VideoCaring for Both Parents and Children - Peggy, Maggie Lynn and Aggie | Aggie moved in with her daughter, Peggie, and her family including granddaughter, Maggie Lynn, after her husband passed away seven years ago. Shortly after she moved, Aggie had a debilitating stroke. Peggie is Aggie's primary caregiver, but she credits the love and support of her entire family as critically important factors in Aggie's recovery. Maggie Lynn is a teenager who admits that her mom's time and focus are divided because she is busy taking care of Aggie, but she's also grateful that her grandmother was able to come and live with them. Peggie's advice to other caregivers is, "Try to keep it light. Being able to laugh is very important. Also, talk to other people who have gone through--or are going through--the same thing. Support groups are great and online message boards are helpful when you can't go out to a meeting." | 1/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoThe Power of Caregiving In The Fight Against Cancer- Charlie and Bill | Bill has been battling cancer for 11 of the 18 years that he and Charlie have been together. Like most couples, Charlie and Bill hadn't thought much about something bad happening to one of them. "I was very healthy and then all of a sudden, at forty years old I got cancer...it was mindboggling," Bill says. Over the years there have been many ups and downs, but their ability to be honest with each other about their feelings has helped them to deal with the adversity. Charlie explains, "It's a rough road to try and hold it together emotionally and physically, while still being there for the person you love. But, you just find a way to do it. You feel bad that you are feeling things like guilt and regret and anger, but when you learn that those feelings are natural and normal, it's very liberating." Charlie is a staunch advocate for Bill with healthcare professionals, insurance personnel, and anyone else involved with his care. Bill says "Without him, I wouldn't be alive as long as I have been." | 1/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoLiving with Severe Asthma- Michelle and Gary | Michelle has been a severe asthmatic since the age of six. Her mother also suffered with asthma and died of an attack at an early age. Michelle talks about what it is like to live with the disease, how she deals with the fear, and what it was like to meet her husband, Gary, and help him learn about her condition. Gary says, "It was a challenge at first, but I focused on what a wonderful, beautiful person she is and that helped me get past the fear of what might happen. We've been married since 2003." His advice for other Caregivers is, "Once you accept the disease as a part of life and understand that this is a challenge you are taking on, don't ever give up. Deal with things one day at a time. And, have faith." | 1/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoCaring for a loved one with Multiple Systems Atrophy - Richard and Dorothy | Richard Sudhalter was a very well known international jazz musician, jazz historian, teacher, and author. Dorothy Kellogg is a former special events manager and is now an executive with a non-profit in New York City. They met in 1998 when Dorothy hired Richard for an event. Their life was filled with world travel, Richard's concerts, nights out at jazz clubs, and lots of romance and passion. Then, in 2003, Richard had a massive stroke. Thanks to his determination and Dorothy's care, he was initially able to recover. But, in 2006, Dorothy began to notice that Richard was having new and different health issues. After a year of testing, they discovered that he had a very rare form of Parkinson's disease called multiple symptom atrophy (MSA) that has no cure. Dorothy was Richard's primary caregiver until he passed away on September 19, 2008 in New York City. Dorothy's advice for other caregivers: "People who are caregivers have to go farther. They have to learn the symptoms and signs of their (loved ones) diseases. They have to become advocates, teachers, lecturers to everybody. And, most important, they have to have -- and keep -- their sense of humor." Donations in Richard's name are being accepted at www.jazzfoundation.org. | 1/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoCaring for an Autistic Child - Sharon and Ryan | Ryan is seven years old and Sharon is Ryan's mother. When Ryan was two, he was diagnosed with autism. Sharon says, "When we first got the diagnosis, we were devastated. But, we have found some excellent therapies that have really made a difference." Ryan can be easily overwhelmed, but understanding what drives his behavior has helped everyone who provides care for him. Sharon's family is her primary support system and other parents with autistic children are her best resource. She thinks a lot about what Ryan's future will be like and says, "There is a lot of help available now and there are a great therapies out there. Autism is not a death sentence for these kids. There is hope. There are things that work, so the most important advice I can give is, 'Don't give up.' I really do see a cure in our future." | 1/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes
