CleanLDS Internet Dating: Valentines Special 1 of 4 | Show Notes Dallin H. Oaks: “The best way to avoid divorce from an unfaithful, abusive, or unsupportive spouse is to avoid marriage to such a person. If you wish to marry well, inquire well. Associations through ‘hanging out’ or exchanging information on the Internet are not a sufficient basis for marriage. There should be dating, followed by careful and thoughtful and thorough courtship. There should be ample opportunities to experience the prospective spouse’s behavior in a variety of circumstances." Dallin H. Oaks, “Divorce,” Ensign, May 2007, 73 Points Discussed During In This Episode If you are under eighteen, don’t even attempt online dating of any kind. CleanWHEN is Christ Coming? …Oh, and a bit about Mayan Calendars | Listen to WHEN is Christ Coming? ...and a bit about Mayan calendars Show Notes: And now we only wait to hear the joyful news declared unto us by the mouth of angels, of his coming; for the time cometh, we know not how soon. Would to God that it might be in my day; but let it be sooner or later, in it I will rejoice. (Alma 13:25) When will Jesus Christ come back? I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following: Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter. I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face. I believe the coming of the Son of Man will not be any sooner than that time. (D&C 130:14-17) I, the Lord God, have spoken it; but the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes. (D&C 49:7) Joseph Smith: Jesus Christ never did reveal to any man the precise time that He would come. Go and read the Scriptures, and you cannot find anything that specifies the exact hour He would come; and all that say so are false teachers.” History of the Church, 6:254. He doesn't want us to know the date of His coming, but has provided His own way of telling us about how soon Christ will come. And he that believeth shall be blest with signs following, even as it is written. And unto you it shall be given to know the signs of the times, and the signs of the coming of the Son of Man;” (D&C 68:10-11) And again, it shall come to pass that on as many as ye shall baptize with water, ye shall lay your hands, and they shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and shall be looking forth for the signs of my coming, and shall know me. (D&C 39: 23) The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring, O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? (Matt 16:1-4) And I will show it plainly as I showed it unto my disciples as I stood before them in the flesh, and spake unto them, saying: As ye have asked of me concerning the signs of my coming, in the day when I shall come in my glory in the clouds of heaven, to fulfill the promises that I have made unto your fathers, (D&C 45:16) President Wilford Woodruff: If the world wants to know what is coming to pass, let them read the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants; let them read [the] revelations of St. John. As God lives they will come to pass. Not one of them will fall unfulfilled. And the hand of God is beginning to be manifest in the earth. Judgment is at the door; calamity awaits the nations of the earth; but we ourselves should be prepared to stand in holy places while the judgments of God are manifest in the earth. We are living in a late age, although it is true there are a great many vast and important events to transpire in these days. But one thing is certain, though the Lord has not revealed the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man shall come, he has pointed out the generation, and the signs predicted as the fore-runners of that great event have begun to appear in the heavens and on the earth, and they will continue until all is consummated. If we, as Latter-day Saints, want anything to stir us up, let us read the Bible, Book of Mormon and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants; they contain enough to edify and instruct us in the things of God. Treasure up the revelations of God and the gospel of Christ contained therein. Wilford Woodruff, | 1/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanIdeas for Making Christmas More Meaningful | Listen to Ideas for Making Christmas More Meaningful Show Notes: Ideas by Annette P. Bowen, from the Article, Avoiding a Very Harried Christmas, from the December 1990 Ensign: Ideas for simplifying your Christmas Season Start early—getting the shopping done by Thanksgiving is worth more than all the pennies saved Simplify your plans—eliminate any unnecessary things from your December calendar Let the music ring—it really is okay to like Christmas music. Get a Spotify or Pandora account Slow down! Spend time loving your own family http://lds.org/ensign/1990/12/avoiding-a-very-harried-christmas?lang=eng From Ensign November 1995 Random Sampler: Service Oriented Ideas Go