CleanFiber Beat Episode 27: The Manly Art of Retreat | Fiber Beat, Episode 27: "The Manly Art of Retreat" featuring Jon McCoy & Doug Upchurch Media Link: The Manly Art of Retreat (44:20) There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue Four featuring Stella Lange, Rosalind Aymes, Jacey Boggs and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio This year marks the 5th year of the Men's Knitting Retreat events. The spring retreat will be happening in upstate New York this coming May while the Men's Fall Knitting retreat will return to dreamy WA state in early September. Other retreats across the US and even around the globe, while not as established as the spring & fall retreats, are gaining popularity and promise to continue this worthwhile practice. In September 2011, the 4th annual Men's Fall Knitting Retreat was host to two very special gentlemen & entrepreneurs: Jon McCoy of Pocket Wheel & Doug Upchurch from White Bear Fibers. Jon was a guest lecturer & workshop leader, while Doug was attending his very first Men's Knitting Retreat. I spoke with both them during breaks in the manly activities of the event. You know, I met both of these gentlemen at a Men's Knitting Retreat and I cannot stress enough what an enriching experience it is for men to come together and celebrate their creativity. This year we are very fortunate to be able to offer a scholarship to attend the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat this September over Labor Day Weekend. If you know a male knitter whom you'd like to nominate - even if it's yourself - do so on the Men's Knitting Retreat site or send me, WonderMike, a private message on Ravelry. I recently ordered some yarn from Doug called Texas Wild Flowers and it's such a great name and a fabulous colorway. If you haven't seen or heard about White Bear Fibers, do we have a special treat for you. Check out the contest for this episode and see what cool yarn from White Bear Fibers you can win for yourself! Details below. The following people, places & things are mentioned in this episode: Nominate a man for the 2012 Men's Fall Knitting Retreat Norm Abrams/This Old House Cat Bordhi Judith MacKenzie Oregon Flock & Fiber festival Whidby Island Spin In Amelia Garripoli aka Ask the Bellwether WooLee Winder Will Taylor's Clever Kate Tour de Fleece blog, last updated 2009 Tour de Fleece Ravelry forum, active & current Spin Off magazine Ravelry Pocket Wheel forum Skacel's Artfelt Men's Rocky Mountain Retreat Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 27 Doug has generously offered 4 skeins of White Bear Fibers' Northern Silk Sock (BFL & Silk) in a custom dyed colorway chosen by one lucky winner. This is an incredibly generous offer from Doug and we're excited to be able to offer it as prizing. In addition to this, I'm going to offer the two spindles that yours truly made during Jon's "Make Your Own Spindle" workshop. All you have to do to enter this contest is answer the following question: Who is ONE of your favorite guy knitters & why? One of my absolute favorites is my friend and designer, Kyle Kunnecke . He's such a generous soul and a crazy talented artist. I recently did a little photoshoot with him where I saw his latest hand knit design which he is submitting for publication. Hopefully you'll be seeing it soon too. I'll keep you posted. Now, it's your turn. You can leave your answer in the website shownotes or in the Ravelry Fiber Beat forum. One winner for each prize will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS APRIL 30, 2012. I'd like to give a tip of the hat to wheelsmith Jon McCoy and a big bear hug to Doug Upchurch for allowing me to interview them at last year's MFKR. CleanFiber Beat Episode 26: Red Hot | Fiber Beat, Episode 26: "Red Hot" featuring Ysolda Teague Media Link: Red Hot (62:48) There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue Four featuring Stella Lange, Rosalind Aymes, Jacey Boggs and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio Just the mention of Ysolda Teague sets many a knitter's heart to fluttering. She's new to the scene but already firmly established. Ysolda has impressed her fans with clever and classic designs that enhance the figure but never compromise on style. Most people will know her from one of her very first designs, a lovely shawl called Ishbel, but others have fallen under the spell of the Whimsical Little Knits series and her contributions to books such as My Grandmother's Knitting & Brave New Knits. If you've listened to the previous episode of Fiber Beat, "Fiber Best 2011" you already know that my favorite e-Book from 2011 is Ysolda's Little Red In the City. And, there's a funny RELATED story behind why this episode has taken a bit of time to actually come to fruition. I was fortunate enough to attend the Southern California TNNA in January 2011 and it was there