| 1 | VideoWhy I Bought 1 Share of Facebook Stock | These last few weeks have been pretty tough. Last week my back went out, so I did very limited work. This week, I had an anxiety attack - something I was told to expect with a Blood Pressure medication I have been taking. I am now at about 90%. I am hoping to re-start iPad365 on a few episodes a week. But we'll see once I am done with Geek Smack! for today. BlogWorld & New Media Expo is only a week and a half away! I am putting together video for the show, and looking for people that are going. If you are, let me know and we'll get on a Google Hangout to talk. I am also looking for writers to Geekazine. People who can write about the newest gadgets coming out. If interested, please email geekazine at gmail. Geek Smack! Geek News: Space: SpaceX Launches Disrupt or Music: Gtar Rocks Infographic: Facebook Power User Solar Eclipse: 9 Inventive pictures of Solar Eclipse Audiophile: Sonos Subwoofer Mobile: Sidecar iPhone, Android App LEGO: FIRST Robotics Teams Graduation Grants- Geek Smack: Why I Bought One Share of Facebook Last week, Facebook filed their Internet Public Offering. It was a modest $38 a share, which some predicted would go up to $100 a share. However, after a fluctuating day, the stock was right back at $38. Monday didn't bring any good news either, as it dropped to $31.46 by Tuesday morning. The biggest problems with the stock is that Facebook gives away a lot of content without ads. One out of every Seven users access the site through the mobile phone or tablet. That is a lot of money being wasted. And while sometimes its good to give away the horse for free, when someone else owns the horse, you have to make sure you can pay the lease. So on Friday, I made sure I bought 1 share of Facebook stock. Why? Mostly for novelty. I bought a share of a tech giant the day it went on sale. I missed it with Yahoo!, I missed it with Google. I was too young at the time to buy Microsoft and Apple when they issued. However, I can say I am a First gen Facebook shareholder. One share doesn't sound like much, but if the stock was to skyrocket, it would have split. Then one share would have become two. If the performance picks up, I could see this stock split a few times. Think about it - two becomes four, four becomes eight, then 16, 32, 64, 128. The chances of the stock splitting seven times are not great, but 2 or 3 could happen. If shares rise to $100, I have $800 in 1 $38 stock. Even if it doesn't split, I'll have $100 in a $38 stock I bought. But if the stock fails, | 5/22/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Drama Continues - Scott Thompson Steps Down. So Yahoo! is looking for another CEO. It's another disappointment for the online search giant, as they hold on to their former glory. Scott Thompson stepped down because of questions about his resume. But it does ask the question - who doesn't fudge their resumes a bit to get a job? I know I've padded my resume a bit to show my experience. But a CEO position is a bit different than an IT job, I suppose. Still, if he was doing the job, who really cares? So that brings the question: Did Scott Thompson do the job? It looked like he was on the right direction. He had to make some hard choices, and did them. Yet, I am not behind the scenes, so I don't know what happened. As Thompson stepped down, he brought a bombshell with him: He has cancer. Thyroid cancer, to be exact. But how do we know if he's telling the truth now? After all, he did fudge his resume... Geek Smack! is a weekly video show and podcast that comes out every Tuesday evening. Star Wars - Eat Me You Will, Yoda Cake Voting (or Star Trek) - Nichelle Nichols for School Board Geek Smack: Is Apple Stock Heading to the Heavens, or Heading for a Crash? $1000 a share. That is what some analysts are seeing in Applestock. It is looking like Apple could also poise to become the first company to hit $1 Trillion in revenue. An amazing feat, and they have their fanboys to thank for that. I do have to admit, my household has more Apple products than ever before. A Macbook to the left of me, an iPad in my bag, and an iPhone on the table. While I still have PCs, and my Macbook lives in a Windows world 90% of the time, I am still amazed how much I drank the proverbial Kool-Aid. Some people are heralding CEO Tim Cook for continuing the trend that Steve Jobs started. I said it before - Jobs was the Pirate, now Cook's job is to solidify the business so it leads the pack. Many issues arose after Jobs untimely departure. Foxconn's staffing issues, the President indirectly calling out Apple for taking jobs overseas. With any other CEO, that could have taken down the company. Cook is like an experienced ship captain, sailing effortlessly through the storm. Apple rides high after pioneering the MP3 music player, smartphone and (technically) the tablet. Think about it - how many people said in 2010 they wouldn't own a tablet? I was one of them. All during this time, Apple stock rose. Ten years ago, it only would have cost you $12.37 a share to be a part of Apple. This time last year, AAPL was at $238 a share. Now, it trades at $628, and grows at least $25-50 a share when a new product rolls out. If you had invested 1,000 shares last year, you saw a 3 time return. And according to the Analysts, it's not done yet. If shares continue like this, you could see $1800 a share by next year (but more likely around $1200)! Is this a good thing? Apple sits on top of a tall heap. It looks stable, and feels stable, but if this pile is to ever tumble, billionaires could become penniless within days. It may not happen. But I still wish I would have invested in Apple when I had the chance over 10 years ago... The Geek Smack! is a weekly video show and podcast that comes out every Tuesday evening. Nokia does too. Who will win? You might basically know what it is - If you have a phone, you have a SIM card. This was the card that allowed your