least one of the 42 – it’s me, your pal, Mr. Media. | 11/15/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Gangster Movie Book | The danger of writing the “Ultimate Book” of anything is if you wind up demonstrating that you ultimately don’t know much about anything. That didn’t turn out to be an issue for George Anastasia and Glen Macnow, co-authors of The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies. Their list of the 100 greatest gangster films of all time includes just enough of the films you’d expect to see and enough surprises to convince the skeptics among us that they did their research. The book is packed with detail and affirmation of why any one of the one-hundred deserves its place on the list, from The Godfather films at No. 1 & 2 through The Freshman at No. 100. (Yes, it’s truly Marlon Brando’s world and if we keep accepting his offer we can’t refuse, he’ll keep letting us live in it.) They know no one will agree with the entire list; they want us to debate the merits of certain choices – like Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway, for example. Of course, with a thoroughly gangsta name like Anastasia, my guest today knows it has to be good, right? | 11/9/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Dennis Farina | Dennis Farina is an impact guy. When this prominent actor hits the screen, no matter what the role, he owns it. I don’t know what he’s like in real life, but in TV and films alike, he’s always bigger than life. And that’s what makes this Law & Order veteran’s work in The Last Rites of Joe May so compelling: he’s small. Life has just beaten the small time hood up and down so many times late in life that while we see a Dennis Farina character who still projects confidence in himself, inwardly, he’s just about had enough. When he returns to his apartment after a lengthy hospitalization only to find a naked woman in his shower, things seem to be looking up. But when he finds out it’s no longer his apartment, it’s hers, well, welcome to The Last Rites of Joe May, indeed. Check out the trailer for The Last Rites of Joe May and you’ll see what I mean. You can see all of The Last Rites of Joe May from the comfort of your own home via Movies on. It is also available on iTunes, Amazon and Vudu and watch for its theatrical release in New York and elsewhere soon. And don’t miss Dennis Farina in the new HBO horse racing series, Luck, co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and Joan Allen, beginning in January 2012. | 10/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jackie Collins | The first time Jackie Collins was a guest on Mr. Media, I have to admit I was a little nervous. This is a novelist who has sold about 4 billion copies of her books and has been producing quality, popular work since I was in short pants. Would she hang up the minute the first dumbass remark came out of my mouth? And when I inevitably stumbled over the title of her then current book, Poor Little Bitch Girl, would she put me in my place with a withering glance so toxic I could feel it through the phone line? Nope. She was a doll. I remember finishing that interview and feeling like that was a keeper. Miss Collins was charming, effervescent and, for struggling and successful writers alike to hear, quite the inspiration. I’m quite eager to spend the next 30 minutes with her to hear about her new book, Goddess of Vengeance, which continues the adventures of Lucky Santangelo and her supporting cast. I’m also hopeful we’ll hear more about her craft and how the autobiography is coming. I might even ask what her actor sister Joan is up to this time. Or I might not. | 10/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Pete Williams | I live very close to Tampa Bay and every day brings at least two or three opportunities to experience it via Coffee Pot Bayou near downtown St. Petersburg. I can see a lot of wildlife if I periodically glance out to the beautiful blue waters of the bay – manatees, dolphins, sea birds of every kind, kayakers, canoe enthusiasts, pleasure boaters and lately, stand-up paddle boarders. The first dozen times I saw them out there, feet planted on what looks like a surfboard as the gentle paddle along, it looked like one of the nuttiest things I’d ever scene. Although, I have to admit, it’s a lot more inviting than parasailing! This is not a sport for me, but when I learned that my friend – and frequent Mr. Media guest – Pete Williams, had helped standup paddle board expert Brody Welte write a vook – an ebook with video – about the subject called Paddle Fit, I thought it would be fun to talk about it here. | 10/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

MR. MEDIA – AN INTERVIEW WITH RICHARD DOETSCH | I don't know why I put myself through this. It’s bad enough I read books by writers who are so much better than I am at storytelling. But then I punish myself a little more by interviewing them. Richard Doetsch is one of those guys. He’s so good at sucking me into his fast-paced adventure-slash-crime stories! But just when I think he’s finally written another just good enough story, there comes a turn, a twist, a gadget, an inside-out moment I didn’t see coming that makes me want to chuck my computer and flip burgers for a living. And yes, Half Past Dawn is another one of those. | 9/29/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
