Every show consists of live experiments in long-form sound collage, recontextualization, plunderphonics, etc. in an attempt to revitalize interest in the radio format. Episodes 001-043 were broadcast live on KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis, California; the rest have been made with the intention of going directly online until the show finds a new home. Frantic, useless cries (can, will, or won’t) knife your ossicles (the malleus, the incus, the stapes) until (potentially) frivolous recording edicts drive (with remarkable haste) further regression into their (own, aging) home. Nonaah In Order: “Nonaah In Order” is a study in pure plunderphonics. But what then was the corporeal substance towards which I was advancing? I knew that the genus pelicaninae includes four distinct species: the booby, the pelican, the cormorant, the frigate-bird. The greyish form that appeared before me was not a booby. The sculptured block I set eyes on was not a frigate-bird. The frosted flesh I observed was not a cormorant. Now I could see him, the man with encephalon bereft of annular protuberance! I delved dimly amid my memory’s meanderings: in what torrid or icy region had I already observed that very long, broad, convex, vaulted beak with pronounced, unguiculate, inflated bridge hooked at its tip; those toothed, straight edges; the branches of that lower mandible separate almost to the end of the gap filled with a membraneous skin; that wide pouch, yellow and sacciform, occupying that whole throat and capable of distending itself considerably; and those very narrow nostrils, longitudinal, almost imperceptible, hollowed into a basal groove!Had this living being, its respiration pulmonary and simple, its body decked with hair, been bird complete, down to the soles of its feet, and not merely to its shoulders, it would not then have been so hard for me to recognise it: a very easy thing to do, as you are about to see for yourselves. But this time, I excuse myself; for my demonstration to be lucid I would require one such bird to be placed on my work table, even if only a stuffed one. Besides, I am not rich enough to procure one. Following step by step a previous hypothesis, I would immediately have determined its true nature and found a place in the outline of natural history for him in whose sickly posture I admired such nobility. Frizzltroniks & Plunderphonics — 055: 2010.7.25 | Show download: Encephalous – Frizzltroniks & Plunderphonics #055 It began in ancient Carcosa when the first humans were contacted by the serpent people of Valusia. The latter brought with them certain fruits with strange powers. These fruits would be called hallucinogens or psychedelics today, but what they did to the brain of the eater was not in any sense a hallucination. It opened him to invasion by the lloigor. The chief fruit used in these rites was a botanical cousin of the modern apple, yellowish or golden in color, and the snake people promised, “Eat of this and you shall become all-powerful.” In fact, the eaters became enslaved by the lloigor, and especially by Hastur, who took up residence in the Lake of Hali; distorted versions of what happened have come down to us in various African legends about people who had commerce with snakes and lost their souls, in the Homeric tale of the lotus eaters, in Genesis, and in the Arabic lore utilized in the fiction of Robert W. Chambers, Ambrose Bierce and others. Soon, the Cult of the Yellow Sign was formed among the eaters of the golden apples, and its first high priest, Gruad, bargained with Hastur for certain powers in return for which the lloigor were fed on human sacrifices. The people were told that the sacrifices were good for the crops — and this, in fact, was partially true, for the lloigor ate only the energy of the victim, and the body, buried in the fields, gave back its nitrogen to the soil. This was the beginning of religion — and of government. Gruad controlled the Temple, and the Temple soon controlled Hali, and, then, all of Carcosa. So things went for many thousands of years, until the priests were rich, fat and decadent, while the citizens lived in terror and slavery. The number of sacrifices increased ever, for Hastur grew with each victim whose energy he absorbed and his appetite grew with him. Finally, among the people, there arose one who had been refused admission to the priesthood, Ma-lik, and he taught that humanity could become all-powerful, not through eating the golden apples and sacrificing to the lloigor, but through a process he called rational thought. He was, of course, fed to Hastur as soon as the priests heard of this teaching, but he had followers, and they quickly learned to keep their thoughts private and plan their activities in secret. This was the age of midnight arrests, purge trials and accelerating sacrifices in Carcosa, and eventually the followers of Ma-lik — the few who had escaped extermination — fled to the Turanian subcontinent. Actually, the apotheosis of Furbish Lousewart V had been engineered by the same group of alpha males who had been promoting the Revolution of Lowered Expectations all along. These were very cunning old primates in several of the most skillful predator bands on Terra. Because of the stealth and skill of these bands-made up of successful predator families that had been intermarrying for several generations-they collectively owned 99.4 percent of all territory and resources of Unistat. Sylvia Goldfarb raised a sardonic eyebrow. It had been a witless suggestion. Justin decided morosely that the literary world had never been the same since the drug revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. “Pretty little boidies picking in the toidies,” he said gruffly to both of them and walked out. Sylvia Goldfarb waited. There was something ominous in her waiting. Suddenly the sun’s body rages. Coiled flames, balls of gas, roll out. The sun looks like a giant fiery arachnid or octopus. One great flame comes rolling toward the earth, burning red gas which turns yellow, then green, then blue, then white. Then he began to log his designs in a large leather book; and as he counted designs and described them, the pages began to fill as the sun continued to return. Wise men have regarded the earth as a tragedy, a farce, even an illusionist’s trick; but all, if they are truly wise and not merely intellectual r****ts, recognize that it is certainly some kind of stage in which we all play roles, most of us being very poorly coached and totally unrehearsed before the curtain rises. Is it too much if I ask, tentatively, that we agree to look upon it as a circus, a touring carnival wandering about the sun for a record season of four billion years and producing new monsters and miracles, hoaxes and bloody mishaps, wonders and blunders, but never quite entertaining the customers well enough to prevent them from leaving, one by one, and returning to their homes for a long and bored winter’s sleep under the dust?