that I first met Ysolda and interviewed her. When I found out that Little Red in the City was coming down the pike (and saw the beautiful galleys), I decided to hold off on publishing the episode until the book was out and I could offer it as a prize. Well, what started off being a slight delay, ended up being quite the wait, but all of it was of my own devising. We did indeed wait until the book was coming out, but since Ysolda was going to be in the Bay Area, I asked if we could do a little humorous sketch for the intro and, ever the playful actor, Ysolda agreed. As you will hear, I asked my other talented voice actors, Kristine & Aday (from A Verb for Keeping Warm) to join in to create the intro for this episode. I hope you think it was worth the wait. The following people, places & things are mentioned in this episode: A Stitch in Time (reprint) Meccano Forest Stewardship Council - FSC Puritan Press Ysolda's very first Knitty pattern: Arisaig Heima: Sigur Ros documentary New York Sheep & Wool festival aka Rhinebeck Maryland Sheep & Wool festival Bosworth Spindles Gudrun Johnston aka Shetland Trader Knitting Iceland Bijou Basin yak down fiber Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 26 Now, for this episode's contest, we've got a signed copy of her book - her tour de force - Little Red in the City. Included with this hard copy (and, in fact, with all hard copies) is a code for a PDF version of the book. It is storable in your Ravelry library and compatible mobile devices. All you have to do for a chance to win is answer the following question: What's YOUR favorite fairy tale/children's story and why? I think my favorites are any of the really gruesome Grimm's Fairy Tales. You know the ones where no one makes it out alive and someone gets eaten. But, my absolute favorite is Struwwelpeter, or Shockheaded Peter by Heinrich Hoffmann. :) I know, I'm a gore hound kicking it old school and I LOVE a good scary story! Now, it's your turn. You can leave your answer in the comments section OR in the Ravelry Fiber Beat forum. One winner will be randomly selected from all the entries. DEADLINE FOR ENTERING IS MARCH 30, 2012. A whimsical little hug to Ysolda, Kristine & Aday for performing the opening Little Red Sketch. Big shout out to Fiber Beat sponsor, Entangled magazine. This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue Three featuring Margot Selby, Rachel Lawrence, Jacey Boggs and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio Hello everyone and Happy New Year! As the title of this episode suggests - today Iʼll be doing an overview of the books, ebooks and DVDʼs that I thought were standouts this past year. I've divided my selections into 3 categories: first Books, then E-books, & finally DVDs. The majority of these items were published in 2011 but a few of them were slightly older but nevertheless discoveries that I made only this year. Now keep in mind, listeners, this is not intended to be a definitive list but rather a tip of the hat to my personal favorites. My top books (from number 10 to number 1) are: 10 Secrets of Laid Back Knitters by Lisa Souza and Vicki Stiefel Knit Local by Tanis Gray Westknits Collection, Book Two by Stephen West Wool People & Loft Collection from BrooklynTweed et al Knitter's Book of Socks by Clara Parkes My Grandmother's Knitting by Larissa Brown Charts for Color Knitting by Alice Starmore Spin Art by Jacey Boggs Knit One Knit All by Elizabeth Zimmermann The Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook by Deb Robson & Carol Ekarius My top E-books from (number 10 to number 1): More Last Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson Teeny Tiny Mochimochi Knits by Anna Hrachovec The Shetland Trader by Gudrun Johnston A Life in Stitches by Rachael Herron Cat's Sweet Tomato Heel Socks by Cat Bordhi 7 Small Shawls to Knit by Rosemary (Romi) Hill Knitter's Life List by Gwen Steege Ornaments & Patterns found in Iceland or Ornaments & Patterns found in Iceland Extreme Double Knitting by Alasdair Post-Quinn Little Red in the City by Ysolda Teague My top DVDs & Multimedia (in no particular order): Handspinning Rare Wools by Deb Robson Spinning for Lace by Margaret Stove Knitting Ganseys with Beth Brown-Reinsel by Beth Brown-Reinsel Getting Started on a Drop Spindle by Maggie Casey Spinning Cotton by Stephenie Gaustad Knit Your Own Lopapeysa by Ragnheiður Eiríksdóttir Emags: Colorways, SpinKnit, & Sockupied by Interweave Press If I had to choose the one publication that simply slayed me, it would definitely be the Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook paired with the Handspinning Rare Wools DVD. Both of these gems were the product of a massive amount of research and writing from Deb Robson (F&FS/HRW) & Carol Ekarius (F&FS only). If you have the opportunity to acquire any of these pieces for your personal library, you