DaveCast #28: QR Codes – the who, what, why and where | This week on the #Davecast, it is just me, but that does not mean that it is any less informative. Well, a few weeks ago, I skyped it up with Harrison Painter and Ricky Lee Potts about QR Codes, but somewhere along the line it was deleted and lost to the digital world. I did my best to recreate the talk and post some of the highlight here. QR Code: the Who, What, Why and Where Who? Created QR Codes – a subsidiary of the Toyata Corp called Denso in 1994. They have never exercised their patent rights on them. What? They are called quick response codes, QR for short. They are a 2 dimensional barcode, a barcode on steroids. QR Codes can store vast amounts of data and trigger a response out of the scanning device most likely a cell phone like launch a video, v-card application, a website or launch a mp3. Why? QR Codes can really be used in all aspects of your business from inventory to marketing. We mostly will talk marketing here on the #Davecast. Here are some statistics from June 2011 * 14 million scans * 58% from home * 39% from retail stores * 53% were men ages 18 to 34 Among the battle of the sexes it is * Males - 60.5% * Female-= 39.5% Where are they using QR Codes? * Home – 57% * Work – 22% * Outside – 20% * Retail – 17% * Supermarket – 17% * Restaurant -5% A grocery store in Korea set up a virtual store in a subway station and it allowed people to avoid going to the grocery store and shop online so much easier. As far as I can tell using a QR Code is free, you can them online, and if you use the google url shortner you can even track it for free in analytics. Where? Almost anywhere from billboards (USAF in South Bend), Real Estate Agents on using them on sale signs, tracking of shipments, and last year when I attended a Verizon event they scanned the back of the name badge to check me in. QR Mistakes: * No mobile landing page * No data signal where the QR code is displayed * Not testing the code * To fancy – t-shirts, reflective surfaces and alike * No value, not giving me a good reason to scan the code. What Content to offer? * Video or video tour of a home * V-card * Mobile enabled sites or blogs * Contests * Coupons * Free mp3 Where you can use them * TV, magazine, newspaper (some believe that qr codes make some print advertising relevant) * Product packaging * Storefronts * Business Cards and Brochures * Posters * Websites and email Tips & To Do’s: * Test and retest * Use a URL shortner (use google and QR on the back to track) * Make them easy to scan, avoid reflective surfaces and at least 1x1inch Please leave any questions or comments down below. #DaveCast 27: Steve Dahl – Radio Legend & Podcast Innovator | Ha, this week. I got to talk to one of my favorite people in the world. Yes, there is a fair amount of ass kissing in this podcast, but when you get a chance to talk to Steve Dahl (http://dahl.com). I mean radio legend Steve Dahl. You must pay homage to all of the things that he has done in 35 plus years of radio and podcasting. From Disco Demolition (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page3/story?page=behrens/040809) to playing the audio of his first born to having his vasectomy done live on the air. He was one of the first radio personalities to have his own website; he has had his finger on the pulse of his many fan when it comes to social media from being on Twitter and Facebook very early on. He owns all of his past shows, and now includes them as a part of the monthly subscription package on Saturday’s. In recent weeks, he has added Kevin Mathews and James VonOsdol. Kevin does a twice weekly show and James will be doing a weekly or bi-weekly show. (I think there is room for me)hint hint… Steve and I talk about his being an early adopter from setting up a tv and vcr for his kids to watch, to his website, I remember him being on AOL in the early days. He was offering his shows almost as soon as he could as a free download on his site. I was working in South Bend at the time and I would miss part of his show. So, I would often listen to it a day later or catch the first half when I got home. Chicago radio in recent years had really gone downhill. I remember up through my mid-30’s I hated not being able to ear Chicago radio. Now, if you go to any American city it all sounds the same like going to McDonald’s they all taste the same. In McD that is good in radio that kind of sucks. What led to the downfall of Chicago radio? The people meter…Steve personally went from #1 in 25 to 54 age range to 29th. The people reader listened to what you were listening to, if you were in an elevator. Yeah, it registered that. Steve thinks and I agree there is not much that can be done to fix it. I mean for crying out loud Johnny B. is on WGN. As more and more stations continue to act like they are a TV station and continually “tease” what is coming next and never really do it. We will have to learn to live with drivel like and Eric and Kathy, and I am afraid that there is not a whole that can be done. Well, there is you can subscribe to the Steve Dahl Show (http://new.dahl.com/subscribe/), it is a mere $9.95 a month. As, I said while