caroling. If getting your family around is too much, do some digital caroling Invite a lonely person to join you for Christmas dinner and other celebrations Secretly deliver treats or gifts to someone in your neighborhood. Do a spiritually centered 12 Days of Christmas Volunteer at a local charitable organization. Visit a nursing home or other care facility. Family Oriented Ideas Let paper chains, straws in the manger, or other ornaments represent the good deeds of family members. Exchange some gifts of service rather than store-bought presents exclusively. For family home evening, have each family member tell a favorite Christmas story from the scriptures, Church magazines, or other sources. Listen to Christmas carols together as you bake, clean, and prepare for the holidays. Worshipful Ideas Display a picture of Christ or a nativity scene in a prominent place in the home. Read as a family the biblical accounts of Christ’s birth as well as the account in the Book of Mormon (see Hel. 14, Hel. 16; 3 Ne. 1). Act out the story of Christ’s birth. Discuss the spiritual meanings of Christmas symbols. Spend time naming and giving thanks for gifts from Heavenly Father. http://lds.org/ensign/1995/12/random-sampler/christ-centered-traditions?lang=eng Decorating Ideas Have a tree of life Christmas tree Draw or paint your own nativity as a family Other Ideas Read some of the less traditional accounts of Christ's birth: In addition to Luke 2 and Matt 2, read 1 Nephi 12, Helaman 13, and 3 Nephi 1. Or go to the Topical Guide, look up Jesus Christ, Birth of, and read the verses listed Have a devotional where each family member shares what they are going to give Heavenly Father for Christmas Have a family (maybe even extended family) testimony meeting. Share or write them down. Talk about the Savior's second coming WARNING: DON'T try to do all of these ideas. Just pick one or a few. The idea is not to make the season busier, but more meaningful and Christ-centered. | 12/18/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanInterview with Misty Moncur, Author of Daughter of Helaman | Listen to Interview with Misty Moncur Show Notes: Misty Moncur is the author of the LDS novel, Daughter of Helaman. As her bio on her website, http://mistymoncur.blogspot.com/ states, Misty fits in writing like other people fit in breathing. She writes in the Romance, Young Adult, and Religious genres. Misty lives in Utah with her husband, her Wii-addicted son, and her curly-haired daughter. They spend a great deal of time laughing and the rest of it eating pizza . Questions discussed in the Interview: What gave you the idea of creating a young woman who is interested in joining Helaman's army of 2000 young men? I noticed that Keturah has a very strong view of gender roles. Was that difficult to write into the Nephite culture? What kind of research did you have to do in order to write about day-to-day living in Nephite times? There are probably many members of the church that would like to study more about what Nephite life may have been like. What sources or tools would you recommend? Was there anything about the history or characters in the story that you didn't include in the book (deleted scenes, unwritten backstory, etc)? The book is obviously intended for an LDS audience. What do you hope members of the church get from Daughter of Helaman? How did writing this book effect your testimony of the Book of Mormon? What got you started in writing? How did you get from an interest in writing to actually starting your first book? Was the task harder or easier than you expected? What do you recommend to other writers who would like to write a book, but haven't started yet? What's next? Sequel? Do you have another book underway? Any advice or suggestions you would like to give new writers? | 12/4/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanInspiring Creativity in Young Children | Listen to Inspiring Creativity in Young Children Show Notes: Dieter F. Uchtdorf: "The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before. Everyone can create." Uchtdorf, “Happiness, Your Heritage,” Ensign, Nov 2008, 117–20 Points discussed in the podcast: The Power of Improvisation . . .and there is nothing that the Lord thy God shall take in his heart to do but what he will do it. (Abraham 3:17) Improvisation is at the heart of creativity. Not just with music, but with story-invention, art, comedy, Ideas to promote creative improvisation in young children Find pictures in the clouds Make toys and stuffed animals talk When they want to color, give him a blank page instead of a coloring book Have a storytelling chair, rug, or table Have dances, especially where they come up with their own dance moves Problem-Solving is also a major aspect of creativity Ideas to promote problem-solving skills in young children: Don't volunteer solutions. Wait for her to ask. When she asks for solutions, don't