will be most pleased. I encourage you to explore the book section of your local yarn store. If they don't have them, I bet they can order them for you. You might pay a bit more than ordering them online from a certain discount seller, but you'll be supporting a local economy & quite possibly make some new fiber friends in your own backyard. Winner of Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 24 We had two prizes for this episode: (1) courtesy of A Verb for Keeping Warm, a sampler of Habu's latest yarns from the yarntasting mentioned in the episode AND (2) the Fameuse cardigan pattern from Knit Cook, featuring Habu yarns and a recipe for brandied cherry ice cream The winner is Alaina. CleanFiber Beat Episode 24: Haiku to Habu | Fiber Beat, Episode 24: "Haiku to Habu" featuring Takako Ueki & Darlene Hayes Media Link: Haiku to Habu (52:24) There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. This episode of Fiber Beat is made possible with the support of Entangled magazine, our brand new sponsor from New Zealand! Entangled is a new digital only, quarterly fibercraft publication. Issue Three featuring Margot Selby, Rachel Lawrence, Jacey Boggs and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio One of my favorite things about local yarn shops - and a big reason why I think we should all support our local fiber retailers - is the fact that they bring authors, crafts people, knitters, quilters and fiber artists from all over to our communities where we can interact with them. The fiber arts are all about community - whether it's mothers teaching their children to knit or quilting clubs making quilts for ailing friends - these are activities we share with each other. Your local yarn store is the logical place for those interactions. I am lucky inasmuch as my local yarn store - A Verb for Keeping Warm - takes this responsibility very seriously and they go out of their way to bring artisans and manufacturers from far and near to the store to show their wares. I first came into contact with Habu yarns several years ago. When I saw a compact ball of Habu Yarn with it's butcher block paper label and black san serif type, I was immediately intrigued. Then, when I saw the fiber content of that yarn (pineapple ramie, wool and steel, cotton tape) I had to learn more about the business and the people behind it. At that time, Habu creator and owner Takako Ueki, taught a class here in the Bay Area on how to read and use Japanese knitting patterns which are really architecturally and mathematically concise illustrations. The class was lively and Takako was a fabulous instructor giving us some insight behind the Habu mystique. Most recently, I attended a "yarn tasting" at a Verb for Keeping Warm, my LYS, where I sampled some of the most intriguing new yarns I have seen in quite a while, yarns made of copper, linen paper & even recycled fishing nets. These yarns are not to be found at your regular wool shop. After the yarn tasting, I sat down with Takako to talk about the inspiration for Habu and what we can expect in the future from her creative mind. One of Takako's friends and colleagues is Darlene Hayes (pictured right), whose name is familiar to you if you were a fan of Hand Jive/Nature's Palette naturally dyed yarns (sniff, sniff). Darlene helps Takako at trade shows and she was also on hand for the Habu trunk show. My personal association with Darlene began with my very first spinning guild meeting right here in East Bay: Spindles & Flyers. Darlene was president during my first year of membership and she made sure that the guild experience was dynamic and enriching. It dramatically underscored the importance of community in these fiber pursuits. I had the chance to chat with Darlene about her new venture, Knit Cook. The following people, places and things were mentioned: Men's Fall Knitting Retreat 2011 Knitting Iceland Setsuko Torii's (designer for Habu), book: Hand Knit Works Julie Weisenberger, aka Cocoknits Ori Ami Knits by Olga Buraya-Kefelian & Vanessa Yap-Einbund Knitting & Stitching Show, UK Kirsten Johnstone's (aka Assemblage) patterns More Last Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson San Francisco Zoo Habu Fern Silk yarn Knitting Languages Winner of Fiber Beat CONTEST for Episode No. 23 We had a $15 gift certificate courtesy of Anne Hanson for her Knitspot pattern library. Issue Two featuring Wool & the Gang, Wooly Wormhead, and Donna Druchunas is out now and available through Zinio I’d like you to stop for a moment and think about your fiber journey, passion, obsession, call it what you will. If you are a relatively new knitter such as me (I started in 2004), it’s hard to remember life Before Ravelry. How did we organize patterns, find errata support, show our finished projects to others & interact with our fellow fiber junkies? It wasn’t until Ravelry, that we actually