I was talking to Steve, he is as funny as he has ever been, and as his network grows. It is only going to get better. #DaveCast 26 – Ranting, Raving, Tools and I am back in Real Estate | This is not your daddy’s podcast. This week I got a little bit of rant in me. I talk about domain names, and the importance of owning your own name. I find it funny when I see or hear about real estate agents that do not own their own domain name. I know of several local companies both real estate and others that incorporate, but do not buy their name or were never able to get their own domain. I picked up that we are using for a local training blog. Well, within a day or so of picking it up on auction at GoDaddy. I got an email requesting to buy the domain for $250. I thought nothing of it, but I wanted to see if they would match my counter. So, I shot them over $10,000 counter. I really did not think they would match it, but what the heck. I had nothing to lose. Yeah, they did not go that high, but they did counter my counter with $1000. I did not accept it, but I speculated how they came to lose this 10 or 12 year old domain. They had an outside person buy the domain and when it came time to renew it they never renewed. Maybe there was an invoice not paid. Whatever it was, they lost a aged domain and I picked one up for $20 bucks. I offer a tool of the week. I am a huge fan of gmail. I do not use outlook or any other mail client preferring to run all the email through gmail. So, I rely on some tools like rapportive and boomerang. Rapportive is a tool that lets you see what social networks the sender (http://rapportive.com/)is on. Here you see I got an email from @CoachLee (http://twitter.com/coachlee). Boomerang allows me to send an email and if I do not hear back, it will resend the email (http://www.boomeranggmail.com/). Plus, it will allow me to send an email later. I really like that option as I work a little late at night, and I do not want them to know that I am up that later and/or since that a lot of people have smart phones. I do not want to wake them up with an email. Speaking of smartphones, I just read that over half the people used a mobile device for shopping over the Christmas. Does your business have a mobile stategy? Here is where I go on the rant I am getting back into real estate. I explain why I am getting back into real estate. I think that some agents local or not do not do enough to market their homes. They simply drop a sign in the yard and walk away, hoping and waiting for that phone call. I am going to say, I am sorry now, but this has irritated me for more than a few years and then to see, but we will see if I am going to succeed or whether or not I will crash and burn. #DaveCast 25: CoWork Spaces and Live Event Coverage | #DaveCast 25: CoWork Spaces and Live Event Coverage This week on the #DaveCast I skyped it up with @AndreaCook (http://about.me/andreacook), owner of The Midas Center a co-work space in Plymouth, IN. Yes, Plymouth Indiana, a small town in north central Indiana of about 12,000 people, and they have a vibrant business solution of professional office space that could meet the needs of many of us who work remotely. What is CoWork Space? It is an emerging trend that is catching on more and more everyday across the United States and the globe in urban and rural locations. A cowork space (https://www.facebook.com/CoworkSpace) brings together likeminded professionals to a shared work space environment allowing for flexibility and cost-savings for an office while gaining the benefit of synergy from working side by side in a collaborative professional community. It's perfect for small businesses and solopreneurs who are looking to stretch their marketing budgets and benefit from the social interactions found in a professional community Some cowork spaces offer an open floor-plan with no walls. If you want improve communications with in your office, open up your area, tear down your walls and your people will start learning and thriving from each other. The Midas Center offers a wide variety of amenities from: * Coffee bar * Message center * Gig board * Super fast WiFi * Whiteboards * Green (environmentally friendly) environment Live Event Coverage? Another one of Andrea’s business offerings is live event coverage which covers trade shows or conferences. She tweets, live blogs in a way that brings additional attention to you, your company and your brand. I have seen examples of her work and how it increases of traffic and attention paid to a conference or event that it might not have gotten otherwise. It frees up the event coordinator to focus on the event rather than jumping around on Twitter or other social platforms. It also gives them an extra set of eyes to help avoid any issues that may arise, but most of all the marketing efforts before, during and after are unbeatable. For more information on Andrea and her Live Event Coverage (http://www.eventcorrespondent.com/) company visit her site. #DaveCast 24: Why I Podcast? | Why I Podcast? I think I have wrote and written and am re-writing this post. I am actually typing this one out and I have not done it this way in a long time.