CleanStories from Katrina | While visiting New Orleans in the spring of 2008, documentary filmmaker Patricia Federico became captivated by the Katrina stories still being told on the street by the locals who survived the storm. After overcoming a catastrophic disaster, loss of life, and the separation of their families, residents come front and center to give first-person accounts of what happened to them before, during and after the hurricane. They describe the struggles still facing them as they try to rebuild what the levee breaches destroyed. CleanNative American Spirituality and the Environment | Derek Hitchcock studied Ecology at UC Berkeley and has worked on environmental projects around the world. In the past few years he has returned to Northern California where he is working to restore one of the world’s most beautiful natural resources--the Yuba River. Beyond approaching the restoration of this river in a scientific way, Derek and colleagues at the South Yuba River Citizen’s League (SYRCL, pronounced “circle”) are working with the local Native American Tribe, the Tsi-Akim Maidu, to approach the ecological crisis in a more foundational way by focusing on healing; healing the relationship between the cultures and the obviously fractured relationship between humans and the rest of the natural world. SYRCL and the Tsi-Akim Maidu are inviting people to the Yuba River to experience its beauty and to witness the magic of one of nature’s most amazing phenomena—the life cycle of the Salmon. By forming this unlikely relationship with the native tribes, the salmon and the river itself, Derek is a part of discovered new ways for us to heal our planet that extend far beyond the banks of the Yuba River. CleanThe Prodigal Yogi-Part 2 | Although yoga was developed in ancient India and has been practiced largely by Hindus and Buddhists, it is not a religion in and of itself. In fact it is a mystical path that can be practiced by people of any faith. Many westerners have noted that the principles of yoga are very similar to the teachings of Jesus, and many Christians have come to discover that rather than replace their faith, practicing yoga deeply enhances their beliefs. In this Darren explores the similarities between the life and teachings of Jesus and yoga and examines just how complementary these two paths can be and how reading the Gospels in the light of Eastern philosophy can add new dimensions to our understanding of Jesus and his message of compassion, forgiveness and charity. CleanThe Silly String Mom | Marcell Shriver, a New Jersey resident, is your average woman. She goes to church, is a mother and has lived a fairly quiet life. Her story is very inspiring, however. Her son, Todd, is a soldier in Iraq and to help keep him and others in the "hot zone" safe, she has come up with a unique idea--Silly String. Silly String, those cans of spray string that you may remember from childhood, can be used by soldiers in the field to detect trip wire bombs. She has started a drive with the help of her husband, her church and thousands of people all around the United States to send as much of Silly String as she can to Iraq. Her story is touching and beautiful, and it reminds us all that the smallest gift can make the biggest difference. Resources Marcell is looking for the names of soldiers in Iraq to whom she can send care packages of Silly String. Please email her if you know someone. This highly controversial film makes some wild assertions that fly in the face of common beliefs about that tragic day. The filmmakers use live news footage, reports from mainstream news sources, and interviews with so-called experts to suggest that: •A missile, not a commercial jet, hit the Pentagon. •Non-commercial planes hit the World Trade Center towers. •Explosives planted inside the trade center were what brought down the towers rather than burning jet fuel. •The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania did not really crash, but rather landed in Ohio. •Many of the 19 hijackers are still alive. •Members of the Bush Administration, not Al Qaida and Osama bin Laden were behind the attacks. Of course this is in stark contrast to the findings of the 9/11 commission report and, according to mainstream media reporting, is completely false. That said, I love a good conspiracy theory as much as Oliver Stone, so with me in this podcast is Jason Bermas, one of the producers of Loose Change, to discuss some of the controversial claims in the film. CleanRoe v Wade Under Attack | On March 6, 2006 South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signed into a law a bill that would ban all abortions in his state with the only exception being the life of the mother. This law directly conflicts with the 1973 Supreme Court Ruling known as Roe v Wade in which the high court said that states could not make abortion illegal in most circumstances. Even those who support the new South Dakota law don't believe it will go into effect any time soon. Rather, they are hoping it will be challenged legally and will make its way to the Supreme Court where they hope the now more conservative court will reverse the 1973 ruling. According to a recent Fox News/ Opinion Dynamics poll 59% of Americans oppose this law and only 35% support it. Here to help us determine the future of a woman's right to choose is Tim Mooney. He is a political lawyer from Washington DC and the host of the two very successful podcasts, Supreme Court Watch and Capital Caucus. Yoga!! Yoga!! Yoga!!
This podcast is great for yoga students and practitioners! Many of the guests that Darren interviews are yoga teachers, and students with amazing healing stories. It is not asana practice, but gets to the deeper levels of living your yoga. Many of the interviews focus on yoga philosophy and spirituality. Darren himself is very authentic and genuine in every podcast. (I just wish the description up above highlighted YOGA a little more boldly. I found him through another yoga podcast.) Please keep up the great work, Darren!