had a nice digital clubhouse to hang out in, get to know one another, learn about yarn, patterns & tools and share all that information with everyone. Ravelry’s ethos supports the underdog, the indie designer, the local yarn stores, the podcasts or a kid who’s just discovered knitting and wants to know MORE. All across the country and even across the globe users have found friends and fiber crafters online when they couldn’t find them in their own towns. Today on Fiber Beat, I catch up with the founders & creators of Ravelry, Jess & Casey Forbes. We talk about the RavAdventure thus far and what the future might hold. Ravelry is truly more than the sum of its parts: Jess’ inspiration, Casey’s innovation and the input of thousands upon thousands of users. These initial elements have combined to create something bigger, a social media phenomenon that is fun AND productive. This is NO facebook for knitters. Bobbin's nest is pleased announce the Honorary Bobbin Program, where you will enjoy limited edition patterns, special shopping days, invites to exclusive events, bonus coupons and giveaways. For more info, visit the Bobbin's Nest blog My introduction to Bohus Stickning or Bohus Knitting was through the beautiful book by Wendy Keele entitled Poems of Color from Interweave Press. In it, I learned about the Swedish design house created by Emma Jacobsson and her commitment to this vital cottage industry during World War II and after. But, what really took my breath away, were the extraordinary designs: painterly, impressionistic, architectural and perhaps most of all, stylish to this day. There were hats, gloves, scarves and sweaters that were knitted from custom-milled yarns of fine wools and angora bunny fiber. With names like Blue Shimmer, The Wild Apple, The Mists & The Swan, evoking images of the mystical, the magical and the mythological. Wendy Keele's book contains re-workings of the original vintage Bohus patterns with heavier gauge yarns from contemporary manufacturers. I didn't truly understand the difference (between the vintage and newer updates) until I was able to see a true Bohus sweater in person. That opportunity, came during a Stitches West workshop with Susanna Hansson , focusing on the history of Bohus Stickning. Today on fiber Beat, join me for a conversation with Susanna Hansson, tireless advocate and passionate chronicler of the history of these famously beautiful garments and the people who made them possible. Susanna is a wonderful teacher and advocate for the Bohus Stickning tradition. If you have the chance to take a workshop with her, DO IT, you will NOT be disappointed. Check out the show notes for links to Susanna's workshop calendar and her original patterns. You'll also find links to Solsilke, where you can purchase kits to knit your very own Bohus work of art. Bobbin's Nest is a fabric and yarn store specializing in: knitting, sewing, crochet, and hand embroidery. Episode twenty - that's got a nice ring. It’s sweet to be outta the teens, let me tell you. A nice even twenty. A twenty year old can be a diligent student working hard to get through college or it can be a deadbeat sleeping till noon, eating junk food and watching reruns all day long. Hopefully you kind listeners will think of us as the former: studious, productive, disciplined and ready to go to school! On today’s episode we do just that - as a matter of fact, we go Old Skool. After years of following their exploits on the web, I finally met and interviewed the talented Caro Sheridan (aka Splityarn) and her partner in crime, the hilarious Deb Brisson (aka Stitchy McYarnpants). Earlier this year, I attended my very first TNNA, which stands for The National Needlearts Association trade show in Southern California. I went as a journalist, but also as a worker bee/teacher/advocate for the Verb for Keeping Warm posse. The event was a veritable Who’s Who in the world of fiberarts. Luckily for us, Caro & Deb flew in to promote their latest collaboration, a book of patterns entitled Knitting It Old School featuring modern re-interpretations of vintage & kitschy classics. And, it turned out that TNNA was the opportunity I'd been waiting for to sit down with Deb & Caro. We talked about sewing, knitting, photography & all the hard work that went into their latest opus: Knitting It Old School. KIOS features the work of many talented designers from all over - with patterns ranging from cheeky hot pants to his and hers sweater sets. It just so happens that two of the designers featured in “Knitting it Old School” are friends of mine. Tammy George (known to her Etsy fans/followers as Punk Rawk Purl) and Stephen Houghton (guy knitter/designer and the first boy on the Blue Moon, hizKNITS). I bribed them into the Fiber Beat studio one Sunday morn with coffee & croissants. We talked about their backgrounds, their designs & their