information to move from one phone to the next. Only problem was, it was always "Upgraded" before you could put it into another phone. I think in all the phones I had, there was only one time where I could move the SIM card from one to the other (and I went from one Nokia phone to another). SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module, and was first introduced in 1991 by Giesecke & Devrient,a german company that provides security solutions to bank notes, smart cards, and more. It's designed to keep your personal information just that, but sometimes there was room to put on a few SMS messages and phone numbers. The official "Name" of the new SIM is called 4FF UICC. Both Apple, and Nokia filed for this standard. Apple's standard looks like today's SIM card with jagged edges. Nokia has more of an SD card feel to their SIM - which may cause for some patent issues. Why does this matter to you? Well, like I said, if you have a cell phone, you have a SIM card. If you Whoever gets the standard, will get a small amount of the cost for the phone. For Apple, it's more cash for their pocket. For Nokia, it might be the one thing that keeps them from going bankrupt. Topic of the Week: Could Siri Break out of Apple? What other Software Could Break Free? Today, we found out that Siri, the voice assistant of Apple iPhone 4S - will be incorporated into Mercedes Benz vehicles. They are doing it to make hands-free voice assistance easier. It also sets a new model for Apple - going in-market outside of a self-controlled Apple environment. Back in 1998, Apple cancelled all of their 3rd party contracts so they could control the hardware and software environment. That has been like that ever since (with the exceptions of iTunes, Quicktime and Safari, which have Windows solutions). But with Mercedes Benz getting the Siri software, this starts to ask a question - Is Apple ready to concede the proprietary hardware - software solution? First, let's look at Siri, and where it could go. You might not see Siri on an XBox anytime soon, but why not a PlayStation or Wii? Siri is in Benz right now, but could they also find the software in Ford, Chevy, Honda, and more? What about your refrigerator or washing machine? We know that Apple is turning a new corner with CEO Tim Cook - doing things that Steve Jobs would have cringed at. Would Tim break the cardinal rules of Jobs and let the dogs run wild? If Apple was to break their walled hardware-software garden and put other software on competing devices, people would start getting used to the environment, and possibly migrate over. Now I'm not talking about having Psystar start back up and making Hackintosh computers. But what if Garage Band or Final Cut Pro was available for a Linux based computer? Heck, what if you could get an Apple app store for Windows? It would change the computer topagraphic immensely. Then again, this might be a one-time occurrance. Never to repeat again. But wouldn't it be cool? The Geek Smack! is a weekly video show and podcast that comes out every Tuesday evening. Your host: Jeffrey Powers - talks tech news, | 2/28/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Topic of the Week: MySpace is Back! MySpace is going back to their roots. It's about time. For most of you, MySpace was a word that died around 2007 when you switched to Facebook. Rupert Murdoch's version of MySpace turned out to become "Not MySpace". It also became the joke of the internet - To the point that Murdoch recanted Social Media. But in the last couple years, MySpace did something that you might not have seen, but a lot of bands have. They went back to their roots. Of course, MySpace was first a musician hosting site, then added fans. Now, they focus on the musicians and bands. When Justin Timberlake bought it in June 29th, 2011, we thought he was just taking from his role from "The Social Network" and do what Sean Parker did with Napster. Instead, he brought music to the forefront. Now, with focus on MySpaceTV, MySpace could become the MTV of the internet. Their new music player brought back 1 million people in 24 hours. This also brings a question of how the record companies will see MySpace in the upcoming months. Because MySpace can glaum off those thousands of artists that don't have record deals. In fact, Who is to say that Timberlake doesn't capitalize on that with his own record label (MySpace Records). We'll see how MySpace evolves. If done right, you will be coming to that social network once again. The Geek Smack! is a weekly video show and podcast that comes out every Tuesday evening. Topic of the Week: Verizon Joins Redbox So You can Rent More Movies I have to admit: I have been seriously thinking of getting rid of my Netflix account. Last week, Starz ended their agreement with Netflix, and Netflix hasn't updated their online streaming in 3 weeks. How many old TV series can we endure? I did watch some 2 1/2 star B-movie that I enjoyed three to four nights ago. But I have found I am not going to Netflix as much as I have. Enter in Redbox and Verizon. Now, I am not keen on heading to the store to drop off a movie 24 hours later, but the prices are a lot better than Amazon. With Verizon adding streaming in the second half of 2012, you could see Redbox compete hard with these online services. Of course, in order to do so, Redbox will have to get on the Roku, Boxee, XBox360, PS3 and embed in many different TV's and Blu-Ray players. What about the DVD rental? Would you choose to get yours in the mail, or drive to the Kiosk to drop off? Mail has convenience whereas Kiosks means you might get that next movie right now. I hope they also initiate a "reserve" option. I can reserve a movie in a queue, then have 20 minutes to go get it from the Kiosk I reserved it from. We'll see how this plays out. Maybe Netflix should start thinking about Kiosks themselves? The Geek Smack! is a weekly video show and podcast that comes out every Tuesday evening.
