DVD Geeks – February 14, 2012 | Nuns! Chimps! Nazis! A little something for everyone this week on DVD Geeks! We've got two horror films on DVD this week, "The Dead" and "The Devil's Rock." The first is a slow-walker zombie apocalypse in Africa and the second is an intimate World War II drama with a demonic twist. Both flew under the radar, and we're glad to give them their due on tonight's show. In "Nude Nuns With Big Guns," a vigilante sister takes a corrupt Mexican parish into her own hands, making a habit of doling out justice. In "Project Nim," a group of unlikely researchers investigate the language capacity of chimpanzees by attempting to raise one as a human from birth. When Nim grew into adolescence and adulthood, his true nature put the research on hold. In this extraordinary documentary, the people closest to Nim share their stories and the emotional connections they had with him. Next up, Adult Swim skewers reality shows with the witness-relocation comedy "Delocated" and we'll see the latest offering from Asylum with their comedy "Celebrity Sex Tape." All that plus a slew of Honorable Mentions and more! | 2/14/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – January 24, 2012 | We couldn't wait. We tried and we tried, but the siren call of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" Blu-ray sampler was too strong. We just had to jump into the high-def goodness of this sampler pack of TNG "The Next Level" a week early and see what all the hype was about. We'll give you the inside scoop with a breakdown of all three episodes and our hearty recommendation to pick this one up! We'll also spend some time with a quirky indie (aren't they all?) called "Dirty Girl" in which the class s**t takes off with the class closet-case on a cross-country road-trip to find her biological father. It aims high with its blend of detailed characters and edgy humor, and we'll see if the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We'll also give the folks over at B-movie juggernaut The Asylum their due with their foray into the undead craze "Zombie Apocalypse." Can their low-budget effects and shoe-string budget craft a compelling zombie flick? Stay tuned... All that plus a big roundup of honorable mentions and more! | 1/24/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – December 21, 2011 | As we closer to the end of the year and the holiday gift-giving season is in full effect, we dig deep into three remarkable DVDs sure to make spirits bright. First up, Woody Allen continues his recent successes with the feel-good romantic fantasy of the year "Midnight in Paris." Owen Wilson stars as a writer at a crossroads in his life and seeks out the advice and escape of his newfound friends (Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dali, F. Scott Fitzgerald) who happen to be living their lives nearly 80 years ago. In "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," we get a modern prequel to one of the greatest science fiction franchises of all time. It's so good, it almost made us forget about that Tim Burton debacle from a few years back. James Franco stars as the scientist on the verge of a breakthrough for degenerative brain disease, but he may have kickstarted the apes' rapid rise along the evolutionary scale. Finally, the creative duo of Charles and Ray Eames re-defined art and design during the middle of the 20th century and their impact still holds sway today. In "Eames: The Architect and the Painter" we get a solid look at their creative output as well as a peek into their private lives. All of this plus a couple of special geek gift ideas, our weekly honorable mentions and much more! | 12/21/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – December 6, 2011 | Yes El Guapo! This week on DVD Geeks, we have a plethora of new DVD titles for your enjoyment! We'll start things off with the all-star, good-natured comedy "Our Idiot Brother" which puts Paul Rudd as a charmingly clueless hippie whose good intentions fall flat on his neurotic family. Next up, the horror anthology comes roaring back with the hilarious (and sometimes really gross) "Chillerama" which features four directors plying their craft to make us squirm in our seats. From "Wadzilla" and "I Was A Teenage Werebear" to "The Diary of Anne Frankenstein," there's a little something to shock, offend and amuse everyone. One of those "Chillerama" directors, Adam Rifkin, gets another shot with us in his provocative Showtime series "Look." The premise is interesting: strong together overlapping character stories in a quasi-reality style show captured entirely on surveillance cameras. Finally, we celebrate the return of Dusty, Ned and Lucky in the 1986 John Landis comedy "The Three Amigos." It's one of the best written comedies of the era, and we're pleased as a plethora of pinatas to have it in a solid home video release after 25 years. Join us for all those and more on tonight's show! | 12/6/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – November 14, 2011 | Robert Wagner was cool before he was cool. Before he was "Number 2" in the Austin Powers movies, and before he was Jonathan Hart in "Hart to Hart," he was Alexander Mundy in "It Takes a Thief." The series chronicles the exploits of a thief who is hired by the government to use his unique skills in special covert assignments. All three seasons of the late-'60s show are now delivered in a box set rife with features and some usable swag. We've also got a dark, adult take on a