work for Knitting It Old School. Knitting It Old School is not your regular pattern book. It’s a stylish, humorous romp through the history of a select group of vintage garments totally retooled for a modern sensibility. While it may not appeal to the less adventurous, it definitely has something to delight the knitting thrill seeker, the fashionista and the retro-hipster who wants a breath of fresh air. When I was first told I should visit the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, I envisioned a meticulously displayed and tastefully curated collection of traditional quilted pieces. But, as this recommendation was coming from my multi-crafty poly-artistic friend, Kyle Kunnecke, I knew that there must be more edge to it than that. And boy was I in for a tasty textile treat!!! For my first trip to the museum, I saw two side-by-side shows. The first show was "Eden Re-imagined" showcasing the embroidered art of Leo Chiachio and Daniel Giannone. The sister show in this exhibition was called "Earthly Paradise" and it was a dazzling display of quilted tapestries from the two-woman collective A Bee (aka Carrie Houseman and Darbury Novoselic). These two shows were enough to convince me that the SJMoQ&T must have a passionate curatorial staff that I had to meet. Fortunately, I had an introduction (through my buddy Kyle) to Deborah Corsini, the visionary behind the first show that I experienced at the museum. My talk with Deborah is the subject of the first half of this episode of Fiber Beat. For the second half the show, I chatted with Kyle and about his workshops, his designs and his journey through the worlds of art, textiles & knitting If you are fortunate enough to live in the San Jose/Bay Area, I encourage most strongly to go check out Primary Structures, the brand new show at the Museum of Quilts & Textiles featuring knitted and crocheted artwork. You can also sign up for workshops with Kyle & even check out the “Southwestern Banded Blankets” exhibit that is showing concurrently with the PS show. CleanEpisode 11: New & Neatby Nitting (aka The Letter "N") | Media Link: New & Neatby Nitting (44:23) There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. This episode of Fiber Beat is underwritten by Bobbin's Nest Studio, from Santa Clara, CA. Bobbin's Nest is a yarn and fabric store, specializing in materials for knitting, crocheting, sewing and hand embroidery. This fall, Bobbin's Nest celebrates it's third anniversary of bringing fiber and fabric sophistication to the Bay Area. In this episode I spend some quality time with two very imaginative and colorful characters, Debbie New & Lucy Neatby. What I love about both Debbie & Lucy is their playfulness in design and their fearlessness in color exploration. I spoke with both of them after completing Stitches West workshops in Northern California. This episode is another gem from the vaults, so from time to time there might be references to items that are "coming up" that have already passed (i.e. Think Outside the Sox book, etc.). For this video supplement, I've created a photo MAN-tage of images from the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat from 2008 & 2009 An original composition called "Long Live Happiness" from the band "A Night of Serious Drinking" was used for this video. The band is sadly no longer making music, but I still love this song, and their work in general, to pieces. I thought the lyrics were eerily appropriate for the photo mantage, so we've placed them in the video piece Performed by A Night of Serious Drinking: Anthony Bonet – vocals, guitar and keyboards Mark Yahnke – vocals, bass and keyboards Bennett Green – drums Produced and Engineered by Greg Freeman Additional production by Anthony Bonet DON'T FORGET => The first ever Fiber Beat SCHOLARSHIP for Episode No. 10 / MFKR 2010 This year, the Men's Fall Knitting Retreat will be held just outside of Seattle in the City of Federal Way at the Dumas Bay Centre. CleanEpisode 9: A Tweed Glows in Brooklyn | Media Link: A Tweed Glows in Brooklyn (39:50) There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Jared Flood, better known to the knitting world as BrooklynTweed, is a much admired and sought-after designer, blogger, teacher & photographer. He truly is a one-man, A-to-Z fiber phenom. Jared can spin the yarn; he can design the garment; he can knit it up; and he can photograph it all to perfection, ready for glossy full-color fashion magazines. And, if you're lucky, you can have him show you how to did it. I have a secret suspicion that Jared has eliminated the need for sleep... or cloned himself. At least that's what my ego is hoping. You can now watch it at Vimeo or with the inline player below. Fiber Beat Video Supplement 8: Doing the Horizontal (Draw) from WonderMike on Vimeo. In the previous Fiber Beat audio episode 8, "PGR, In A New Way", Priscilla