Floating Coats - Atlanta-Decatur GA based purveyors of fine tunes since 1998 - present "Tunes By The Ton." This ongoing podcast documents the good, the stellar and the surreal collected from a mountainous archive of live, practice, and "guerilla" recordings. We will trace the many iterations and line-ups of the band: from our beginnings in rock 'n roll devilry, to tradish-acoustic string band, and all the (mild-mannered) madness that has blended the two ever since. Floating Coats / "Gold Days" : There's A Roach In My Beer [Best Of 2006] | FLOATING COATS / "Gold Days" ... 2006 was as active a time as the Coats' instinctively slack gig-schedule could possibly withstand, what has come to be known as the "gig-a-month" year. (Ambitious, indeed!) Coat-alum Dave Goldberg had settled in and the "Gold" era hit stride. The gents added a LP's worth of new tunes to the catalog, honed that which had made the transition from earlier eras and performed a series of stand-out shows (Red Light, Alcove and Decatur CD, esp). Saturday October 25, 2003, was a "progressive-traditional" Halloween at the original Alcove Arts Gallery. The gents, in full barbershop quartet garb, were fueled that night by a madcap crowd of costumed crazies, the usual alt-art freakshow that was the Alcove trademark—and yes: some liberal libations. A return to our early rock-n-roll roots, digs up the last 'proper' gig Mojo played way back yonder in the early 'aughts. Playing to a packed house (and that is a joke), this is as much a recorded celebration of that era as anything. And to prove the revelry equaled the performance, in a Blues Bros moment we wound up owing the bar 3 bucks after being paid and the tab settled! The Peach State Festival show on Little Five Points / Atlanta's WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) has been a regular stop for the Coats since the 'Prog/Trad' Days. But this here is the gold-standard 'Gold-era' appearance. Setting up in the 'old bunkhouse' with loveable quirky host, J.R., the Coats deliver a memorable broadcast. Performing some new songs, some golden chestnuts, this episode represents the gents at their unplugged finest. There was something in the studio air that night. Recorded over the first part of 2011, here is our album release party held at good ol' Decatur CD. Part showcase, part-farewell, all-celebration, this would be our final gig with drummer-guitarist-harpist-songwriter-do-it-all guy, Dave "Red Eye" Goldberg. Gold's five plus years in the Coats' hot-seat marks an era of slumbering productivity for the band. Why even they are still amazed they pulled off recording and producing a whole album in 3 months! The Coats could only keep 'demon electricity' down for so long, a line-up change in Fall 2004 resulting in a power trio that navigated the blend of electric-acoustic with smug ease. Here's a demo recorded in Jim's living room over the first few months of 2005, an all-original collection that (along with a few live "Prog / Trad" crossover tracks) is quintessential "blendo." The Coats' musical odyssey has long revolved around the lax minstrel club-like tradition of practice night. HHL lives up to, no, it revels in said tradition ... Floating Coats / "Prog-Trad" : The Tower [May 4 2004] | FLOATING COATS / "Prog-Trad" ... Blending "progressive" rock stylings with "traditional" string band influences - while pulling the plug on demon electricity to go all-acoustic - required gumption and gusto. These qualities were put to use in this quintessential "Prog-Trad" era recording. Breaking and entering was not the Coats original intent on the night of May 4, 2004. But they did what they had to do in order to record inside the old Fourth Ward water tower. At the height of their "Prog-Trad" powers, this 6-song EP runs the gamut of the catalog at the time. Floating Coats / MOJO JOJO : Live @ Cajun Kitchen [Dec 15 2000] | FLOATING COATS / "The MOJO JOJO Archives" ... December 15, 2000, would produce the quintessential MOJO live experience: out-of-the-gate, cruising along, faster and faster, all the while teetering at the edge of flying apart at the seams (and, well, often flying apart at the seams). Performing this night as "El Supersonicos" (for some forgotten reason), MOJO blows through a furious set of sonic mayhem. There is no let-up, the show delivering on its natural course: to wind up in a pile of distorted feedback-fueled wreckage.