fairy tale with the French release "The Sleeping Beauty." This ain't your Disney classic... We also delve into a massive undertaking from A&E with their Blu-ray release "World War II in HD" which takes their all-color documentary series into the high-def realm. Narrated by Gary Sinise, this series breaks with usual documentary format and presents a very personal (and shockingly illustrated) look at the individual experience of war. Finally, we have a special treat from our Star Trek author friends David Mack, Kevin Dilmore and Dayton Ward. Each year at the Shore Leave convention, they and an assemblage of other writers/editors and other ne'er-do-wells take turns roasting a guest of honor for charity. This year, it was Robert Greenberger in the hot seat, and we have the hilarious results in this exclusive DVD only available from David Mack's website. | 11/15/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – November 8, 2011 | When the late Dennis Hopper teamed up with director David Lynch for "Blue Velvet," they created a dark, disturbing character in Frank Booth. We get to take a look back 25 years later at all the twists and mysteries in this film making its debut on Blu-ray. They've gone all out with vintage special features as well as an incredible (and well-restored) 50 minutes of lost footage that helps illuminate the characters in all new ways. We've also got the new comedy "The Change-Up" which puts a raunchy spin on the age-old premise of switching personalities - this time with Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds. With a strong supporting female cast (Olivia Wilde and Leslie Mann), we'll see if the movie can rise above its tired premise and gross-out pedigree. If comedy and twisted drama aren't your thing, we have an oddity for our show: a historical drama about the so-called "Scopes Monkey Trial" called "Alleged." But this movie isn't all that it seems - even with its killer cast of Colm Meaney, Brian Dennehy and Fred Thompson - we'll find out what's really going on under the surface. Also on Blu, we're celebrating the releases of Angelina Jolie's breakout role in "Gia" and the celebrity-fueled racing comedy "Cannonball Run" All those plus our weekly Honorable Mentions, a very special Geek Pick and more! | 11/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – November 1, 2011 | Tonight's episode is our post-Halloween roundup of the most interesting horror titles of the season. We kick things off with a trove of honorable mentions including some great Roger Corman schlock, a splatter fest from Herschell Gordon Lewis and a few TV delights. For featured picks, we'll look at a definitive Dracula documentary that seeks to separate fact from fiction, the long-awaited Blu-ray release of Lon Chaney's classic "Phantom of the Opera" (in its original 1925 cut and the more popular 1929 release) and a new kind of zombie film, the gritty British thriller "Devil's Playground." Since we have a love for the odd find, we dig deep into a new documentary about gore-master Herschell Gordon Lewis - he who brought us such classics as "The Gore Gore Girls," "Blood Feast" and "The Wizard of Gore." Finally, we see if the modern gore-fest "Wrong Turn 4" can be saved by its exceptional special features including a thorough commentary from the director, behind the scenes footage and the saga of making a movie in near blizzard conditions. All that plus a very special Geek Pick! | 11/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – October 25, 2011 | We are back! After much technical upheaval, the new DVD Geeks is on its way to full power once again. Enjoy this episode like a fine gumbo: full of disparate parts that make up a magnificent whole. We'll take on the geek battles of the ages in a Star Wars vs Star Trek smackdown when we cover "The People vs George Lucas" as well as William Shatners' own take on Trek with "The Captains." We go all retro with a gushing look at "JEM and the Holograms: The Truly Outrageous Complete Series" and then turn things a little scarier with a look at the latest installment in the "Scream" franchise. Finally, a couple of indie filmmakers find they Hollywood ambitions derailed by a foray into the world of (ahem) "adult" films. The results are depicted in the "pseudo-documentary" called "Adventures in Pornoland." Welcome back, and stick around for more DVD Geeks action coming your way! | 10/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks Interview – Phil Leirness | Well it's about time! A few weeks ago, we reviewed a captivating little indie gem called "The Truth Is Out There" featuring the talented team-up of Phil Leirness and Dean Haglund. The movie exposes all the strange (and maybe not-so-strange) conspiracy theories that people of all walks of life hold: aliens, pharmaceutical companies, 9/11, etc. and along the way host Haglund looks on with wide-eyed fascination to uncover this essentially human pursuit to make sense of the world around us. We sat down recently with director Phil Leirness who is not only one of the best-dressed men in Hollywood but also happens to be a DVD bonus features producer of some repute. We got to talk about the journey of making "The Truth Is Out There," the conspiracies, the featurettes and what is probably the greatest line in film history. Join us for this special (uncut extended director's edition!) interview, and be sure to pick up "The Truth Is Out There." | 10/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – September 20, 2011 | On tonight's show, we've got a couple of indie gems as well as a wildly popular comedy that breaks down gender barriers. "Cameraman" presents the life of Jack Cardiff, one of the great artists of the movie business. He has photographed some of the most glamorous stars in his 70+ year career and brought a philosophy of light & color to popular entertainment that influences directors and cinematographers today. In this compelling, personal story, Cardiff himself remembers some of his greatest triumphs in film and shares delightful personal stories about the personalities he encountered. In "Son of Morning," a young man is mistaken for the next Messiah, and his world quickly devolves into chaos. Heather Graham stars as an ambitious reporter out to make her own career with his story, and the strong supporting cast delves into to questions of celebrity, religion, media and psychosis. Finally, we'll see a movie unfairly labeled as "The Hangover" for women. In "Bridesmaids," Kristen Wiig and former SNL cast-member Maya Rudolph play best friends whose relationship is strained with an impending wedding brings out their worst sides. It's laugh-out-loud funny and tinged with kust enough sincerity. All that plus Geek Picks, honorable mentions and more! | 9/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – September 13, 2011 | It couldn't get more diverse on this week's DVD Geeks. On the one hand, we've got the film that is celebrated at possibly being the finest American achievement in the history of the medium. Warner Brothers presents the 70th anniversary edition of Orson Welles' masterpiece "Citizen Kane" in a three-disc set that reminds us about a time when the studio system could also support burgeoning "indie" talent. On the other hand, we've got a film so bad it was made on a dare - and it shows! The long-awaited "worst film ever made" as ridiculed by the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 gang, it's none other than "Manos: The Hands of Fate." We didn't think movies could actually be this bad, but the bar has now been sufficiently lowered. Rounding out the week, we've got a couple of sexy and gory TV entires from the Starz network: "Camelot" and "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena." The first series shows us a grittier version of the Arthurian legend while the second gives us the prequel story to the Starz breakout hit "Spartacus: Blood and Sand." All that plus a major roundup of honorable mentions including "Thor" and a little something coming out this week from George Lucas! | 9/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – September 6, 2011 | Mutants and mad-men are the dominant forces on this week's DVD Geeks! We'll get things started with a look at the disturbing independent serial-killer movie "A Horrible Way To Die" starring friend of the show A.J. Bowen. Next up, we'll see if the recent downward spiral of the X-Men franchise can be saved with the latest prequel "X-Men: First Class." The action thriller "Hanna" gives us a 13-year-old girl trained as an assassin by her spy father. She's dangerous and curious about the mystery surrounding her identity. "Spy Kids" it ain't. Finally, the gritty, tragic lives of northern Britons living in government housing is exposed in the jarring quasi-documentary "The Arbor." Based on the short life of playwright Andrea Dunbar, the film picks up where her plays left off and with the broken family she left behind. DVD Geeks – August 30, 2011 | On this week's DVD Geeks, we're looking at the final release of the classic Twilight Zone series on Blu-ray in a superlative collection from Image Entertainment. All of the classic, iconic episodes are here along with an incredible array of special features (old and new) that put TZ in historical context and cement its place in TV history as one of the best shows ever made. Next up, we'll take a retro journey to "Skateland" in this comin-of-age story set in a Texas suburb. When the town skating rink closes, the teens who work and play there are at a crossroads of what to do with their lives. It's funny, dramatic and goes out of its way to present authentic details of the period as a backdrop. Finally, Carrie Fisher left behind Princess Leia to find a real-life war with mental illness and drug dependence. In her one-woman show "Wishful Drinking," she spills her guts about all the skeletons in her famous family's closet. DVD Geeks – August 22, 2011 | This week’s show is all about murderers, mad men and mutant zombies. Rob G, co-creator of Icons of Fright and director of the documentary “The Psycho Legacy” joins us for a horror-themed episode. We kick off the show with the 5th season of Dexter, where Michael C. Hall and Julia Stiles come head to head for a tumultuous turn of events that echo themes of “I Spit on Your Grave.” Other highlights of the season include guest stars Peter Weller (Robocop) and Johnny Lee Miller (Dracula 2000) chewing scenery and playing against type. Next, we go back in time to the Wild West where cowboy bounty hunters meet zombies in “The Dead and the Damned.” In this shoot ‘em up movie, miners in Jamestown, California crack open a meteorite that exposes townsfolk to spores that turn them into flesh-eating mutants. Following that, we take a look at the prequel to Stevan Mena’s “Malevolence,” a twisted exploration of the psyche of a murderous mad man in “Bereavement.” Finally, we take a look at the ultimate mad man through the letters of adoring fans in “Dear Uncle Adolf: The