Change Jesus Walks on the Water Matthew 14: 22-32 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance[a] from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” When we step out and take a risk... -we stretch our faith - our faith is strengthened - other's faith is strengthened Jesus Calms the Storm Matt 8:23-27 23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Intentionality – Worship Is… – Clint Ware | What is worship? Why has this always been important to God’s people? Matthew 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. Matthew 14:33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 28:8-10 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Worship is not something we do on accident, it is our response to the realization of who He is and What he has done What is worship? Intentionality – Who We have Become – Clint Ware | Who We Have Become Because of Who Comes.Intentionality Intention alone changes nothing Intention followed with action brings change Radical Hospitality rad·i·cal thoroughgoing or extreme, especially as regards change from accepted or traditional forms hos·pi·tal·i·ty φιλοξενία - philoxenia from phílo, "friend" xeno, "a stranger" readiness to treat a stranger as a friend Intentional Radical Hospitality How can we be intentional about our hospitality? How can I get over the fear that keeps me from welcoming a stranger into my life? The Disciples meet Saul/Paul Acts 9:17-31 (Story of Paul returning to Jerusalem after Damascus) 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul in Damascus and Jerusalem Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. 20 At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God. 21 All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” 22 Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.[a] 23 After many days had gone by, the Jews conspired to kill him, 24 but Saul learned of their plan. Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him. 25 But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall. 26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. 28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29 He talked and debated with the Grecian Jews, but they tried to kill him. 30 When the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. 31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord. What is this guys intention? They had to question his intent just as the believers in Damascus had wondered what was going on.. Acts 9: 21 All those who heard him were astonished and asked, “Isn’t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” Acts 9:26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. The Question of Intention “what is this persons intention?” What if... ...we ask a different question? Acts 9:27-28 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. Affirmation of our Faith – Mitchell Hedgepeth | Paul in Ephesus While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the inland regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?’ They replied, ‘No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.’ Then he said, ‘Into what then were you baptized?’ They answered, ‘Into John’s baptism.’ Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.’ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Intentionality – The Father’s Intention for the Son – Clint Ware | Jan 8th - Intentionality: The Father’s Intention for the Son Matt 3:13-17 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” What was Jesus’ intent in being baptized? To say to the people, “John is fulfilling my intention for him and what he says if right.” What was the Fathers intent in speaking these words? “this is my son whom I love, In him I am well pleased?” To say to the people Jesus is fulfilling my intention for him and what he says is right.” And what is God’s intention for us? 1 John 3:1-3 1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. Romans 8:10-17 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. If not, could it be that you are still thinking that it is all about you and your sin when in reality it is about Jesus and His obedience. It has never been Gods intention that you become his child by being obedient to a lists of rules It is His intent that by faith you accept the sacrifice of Jesus given in obedience. Please Declare Your Intention – Clint Ware | Intentionality: Please Declare Your Intention!In the Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations we talked about this idea of Faith Development. As we look forward to this coming year we want to challenge you with the adjective we used when we talked about it. We would like this to be our theme for this coming year. We want this to be the idea that everything we do is tied to. We want this year to be the year of IntentionalityJan 1st - Intentionality: Please Declare Your Intention! I Tim 6:11-12 11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. Run Away Run Toward Run in a hamster wheel When we look back over our shoulder at the recent history of Clinton FUMC and then look at where we are today, we see the fruit of intention. Considering the past and the present, what will we declare to be our intention for 2012? My Declaration of Intent for the Intentional Development of my faith this yearIn 2012 It is my intention to purposefully grow in my faith and love for my Lord Jesus this year. To this end, I resolve to:o Begin or maintain a regular, personal devotional time where I will both speak and listen my Savior. o Begin or maintain a regular time of intercessory prayer for my church, my Pastors, our missionaries, the people on prayer list, and any others needs God puts on my heart. o Commit to the expectation of Worship+2. In this I will: do all I can to be in Sunday Worship each week unless unavoidable circumstances prevent me from doing so, be involved in and regularly attend a Life Group, Small Group Bible Study, and/or Sunday School class where my spirit can be challenged and fed, be involved in some sort of service ministry in, around, or though my church. kitchen ministry children’s church children’s sunday school volunteer in church office commit to go on a mission trip help with missions fundraising initiatives | 1/2/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