(http://davewoodson.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/vintage-microphone-th1.jpg) Why do I podcast? Most of you have heard me talk about Steve Dahl. I went to college to be the next Steve Dahl. Well, I guess you all can figure out that did not happen. But, I have always wanted to entertain. I, even, did a radio show for free for with one partner for over a year and then another show for nearly as long. I started my first podcast which was about mortgages and that did not last all that long. No one really cares about mortgages… I chose to do a podcast for several reasons 1. I want to share my knowledge I have an opinion and I really want to share it. I am pretty well versed and know more than the average bear in video marketing, SEO, local SEO, Google products, mobile applications, SMS marketing and marketing in general. 2. I want to make more money This is really a two parter – I would like to make more money doing the podcast and that is why I got a sponsor. SimpleNexus (http://simplenexus.com) was the first to do become a sponsor and it is an affiliate relationship, and if you sign up then you will get a 10% discount by the using the code “Daver”. I think it is a good way to be recognized as a speaker and be invited to speak at events from real estate and mortgage to marketing and even as a keynote. That sums it up that is why I podcast. I love listening to podcasts. They are a narrowcast. I can just about listen to anything that I want. I can just about find it on iTunes. I have even heard a sex show done in the voice of Jimmy Stewart. I can listen to a podcast anywhere and anytime. In the car, the gym, working around the house, mowing the yard, etc…the list is endless. The downside seems to be is laughing out loud in the grocery store. I called up Coach Lee (http://processspecialist.com/increasesales/)again. I tossed it out on twitter and facebook and she was the one that responded first. We talked about how little planning do and I think I suffered from this on this podcast today. But, I had heard recently that the United States ranks eleventh in the American Dream. Needless to say, I was shocked to say the least, ten other countries rank higher that we do in the American Dream. How the heck did that happen? I am still out to make mine happen Dave | 1/22/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

#DaveCast 23: with Robby Slaughter – email and personal productivity with some succeeding by failing | This week, I got the chance to Skype in with Robby Slaughter (@robbyslaughter (http://twitter.com/robbyslaughter)) of Slaughter Development and the author of “Failure: the Secret to Success”. I met Robby several years ago when we presented at one of the RE BarCamps in Indianapolis. Mr. Robby Slaughter I have always enjoyed talking to Robby, and I do not for the life of me know why it took me so long to get him on the #DaveCast. Well, I finally got him on the show, and with his busy schedule this is no easy feat. Robby is an expert at productivity, and I have been having some issues with my email. Every day, I seem to be caught up in a virtual landslide of email. I know really what I need to do, but I always used my email wrong. I chose to keep it open like a giant library. However, I am willing to bet we all deal with email overload and it keeps up from being truly productive. Here are some of the tips that Robby shared with me on Email Productivity. First, we really need to break down elements of email - 1. Clients (gmail, outlook and so on) 2. Server and systems (where the emails are stored) 3. Spam filtering Second, don’t bow to expectations – We train the people that email us as to what to expect. When someone emails us and we grab our phone or jump on the computer and bang out an immediate response. Then their expectations are that – we jump like we are Pavlov’s dog. We need to break that habit, and we do that by not allowing ourselves to be tied to rapid email response, Third, go offline – We can stem the flow of email by using setting that are in about every major email client. It will stem the flow, the wave of email that fills our boxes every day. I don’t think you can do this one with first doing number two. So, keep that in mind. You will need to listen to the #DaveCast to lean what 5-word email that cost U.S. taxpayers $10 million dollars. Yes, one 5- word email cost $10 million dollars in bandwidth, time and computer downtime. We, also, took on the idea of “Medium Change”. Where you will email someone and they will text you back or call you. I am seeing this more and more in the age of Facebook. I am not a fan of Facebook email! Personal Productivity: I wish I was more productive. I suffer from junk overload. I have a messy desk, a messy office and I need to learn to toss things away or recycle them. Robby, again, shared with me some tip to make us all more productive. 1. Chunking – do less and do it longer When I write my blogs, I will hand write my blogs out by hand to avoid the electronic pull of the computer. When I start writing, I will generally write more than one post and the post will be longer than if I had gone in and typed them to begin with. 2. Pen & Paper – a place to write anything, just for you to read No more relying on your memory to send someone a link or where they tell you to go eat and you will not offend anyone when you grab your phone to add some notes about your conversation. 