"Woke Up Black" Director, Mary Morten and Ace on The Anna DeShawn Show - Feb 04,2011 | Arguably more than any other underrepresented group of Americans, African American youth reflect the challenges of inclusion and empowerment in the post-civil rights period. However, in contrast to the centrality of African American youth to the politics and policies of the country, their perspectives and voice have generally been absent from not only public policy debates, but also media, art and film projects. Increasingly, researchers and policy-makers have been content to detail and measure the behavior of young African Americans with little concern for their attitudes, ideas, wants and desires. This documentary will work to fill that void. For the last two years we have followed five youth and have witnessed family and social interactions, school and work life activities. The youth, ages 16-21, (three young women and two young men) represent a diversity of backgrounds and interests. A youth advisory panel has provided input on interview questions and screened footage throughout the production. Anna DeShawn brings you authentically-edgy conversation on current topics affecting women and QPOC's across the country. She is a social entrepreneur, culture critic, sports enthusiast, and community lover. Anna DeShawn is passionate about queer people of color, women, poverty, politics, and of course GOOD music. Special Guest: Hanifah Walidah on The Anna DeShawn Show-->For Women and QPOC's - Jan 21,2011 | Special Guest: Hanifah Walidah My name is Hanifah Walidah. I’m an artist, social activist and student of Ethnography and the Community of Music in the CUNY BA program. I have been creating and performing art across music, film and stage for near 20 years. Through the ups, downs and turn arounds of my career, I’ve learned a few things about music and its intimate and profound effects on people and our world. This blog and the 21 Weeks project explores and critiques the social and political gauntlet of musical culture, emphasizes and demystifies the creative process and aids in educating society around the resources found in their artists.. Bottom line, I am an advocate of deepening our understanding of the place and function of music in society. | 1/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

BEST Of the ANNA DESHAWN SHOW" C.c. Carter - Dec 24,2010 | POW-WOW was started by C.C. Carter over seven years ago. Having traveled on a book tour for over three years and being a part of the slam scene for over ten years, she found that there were little venues that felt non-threatening to her as a woman or as a woman of color. Whereas several spoken word venues that had mostly white patrons felt more accepting, within the African American community the word “bitch and homo” was constant vocabulary spoken by men and other women. She approached several local organizations within the community, but many felt that the community was not ready for a steady cultural event since the only real successes had been parties. She started an open mic where men and women would gather to read poetry but with a very “womanist” approach and respect. The poetry venue that started with less than twelve people in the audience now boasts over 75 – 100 people weekly and has hosted some of the elite poets from around the world. POW-WOW and its founder have received over 15 national awards and public recognition and is studied in women and gender studies classes around the country. Eve Ensler, the creator of V-DAY – A worldwide Public Awareness campaign to stop violence against women and girls, dubbed C.C. Carter as an International V****a Warrior and considers POW-WOW, Inc a necessary organization in the Chicagoland area for creating safe spaces for women artists and their allies. | 12/23/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Riding 12,000 Miles for HIV--From LA to NYC - Apr 02,2010 | Jamila K. Gaskins is an independent film producer based in Los Angeles who grew up in a household of the arts and activists. Her mother was a singer and her father, a well-known painter and ceramic artist. Through them, she learned that art could create and examine community, and the principles of individual and collective responsibility. In 2005, Jamila ran the Adidas Dublin marathon to raise money for AIDS Project Los Angeles and honor her uncle Tommy who is HIV+. For 6 months, she trained, fundraised and learned how HIV/AIDS affects women. It seemed incredible to her that the percentage of women who have HIV/AIDS had more than doubled in the last 20 years yet it's still perceived and discussed in the general public as a gay male disease. Once she learned that HIV infection is the leading cause of death for black women aged 25 - 34 years, the 5th leading cause of death among all women aged 35 - 44 years and the 6th leading cause of death among all women aged 25 - 34 years, she knew she had to do something. Not Invisible Anymore: Black LGBT in Media - Feb 19,2010 | Special Guests Faith Trimel & Ifa BumiDo you know any Black LBTQ women on the big screen? Can you name any in television, radio, music, art, etc.? Black LGBTQA people in media have been invisible. Invisible to producers, writers, and to you too. But times are changing and we're here to push progress forward. Special Guests: Faith Trimel and Ifa Bumi Real Talk. Real Change. Faith Trimel, is a multi-hyphenate writer, director, producer, accomplished musician, published writer, and actress. She spent years successfully working as an actress in commercials, independent films, and voice-overs. Ever ready for a challenge. You probably know Faith because of her coming-of-age dramedy "Family". Family centers on the lives of a group of lesbian friends who all experience continual strife in their personal and professional lives as a result of being closeted. Creative and determined are the words used to describe Ifa Bumi. Here first full-length poetry collection celebrates unrestrained sexuality, alluding perhaps to masculine or androgynous characteristics of herself. She is a talented wordsmith with her own distinctive voice. Liquid Toffee is…a sustained mediation of unwavering desire and indefinable erotic adoration. Obama in 2010: The Science of Race & The State of the Union Address - Jan 29,2010 | Tonight it's all about my president. A week ago I saw a story on Nightline by Jake Tapper. He went out into the streets with 3 pictures of President Obama. One was lightened, one was his normal color, and one was darkened. The results were telling of where we are with race in this country. Tapper got the idea from a legitimate study done by Eugene Caruso of the University of Chicago. Let's talk about it during the first half of the show. For the second half of the show we'll talk about his State of the Union address. Did you believe the promises? Will his ideas work? Let me know what you think. | 1/28/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Immigration. It Affects You Too - Dec 11,2009 | What do you know about immigration? How does it affect you? Why should you care? We'll be calling for and end to the deportation of Rigo Padilla, a student at UIC facing deportation on December 16th. Let's talk about the issues. Call-in and tell your story or let us know what you think about the immigration. We had crazy technical difficulties at the beginning but we got through and Yasmin provided lots of awesome information and insight into the issues. I really gained some insight into the lives of young immigrants and how some of the struggles they face are not caused by their decisions but that of their parents to come to the US and provide a better life for their family. Listen to the show & learn more about Yasmin below. Yasmin Nair is an academic, activist, and writer. Which mostly means that she struggles to pay rent while living the glamorous life of a freelance writer. She is a member of Gender JUST. Her work has appeared in in Windy City Times, where she is a columnist, reporter, photographer, and book reviewer. It has also appeared in Maximum Rocknroll, Clamor, Discourse, GLQ, make/shift, Mediations, and Time Out Chicago. Her writing and organising address neoliberalism, inequality, and the politics of rescue and affect; the immigration crisis; queer politics and theory, and the contours of a ridiculous gay movement that pretends that the right to marry, the right to kill, and hate crimes legislation actually constitute some kind of leftist agenda. | 12/10/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