Germans and Their Fuhrer.” In this documentary, we explore some of the 100,000 fan letters that were seized by Soviet forces when Germany was conquered in 1945. Preserved in a secret Russian archive, the letters are read by actors while archival footage is shown depicting his rise to power and his decline in popularity. They run the gamut from love letters to health tips. All these titles plus our weekly round up of honorable mentions and our very own Geek Picks. If you didn’t get your fill of genre DVDs, check out Rob G’s site Massive Hysteria, a pop culture round up filled with interviews and a nice horror slant. | 8/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – August 15, 2011 | On this week's episode, we spend a little quality time with Kim Catrall as a former adult film star in "Meet Monica Velour." It's a funny and often sweet, sensitive look at a boy coming of age while he seeks out the woman behind his adolescent fantasies. It's a brave and intriguing performance from Catrall in a movie that titillates and warms the heart. Next up, some of our favorite geeks on the planet - Simon Pegg and Nick Frost - encounter a smart-ass alient in "Paul." It's part E.T., part "Close Encounters and part road-trip comedy. Frost and Pegg make the most of their own "geek cred" and the technical achievement of Paul himself (voiced by Seth Rogen) elevate this movie to more than the sum of its parts. Finally, when our friends over at The Asylum aren't cranking out low-budget "mockbusters" like "Transmorphers" and the "Mega Shark" series, they sometimes try their hands at low-budget R-rated comedies. In "Barely Legal," the unlikely premise of three girls trying to lose their virginitiies at the same party plays out with the intended results of naked skin, a few laughs and a couple of gross-out moments. All that plus our round-up of the week's honorable mentions and more! | 8/15/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – August 1, 2011 | It's a dark, gritty take on vampires that makes "Twilight" look like a high-school prom. "Stake Land" presents a post-vampire America in which a few lone survivors fight their way to "New Eden" to start a new life. We've got the inside story on the movie and the DVD special features. Just to lighten the mood a little, we welcome back Kenny Powers for a second season of "Eastbound and Down" - the breakout HBO comedy that makes rednecks cool again. This season, Kenny is in Mexico looking for his career, his dignity and his missing father. This two-disc set is full of commentaries, missing and deleted scenes and a great gag reel. Finally, we have one of the most dramatic films of the year with David Schwimmer's directorial debut "Trust." It's the story of a suburban Chicago family that is thrown into turmoil when their 14-year-old daughter is sexually assaulted. It's disturbing and heart-wrenching, but it presents bravura performances from Clive Owen and newcomer Liana Liberato. All those plus the weekly round=up of honorable mentions and the triumphant return of Geek Picks! | 8/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks – July 26, 2011 | In "Source Code," a soldier from the front lines in Afghanistan finds himself on a secret mission to stop a domestic terror plot in Chicago. He leaps into the final eight-minutes of memories as experienced by one of the doomed passengers on a train that explodes. Directed by Duncan Jones, we'll see if this sci-fi psychological thriller holds up to Jones' previous work, "Moon." Next up, one of the weirdest puppets-meet-Hitler movies you'll ever see: "Jacboots On Whitehall." It's a WWII fantasy in the twisted vein of "Inglorious Basterds" with a healthy dose of British humor and some extraordinary animation work. Finally, "The Truth Is Out There" explores the weird world of conspiracy theories from all walks of life. Director Phil Leirness and his partner Dean Haglund (of "The X-Files" fame) traveled the world to hear about everything from aliens to 9/11 to "big pharma" and everything in between. It's a strange journey filled with strong opinion and may just inspire you to seek the "Truth" on your own. Yes, that's "The Shaft" with Naomi Watts and a haunted elevator, not Richard Roundtree kicking butt as "Shaft." | 7/18/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks Interview – Richard Patterson | As we're celebrating the release of Criterion's Blu-ray of Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator," DVD Geeks sat down with filmmaker Richard Patterson to talk about his film "The Gentleman Tramp." Released in 1976, "The Gentleman Tramp" features intimate at-home footage of Chaplin while telling his biography through film clips and narration from his friends. Patterson talks to us about "The Great Dictator" as a slice of Chaplin's career and about being one of the only people on Earth who "directed" the comic genius. | 5/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

DVD Geeks Interview – Matt Reeves | Director Matt Reeves may be best known for the monster epic "Cloverfield," but we sat down to talk about his recent remake of the Swedish horror film "Let the Right One In." In the American "Let Me In," Reeves explores the pain of adolescence through the guise of a vampire film. Reeves discusses the special techniques of working with child actors and the private meeting he had with one Steven Spielberg. He may even give us an update on "Cloverfield 2." Maybe. | 1/31/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