3. Plenty of room in the future – We are all busy today, tomorrow or next week, but we are not busy 3 or 4 months down the road. When whatever project you set forth in the future, you can either keep it, ignore it and push it out once again. Failure: the Key to Success: We should not fear failure. You should not go out tempt failure, but so much can be learned by failing. Do not pretend that it never happened, do not hide it. Think of all of the famous people that failed, and their failures are what made them to the extraordinary things that made us come to know them. Abraham Lincoln – * lost almost every election he was in * filed bankruptcy * became the 16th president and known as one of the greatest American Presidents Michael Jordan – * was cut from his high school basketball team as a sophomore * missed more game winning shots than he made * won 6 NBA championships & is part-owner of an NBA team | 1/13/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

DaveCast #22: My Goals for 2012 | I am doing this episode of the #DaveCast with a bit of egg on my face. I had originally done a great episode of with Harrison Painter and Ricky Lee Potts on QR Codes, but some where in the sands of time and recesses of my hard drive. I lost the episode, So, in an effort to keep my goal for 2012 and do a weekly show. I scrambled Wednesday night through together this goals episode at the last minute. I am sure you will find it informative. I wanted to share with you all some of my Goals and Plan I have for 2012 and beyond. I am also adding on to my 11/1/11 #90Dave weight goals. 2011 was a real butt kicker for me, it seemed that every time I took two step forwards I fell back one. “Frustrating” would be the word of the year for me. I hate when a sports team uses the term “rebuilding year”. Well, that is what 2011 felt like to me. A couple of days ago, I commented on Facebook that I never felt more prepared for any year than 2012. You know how muck favors the prepared mind. I am going to be so lucky in 2012. I have a more formal announcement coming in a week or so after I have my real estate license renewed and I am back in the MLS very early in 2012. Yes, you read that right I did say I am getting back into real estate, but this time as a real estate agent. If you are not looking over your shoulder you will be soon. 90 Day Challenge #90Dave started back on 11/1/11 I tipped the scales at a fat 292lbs and two months later I getting compliments all over the place at 269lbs. I lost 23lbs in 2 months and those months had Thanksgiving and Holiday parties galore. Two of the hardest months of the year to lose weight. Also, to top it all off the Girl was home and the Mom made some of the best fudge she has ever made. DaveWoodson.com I spoke more than a few times in 2011 from Chicago to Cincinnati to Indianapolis and South Bend on a variety of subjects from Local Social Marketing, Video Marketing and Social Media Marketing. I was even invited to be a panelist in New York at Inman Real Estate Connect, one of the biggest real estate conventions in the United States. So, in 2012, I set some big public speaking goals. Goal Speak 8 to 10 times. The Podcast Doing the #DaveCast has truly been an incredible experience for me. I have had some killer guests on the show in the last quarter of 2011 and I am building on that success for a great 2012. I have some great plans and guests lined up and the information that I hope to provide will knock your socks off. The problem with these goals for 2012 is that they just may be too easy Goal * weekly show of 45 to 60 minutes * 1 to 2 guests a month * get the show into the Top 10 on iTunes * I want to interview a couple of the guys I look up to like Todd Duncan and Andy Andrews I know the 3rd and 4th goal will not be easy, but not all of your goals should be easy. The trick is that they should be attainable and realistically set high and they are all that. I am going to add a little wrinkle to the weekly podcast. I am going to add a bi-monthly, free and educational webinar with little to no selling like you do other sites. Goal * do 6 to 9 webinars * free with little to no selling * offer a lot of great information getUnoticed I am keeping this one pretty close to the chest. In 2011, I had to do a major shift in strategy and to add insult to injury. I doubt I will ever take on another business partner without some sort of serious super air tight partner agreement not to mention a lot of pondering and prayer. Currently, I have 10 active, traffic getting and lead generating local websites in several Indiana cities. Goal * add 10 more site (3/12) * add 1 employee (8/12) Blatant plug here for getUnoticed, (http://getUnoticed.com) to learn more about the Local Lead Generation (http://getUnoticed.com)and other services offered visit getUnoticed today or call us at (219)872-8000. | 1/8/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