offer them. Ask her, “What do you think you should do?” If she gets frustrated or can't find an answer, help her discover clues, hints, or get ideas from other children her age or younger. Don't let her seek answers from older kids. Offer encouragement. Say, “You can do it! I know you can!” Don't volunteer ideas—except as a last resort. Points to keep in mind This is NOT the age to critique your child's work. This is the age to praise and motivate. (You aren't trained for critiquing for most subjects anyway) Though it's good to praise your child by saying, “You are so good at. . .” it's sometimes better to praise his growth and effort by saying something like, “You are learning so much! I love how you work so hard on your picture.” That way the expectation is not in the end product, but in the effort and heart your child put into it. Other Ideas to Promote Creativity Let them see you being creative, and let them model what you do (don't push it on them, just allow them to emulate it). Likewise, color with them. Dance with them, etc. Give your children opportunities to see close friends and family being creative. Aunts, uncles, cousins, can all be major influences for creativity in kids. Have creative items around, such as musical instruments, crayons, paper, and so forth. Let your kids help you make meals, plant gardens, and fix things. Tell kids they are creative, and that they are getting more creative every day. Kids believe almost everything their parents tell them, and when they believe it, they will act on it. | 11/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKiddoes | Kiddoes Jenni and I have decided to try focusing the podcast on various topics, instead of having many podcasts on one topic - just to see how that goes. This time we focused on Children James E. Faust: If parents do not discipline their children and teach them to obey, society may discipline them in a way neither the parents nor the children will like. Dr. Lee Salk, child psychologist, said: “The ‘do your own thing’ trend has interfered with people developing close and trusting family relationships. It tells people that they are neurotic if they feel a sense of responsibility for the feelings of other family members. People are also told to let all their feelings out, even if it is very hurtful to someone else.” (Special Section Families, U.S. News and World Report, Inc., 16 June 1980, p. 60.) As Dr. Salk states, this is, of course, patently wrong. Without discipline and obedience in the home, the unity of the family collapses. Anne G. Wirthlin: Recent research on the development of a child’s brain has revealed new insights into how and when a child learns. I quote from a recent study: “From birth, a baby’s brain cells proliferate wildly, making connections that may shape a lifetime of experience. The first three years are critical” (J. Madeleine Nash, “Fertile Minds,” Time, 3 Feb. 1997, 49). Anne G. Wirthlin, “Teaching Our Children to Love the Scriptures,” Ensign, May 1998, 9 Anne G. Wirthlin: When first we love the Lord with all our hearts, then we can lead our children to Him in all of our interactions. They will grow in their devotion to the Lord as they see our devotion to Him. They will understand the power of prayer as they hear us pray to a loving Heavenly Father who is there listening and answering our prayers. They will understand faith as they see us live by faith. And they will learn the power of love by the kind and respectful ways that we relate to them. We cannot teach truth to our children apart from the trusting, caring relationships that we have with them. President Howard W. Hunter said, “A successful parent is one who has loved, one who has sacrificed, and one who has cared for, taught, and ministered to the needs of a child” (Ensign, Nov. 1983, p. 65). Anne G. Wirthlin, “Touch the Hearts of the Children,” Ensign, Nov 1995, 81 Neal A. Maxwell: Children often have the “thoughts and [the] intents of [their] hearts” focused on the Master. Though not full of years, such children are full of faith! Too young for formal Church callings, they have been “called to serve” as exemplifiers, doing especially well when blessed with “goodly parents” (1 Ne. 1:1). Just as the scriptures assure, “little children do have words given unto them many times” (Alma 32:23). For example, the resurrected Jesus revealed things to the Nephite children, who then taught adults and their parents “even greater” things than Jesus had taught (3 Ne. 26:14). It has been a privilege to seal several adopted children to Nan and Dan Barker, now of Arizona. Some time ago Nate, then just over three, said: “Mommy, there is another little girl who is supposed to come to our family. She has dark hair and dark eyes and lives a long way from here.” The wise mother asked, “How do you know this?” "Jesus told me, upstairs.” The mother noted, “We don’t have an upstairs,” but quickly sensed