VideoAlzheimer's and a Daughter's Love- Terry and Eva | Eva's daughter Terry first noticed something was "not quite right" with her mother in 2000. There were subtle changes in her behavior, but over time the changes became more serious. Eva would forget she had food on the stove and the fire department would arrive. She would leave her apartment, get lost, and need help to find her way home. Terry explained, "We had numerous appointments with many different types of doctors before we got an accurate diagnosis in 2002 when she was finally diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease." At first, Terry and her sister took turns having their mother live in each of their respective homes. But, as their mother's disease progressed, it became more and more difficult to balance taking care of her along with working and taking care of their own families. Terry admitted, "It was very difficult seeing our mother turn into a different person." It was also hard to find safe and appropriate care for her mother, but Eva is now able to live in her own apartment with home attendants who provide 24-hour care. Terry is Eva's Power of Attorney, pays all of her bills, and manages her care. She said, "It takes a lot of strength to see her like this and love her for who she is now. But, it's wonderful to be able to honor my mother in this way." Terry's advice to other caregivers who have a loved one with Alzheimer's: "Know how the disease works. Learn what goes on in the brain, what is expected, and study up on what the different stages of the disease are so you can prepare yourself." | 1/5/10 | Free | View In iTunes

Videocharity: water | charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations. For $20, we can give one person clean water for 20 years. In three years, we've funded 1,500+ water projects in 16 developing nations that, when completed, will provide more than 820,000 people with clean, safe drinking water. On Monday morning, in preparation for our annual gala, we ran our numbers and realized that in just over three years, we'd raised enough to give 970,000 people clean and safe drinking water. Our gala was only hours away. Our staff was nervous, excited, scared, exhausted and happy. We knew that when the 4th annual charity: ball was over, we just might be able to serve our first million people. A milestone for sure. We had created many opportunities that night to raise money for water projects, but we knew the only chance we'd have to reach the million mark would come during the Live Auction. Shortly after 9 p.m. the evening's host, Adrian Grenier, took the stage and spoke about his dedication to ending the water crisis. Founder Scott Harrison recapped the year and gushed with thanks.Behind them was a giant map of Africa with enough unfunded water projects to get us to a million people served. The Live Auction was about to begin. And then, a big surprise. Before the auctioneers took the stage, Bebo founder Michael Birch and his family shocked everyone. They announced they'd match all donations up to $1 million for staff and operations, helping us continue our 100% promise. We could hardly believe it. Even more was at stake now. The gavel slammed to get things started, and a donor immediately gave $50,000 to bring water to schools in Sierra Leone. Another gave $50,000 to bring water to health clinics in Ethiopia. Hands shot up and audience members cheered as donors flooded the stage to press lit buttons and write their initials next to the water projects they had just funded. $20,000 gifts. $10,000. $5,000, $2,500. Strangers chipped in, partnering with one another to build wells. And then it was over. The lights were lit, and the map was covered in the initials of those who'd given... To our amazement, in about 30 minutes, we'd secured enough funding to serve our first million people with clean and safe drinking water. Your support brought us here, and your support will carry our vision forward. Know that we start a new decade with the next million people in our sights and in our hearts. On behalf of the first million people you've helped, thank you. Have a wonderful holiday season. -The charity: water team | 12/17/09 | Free | View In iTunes

VideoAng Lee | Good News was honored to attend our partner's, The National Arts Club, Medal of Honor event with Ang Lee and James Schamus, President of Focus Films. The Club always has special events that capture the people of the world “doing good”. This event is important to Good News Broadcast, in that we are currently finalizing a 20-year movie project, Woodstock: Forever, that will be released in 2010. With the success of Taking Woodstock, which was created by Focus Films, we were excited to see the National Arts Club give awards to Ang and James. Our affiliation with Taking Woodstock runs deep, as our associate, Phil Sauers, was involved in its creation, and his son David Sauers was Associate Producer. Congratulations to Ang and James at Focus Films as Good News wishes you much continued success.DIRECTOR ANG LEE AND PRODUCER/SCREENWRITER JAMES SCHAMUS RECEIVE THE NATIONAL ART CLUB’S MEDAL OF HONOR FOR FILM ON NOVEMBER 18, 2009 (New York) November 19, 2009—Last night, director Ang Lee and producer/screenwriter James Schamus were honored by The