#davecast 20: Squiggly’s Race to the Ark with Tim Davis | Once again for the 2ndweek in a row, we have a repeat offender on the #davecast, and it was none other than Mr. Tim Davis. He is an author, business coach and certified speaker/trainer (http://www.timdavisonline.com/) with John Maxwell. Since, we last spoke with Tim. He finally got around to getting his much anticipated children’s book “Squiggly’s Race to the Ark (http://www.squigglyandfriends.com/)”. I am joking. Tim is one of the hardest working guys out there. He is a former mortgage broker and that is how I first came to learn about Tim and all the killer work he is doing. But, this time Tim and I talk about Squiggly and his journey to the ark and all the trials and tribulations he endures along the way. All the while, little Squiggly learn about his God-given talent. Tim has even been so gracious to offer a free gift assessment (http://www.squigglyandfriends.com/assessment.php) of your child’s gift. I am going to urge the Wife to do this soon for the Girl. I strongly urge you to head over there and take the assessment for your child after you listen to the latest episode of the #DaveCast (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/dave-woodson/id393817842). Tim shares with us all some great stories, experiences and triumphs from Squiggly and his own extensive business and coaching background. Perseverance is the key element to Squiggly getting to the ark before the rains start. Perseverance is one of the strengths, if not the main strength that any sales professional needs. When statistics show that most sales are made after the 6th call when most of salespeople will quit after the first or second call. It may be a tad late to buy Squiggly for Christmas, but to order it for your children, grandkids, or for your church head on over to Squiggly and Friends (http://www.squigglyandfriends.com/squigglys-race-to-the-ark) and order a few up. Personally, I cannot recommend Tim enough. If you are looking for business coach or a speaker for your business or next event, call Tim. Call Tim and I. Really, Tim has been a great friend and teacher over the years. Again, thank you for listening. A great Christmas gift for me would be a few positive reviews in iTunes. Have a Merry Christmas and stay tuned for next week when I do a little “best of…” of the last 20 shows. Yes, I cannot believe it either 20 shows. #DaveCast #19: No B******t Social Media with Erik Deckers | We have had one of the best weeks on the #DaveCast. I spoke with Erik Decker [@edeckers (https://twitter.com/#!/edeckers) ] on twitter and from ProBlogService (http://problogservice.com/) in Indy. (http://davewoodson.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/No-B******t-Social-Media-cover-tn-200x300.jpg)I talked to Erik earlier this year about his book that he co-wrote with Kyle Lacy called Branding Yourself (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789747278/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=davewoodson-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0789747278) * and when I heard he did it again with Jason Falls with No B******t Social Media (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0789748010/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=davewoodson-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0789748010)*. Well, I just had to have my first repeat guest. We talked about some of the recent blog posts he has written about sarcasm, and if you have ever read my blog. I will confess that writing is not a joy for me and that is why I do the podcast and video. It is not so much that I do not enjoy writing. I know I just have a hard time expressing myself with the written word and would rather do a podcast or a video. But here is the link to the sarcasm article that Erik wrote, which I have yet to master, but I say even if you use this. Will the average person know what the heck you are talking about ؟ I really hope that I am not ordering some fatwa with that symbol, but that is the new/old sarcasm punctuation (http://problogservice.com/2011/11/30/using-the-irony-mark-or-sarcasm-mark/). This book is more than a “how to”. It really dives into the “Why”, Strategy building and being proactive. Like it or not, people are talking about your business and it is up to you whether or not you want to cash in on the conversation or hope and pray that no one is talking negatively about you or your business. I want to thank all of the listeners to the #DaveCast. Please take a moment and subscribe via Itunes and leave me some feedback. Dave knows his stuff!
I have listened to all of Daves podcasts and highly recommend them. He is very colorful and teaches in a way that is easy for me to pickup (which is great since I am a slow learner). I can say without a doubt that a few of the "golden nuggets" or takeaways that I have received from his podcast have gone a long way for my business in a very short amount of time.
Great podcast!
Dave has a lot of insight and the guests he brings on are great! Highly recommended for anyone looking for search podcasts!
Great podcast.
Thanks for doing these. Please do more. Patiently waiting for the Steve Dahl interview.
