Great Show!

My first experiences with podcasting were several years back, when I began listening to two World of Warcraft related podcasts, Taverncast and World of Warcast. The schedules of the podcasts weren't always consistent (I'm looking at you, Bryce), but the shows always made for great listening. Now recently, the hosts of each show, Bryce and Michael, have got together to put on this great show covering all-things nerd, Geekistry.

The range of topics is wonderful, and as a self-professing geek, there is always something of interest being discussed. Mix engaging commentary on everything from epic movie releases to the rise (and fall) of MTV with a dash of humor from Bryce and you've got Geekistry.

The show is definitely worth listening to - it has quickly become one that I look forward to hearing.

Keep up the great work, Mike and Bryce!!

So long and thanks for all the nothing

The new show sounds quite good and it's nice to hear the sound effects and other audio elements finally polished just as I'd pushed for during my time as co-founder. I'm sure Bryce will add fun to the show and the best of luck to him in doing so.

However, this review can't go without me speaking my piece about the first 56 episodes that are the largest representation of this cast to date. I won't try to hide my bitterness or resentment, nor will I deny that the "new" show superficially sounds better, but I'd like to speak of the lack of integrity the show has demonstrated until this point.

As the co-founder I thought it a wise business practice to have things in writing and asked dozens if times for this. Dozens more times I was rejected and left with only emotional manipulation to convince me that Geekistry was half mine. Michael refused from day one to legally document what "parts" belonged to each of us and what we were each financially and creatively responsible for. This left the dilemma in re who was responsible for content. For example, he blamed me for not writing more (on the blog) yet would never outline his expectations specifically. Because of this, the quality of the shows 1-56 suffered and the website was drab. Neither of us put enough into it.

While Michael technically owns the geekistry.com domain, I paid for plenty - domain hosting, HD video hosting, purchased website themes - and even "donated" 100% of my profit "share" to him when I hoped it would be reinvested in the show. Sadly the investments seem in vain as shows 1-56 lacked polish and professionalism.

Creatively, Geekistry was a meld of our individual podcast ideas from a time before we'd met. I'm a blogger and writer and wanted to venture into a new space of audio creativity. Mike was a seasoned podcaster and under his tutoring and our collaboration I thought the show would be fun. In my opinion, however, the show suffered from being quite one-sided at times. Efforts I employed to learn the tech and production of the show were shooed away - in essence the whole project turned into a one-man band. I think the dominating topics in shows 1-56 are the fairly obvious indicators of who was pulling the strings... and who was the eye-candy, even though said eye-candy was never allowed access to ratings or iTunes numbers.

Finally, with nothing on the books to back up what was "mine," I chose to walk away from the show and our friendship in March 2010 after an angry confrontation between us at SXSW. At that point the show fell silent and stale - until the new episode with Bryce.

The show has (had?) great potential, but without reinventing the wheel I just don't see how Michael can continue stringing along podcasts about only a few topics: Star Wars, Star Trek, video games, and movies/music.

To really "get your geek on" (which is MY saying, by the way) one needs to think outside the realms of the definition of a stereotypical geek and look at today's world. I hope geekistry finds it's way to the place I once hoped it would be.

Incredibly Awesome!

Michael Gaines and Krissi B are fun to listen to, and talk about the things that us geeks love to talk about. Can't get enough of this podcast. I listen at work and during the drive in to work. Plus, I watch them live on UStream. Excellent show!!! Never a disappoint.