Gibson-Roberts talks about the horizontal draw, a description of arm movements while spinning. In her spinning technique book, "High Whorling", she makes a distinction between draw (what your arms do) such as long draw or short forward draw and draft (what your hands do) as in woolen vs. worsted drafting. In this Fiber Beat Video Supplement #8, I demonstrate the horizontal draw on a drop spindle. The fiber I'm using is A Verb for Keeping Warm baby camel/silk (50/50) in the "French Monk's Finest" colorway. My spindle is a PGR collapsible design, produced by Jorn Piel, available online from Paradise Fibers. PRESENTING: a new Fiber Beat CONTEST for this Video Supplement Episode No. 8. Meeting your gurus can be a bit nerve-wracking, but in this case, it was more like a homecoming. This episode’s guest is truly an icon in the knitting and spinning world: Priscilla Gibson-Roberts. She has written books about traditional & historical sweater design, top-whorl spindle spinning and ethnic sock construction. In all that Priscilla produces, there is a love and respect for doing things “in the old way”. Fortunately, for us, she’s also interested in preserving their technical details and sharing them with future generations. I spoke with Priscilla during breaks in her lecture schedule and my classes at Sock Summit 2009. We actually stayed until the lights went off, but I would have continued recording in total darkness had I been giving the chance. We, as crafters, artists and artisans, are indeed richer and more knowledgeable, thanks in large part to the work of PGR and Deb Robson (Nomad Press). I feel honored to have met them both. Here’s what we’d like for you to do: simply thank the person who got you started in the fiber arts. It can be anything you like: a phone call, a letter, cookies, crafts or a meditation. For example, I want to thank my MawMaw Ellen Ruth for showing me the path to fiber fulfillment. Since she's no longer with us, I'm offering this up to the cosmos for her to hear. Now, it's your turn. There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Welcome new listeners and viewers to our next Video Supplement to Fiber Beat, Number 4. This episode we feature the unvention of Sarah Hauschka, The Magic Loop. This knitting technique allows one to work circularly on any size project whose circumference measurement is smaller than that of the total needle length. The bonuses are that you only use one long circular needle and you eliminate those pesky ladders that can form when using double pointed needles (DPNs). The following items were mentioned and referenced in the Video Supplement: The Magic Loop by Sarah Hauschka and Bev Galeskas. CleanEpisode 4: Skacel-ebrate! (featuring Karin Skacel and Brian Kohler) | Episode 4: Skacel-ebrate! (featuring Karin Skacel) Media Link: Skacel-ebrate! (32:11) There's a million crafters in Fiber City and we've all got a yarn to spin. Skacel Knitting is a family-owned business that has been going strong for over two decades. They introduced Addi Turbo needles to the United States but they also distribute a range of fine yarns, patterns and tools for knitting, crocheting and, now, felting. This episode I talked with Karin Skacel, the current chief of Skacel Knitting at Stitches West in the spring of 2009. I also spoke with Brian Kohler on the telephone about an ambitious sock knitting project he has begun with a specially designed Addi Turbo circular needle. A bit of trivia for the active listeners. Near the end of the interview, I ask Karin a somewhat odd question about what makes Skacel "delightful". The reason for this construction was that I originally conceived of the new podcast being named "Fiber Delight" (like Rapper's Delight, my first 12" single AND where I took my online/Ravelry name). But, I decided to go with a more film noir name, "Fiber Beat" and the idea of asking the "delightful" question fell away. In this instance, I really liked Karin's answer because it speaks to her business philosophy which I personally find.... delightful. So, I kept it in the final edit. I hope you like it! The following people, places and things were mentioned: Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt Addi Click interchangeable needle system Artfelt Sock Summit 2009 Skacel Blog Melissa Leapman Cat Bordhi and her new sock book, Personal Footprints Hansigurumi, incredible knitted toy patterns by Hansi Singh The WINNER of our third Fiber Beat CONTEST is Kristin and she receives 1 oz. of delicious Bison fiber from Judith Mackenzie McCuin's company, Buffalo Gals. We also did another Twitter promotional contest for the podcast. Our two winners for the contest were Shannon and Jenny. Shannon receives a batt of Faerie Mountain Fibres and Jenny receives my handspun from a batt of Faerie Mountain Fibres. CONGRATULATIONS to our three winners and thank you to all who entered.