National Arts Club’s Film Committee for their achievement in the film industry at a black tie dinner held at the historic Gramercy Park members-only club. In attendance to help celebrate their success were actresses Sigourney Weaver and Christina Ricci, who both gave speeches about working with the honorees, actress/National Arts Club member Carroll Baker, playwright Christopher Durang and Gossip Girl star/National Arts Club member Matthew Settle. Professor Annette Insdorf of Columbia University’s Graduate Film Program and WNYC radio talk show host Leonard Lopate were also among the evening’s guest speakers. Known for their successful ground-breaking films such as Brokeback Mountain (2005), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Sense and Sensibility (1995), The National Arts Club’s Film committee chose to honor the creative duo for their ability to work together to bring about films that have repeatedly raised the bar for fellow-filmmakers. "It is rare that we get to honor such a unique creative team,” says Dary Day Derchin, Chair of the NAC’s Film Committee. “No other filmmakers have crossed cultural boundaries so brilliantly.” Sigourney Weaver and Christina Ricci both spoke of their respect and admiration for Lee and Schamus and shared their memories of working with the duo on the set of the 1997 film The Ice Storm. Weaver admitted that when she first met with Lee to discuss the film, which is about a moral deterioration taking place in suburbia during the 1970s, she thought that it was a comedy. “To this day, I still think that it is a comedy… only you have to have a dark sense of humor,” said Weaver. Ricci, on the other hand, referenced the great amount of patience that both Lee and Schamus had when working with the angry and stubborn 15-year-old version of herself. “I was 15, angry and to be honest, had no idea what the film was about,” said Ricci, who turned heads in a gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress. National Arts Club President O. Aldon James Jr. presented Lee and Schamus with the gold medal, officially making both men the newest members of The National Arts Club. They join the esteemed ranks of previous Film Committee honorees including Cliff Robertson, Sylvia Sydney, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Aiello, Lynn Redgrave, Olympia Dukakis and Norman Jewison. Perhaps best known for their work on the film Brokeback Mountain, which allowed for Taiwan-born director Ang Lee to become the first Asian to win an Academy Award for Best Director, Lee and Schamus have received much praise from critics and their peers for their work as an internationally- recognized creative team. Their films, including the recent Taking Woodstock, has enabled them to work with a group of outstanding actors including Anne Hathaway, Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Heath Ledger, Michelle Yeaoh, Ziyi Zhang, Yun-Fat Chow, Sigourney Weaver, | 12/8/09 | Free | View In iTunes

Even in this economy, most of us will experience the joys of the holiday season with shopping, travel, parties and family get togethers! Its hard to imagine that just across the globe 1,500,000 children are suffering many orphaned due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic plaguing the impoverished nation of Malawi, Africa, one of the most densely populated countries on the continent. The national rate of infection results in 85,000 deaths from AIDS each year—enough people to fill an average stadium. HIV/AIDS has had a particularly devastating impact on children who have lost both parents to the disease. Orphans and vulnerable children have no one to turn to for guidance when dealing with harsh living conditions. Youth of Malawi Inc. is a Non-Profit Corporation dedicated to enriching the lives of the young people of Malawi, Africa. The groups mission is to provide the youth of this impoverished nation with recreational activities to brighten their lives. Malawi Beach Party will be a 2 day adventure bringing children from rural Malawi to Lake Malawi for the first time in their lives for a day of swimming, games, food, music and love! Though these orphans live only two hours from the beach, they have never experienced it. This experience is aimed to further their social development and help promote a more positive outlook on life. Listeners can sponsor a child for just $39.00, which will buy transportation, a knapsack, sunglasses, a towel, lunch, admission to the beach and pool, beach toys, floaties and polaroid pics to take home. The sponsor will then receive a picture and/or note from a child attending the trip. Youth of Malawi needs your help! Jon Biondo is available to discuss how your listeners can help find corporate sponsors or make a financial donation as well as discuss the devastating issues impacting Malawi including: · HIV/AIDS + Disease: A generation of parents lost to the rampant epidemic of HIV/AIDS. · Poverty: Desperately poor rural living conditions isolated by primitive infrastructure and overcrowded peri-urban slums · Orphans: 1,500,000 orphaned and vulnerable children in dire need of basic care. · Children's Mental Health: Children have no one to turn to for guidance when dealing with harsh living conditions. · Education: Scarce educational resources and opportunities, especially for girls. | 22 | VideoDa Ming Palace (Part 1 of 2) | Xian Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park - The Ambassador of China and the Mayor of Xian hosted an historic luncheon event for Xian Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park, dubbed Central Park. Held at the United Nations on 9/9/09, the audience saw the United Nations premiere of Da Ming Palace, directed by Jin Tiemu as well as a Tang Dynasty Fashion Show. Xian is a cultural capital in China. Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park will open in October of 2010.For centuries Da Ming Palace was the centre of the Tang Dynastys supreme power, and as far as the Chinese were concerned, the centre of the world. It was three times the size of la Palais de Versailles, four times as large as the Forbidden City, and twelve times as big as the Kremlin. It was an architectural miracle, dwarfing everything in northwestern China as a testament to the power and glory of that age. As a Chinese poem of the time proclaimed:It seems as if built by gods; every state should kneel down in front of it. But this imperial palace of the Tang Empire (618907AD) was no more. In 904 AD, nearly three hundred years after its construction, Da Ming Palace was completely destroyed in a savage fire, its legend buried beneath the rubble. Now an epic film brings that legend to life once again. The movie Da Ming Palace is based on the work of Chinese and Japanese archaeologists who for over 50 years have scoured the ruins of the palace for insights into imperial life during one of Chinas greatest eras.Using 3-D digital reconstruction of the palace and dramatic reenactment, documentary maker Jin Tiemu takes us back to Da Ming Palaces heyday. Its the story of the first and only empress of China, Wu Zetian, who developed the palace into an architectural marvel. Here she granted audience to her officials and guests from foreign countries, some of whom remained as pampered hostages, to improve Chinas political leverage. Da Ming Palace reached its apex of luxury when Wu Zetians grandson, Emperor Li Longji seized the throne in 712 AD. Under his supervision, the palace grew in stature as lavish alterations were made. The palace became the centre of politics and art in Chinas golden age. But the old emperor fell in love with his charming daughter-in-law. This love affair was to trigger a series of disasters for the Tang Empire culminating in bloody warfare and the destruction of the Palace. The place where courtesans and concubines had knelt at the feet of successive emperors for hundreds of years disappeared from history. The palace no longer exists, but its legend is resurrected in Jin Tiemus remarkable documentary Da Ming Palace.Part 2 of 2: http://www.goodnewsbroadcast.com/index.php/component/content/article/96-chinese/117175-daming-palace-part-2-of-2 | 11/29/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
VideoDa Ming Palace (Part 2 of 2) | Xian Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park - The Ambassador of China and the Mayor of Xian hosted an historic luncheon event for Xian Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park, dubbed Central Park. Held at the United Nations on 9/9/09, the audience saw the United Nations premiere of Da Ming Palace, directed by Jin Tiemu as well as a Tang Dynasty Fashion Show. Xian is a cultural capital in China. Da Ming Palace National Heritage Park will open in October of 2010. For centuries Da Ming Palace was the centre of the Tang Dynastys supreme power, and as far as the Chinese were concerned, the centre of the world. | 24 | VideoTarrytown Lakes | The Tarrytown Lakes. Good News speaks to concerned citizens and the Mayor of Tarrytown on what can be done to keep the lakes clean. The Good News is that there are many who want to make this happen. The Tarrytown Lakes were originally used to provide water for the village of Tarrytown. With it's own pumping station, the village had an independent water supply for many years. In the late 1980s, the pumping station needed some repairs. The village made the decision to begin buying water from New York City. The beautiful lakes that are a centerpiece of the village, fell into neglect due to the stagnation of the water. Fast forward over 20 years later and some concerned citizens are trying to get the pump station to its original function. To just "mothball" the building, put a roof on it and close it up so it does not crumble any further, the costs would be about $ 45,000. This is Phase I of the project. In the report drawings for a new restored building - coming in at about $6.5 million, give or take depending on the details, etc. Ideally we would like to have it be a LEEDS certified building, restored with sustainable materials (solar panels, geothermal heating, etc.) so it is an example for the community of how to do things the right way! Of course this is a bit more costly up front, but on the back end the operating expenses would be reduced considerably. There is a thought to make it a water and environmental museum. Good News Broadcast would like to do shows from the facility for our series “The Water Hour”. | 11/24/09 | Free | View In iTunes