the significance of what had been communicated. After much travail and many prayers, the Barker family were in a sealing room in the Salt Lake Temple in the fall of 1995—where a little girl with dark hair and dark eyes, from Kazakhstan, was sealed to them for time and eternity. Inspired children still tell parents “great and marvelous things” (3 Ne. 26:14). Benjamin Ballam is the special spina bifida child of Michael and Laurie Ballam. He has been such a blessing to them and many others. Also spiritually precocious, Benjamin is a constant source of love and reassurance. Having had | 1/16/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanThe Flexing of Instincts | Flexing of Instincts Music, Art, and Media Series A of F 13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. Ezra Taft Benson: Remember Elder Boyd K. Packer’s statement: “Music, once … innocent, now is often used for wicked purposes. … “In our day music itself has been corrupted. Music can, by its tempo, by its beat, by its intensity [and I would add by its lyrics], dull the spiritual sensitivity of men. … “Young people,” Elder Packer goes on to say, “you cannot afford to fill your mind with the unworthy hard music of our day.” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1973, pp. 21, 25; or Ensign, Jan. 1974, pp. 25, 28.) Instead, we encourage you to listen to uplifting music, both popular and classical, that builds the spirit. Learn some favorite hymns from our new hymnbook that build faith and spirituality. Attend dances where the music and the lighting and the dance movements are conducive to the Spirit. Watch those shows and entertainment that lift the spirit and promote clean thoughts and actions. Read books and magazines that do the same. Ezra Taft Benson, “To the ‘Youth of the Noble Birthright’,” Ensign, May 1986, 43 Elder Neal A. Maxwell: "Ever wonder why the sensual scene so often features flashing but fading lights? Or why all the reinforcing glitz? Or why all the loudness masquerading as music? Because, fearful of the dawn, evil cannot stand the steady scrutiny of bright truth, nor can it endure the quiet reflections of soul-searching!" Ensign, Nov 2001 D&C 88:28-40 28 They who are of a celestial spirit shall receive the same body which was a natural body; even ye shall receive your bodies, and your glory shall be that glory by which your bodies are quickened. 29 Ye who are quickened by a portion of the celestial glory shall then receive of the same, even a fulness. 30 And they who are quickened by a portion of the terrestrial glory shall then receive of the same, even a fulness. 31 And also they who are quickened by a portion of the telestial glory shall then receive of the same, even a fulness. 32 And they who remain shall also be quickened; nevertheless, they shall return again to their own place, to enjoy that which they are willing to receive, because they were not willing to enjoy that which they might have received. 33 For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift. 34 And again, verily I say unto you, that which is governed by law is also preserved by law and perfected and sanctified by the same. 35 That which breaketh a law, and abideth not by law, but seeketh to become a law unto itself, and willeth to abide in sin, and altogether abideth in sin, cannot be sanctified by law, neither by mercy, justice, nor judgment. Therefore, they must remain filthy still. 36 All kingdoms have a law given; 37 And there are many kingdoms; for there is no space in the which there is no kingdom; and there is no kingdom in which there is no space, either a greater or a lesser kingdom. 38 And unto every kingdom is given a law; and unto every law there are certain bounds also and conditions. 39 All beings who abide not in those conditions are not justified. 40 For intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom; truth embraceth truth; virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light; mercy hath compassion on mercy and claimeth her own; justice continueth its course and claimeth its own; judgment goeth before the face of him who sitteth upon the throne and governeth and executeth all things. CleanHymnology | Hymnology Music, Art, and Media Series Bible Dictionary: Music The Nourishing Power of Hymns, Jay E. Jensen Matt 26:29-30 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. D&C 25:11-12 And it shall be given thee, also, to make a selection of sacred hymns, as it shall be given thee, which is pleasing unto me, to be had in my church. For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads. Richard G. Scott: Good music, especially sacred music, makes spiritual things more understandable. It is edifying and conducive to willing obedience. It prepares emotions for response to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Stay away from the poison of evil music. To Acquire Knowledge and the Strength to Use It Wisely, BYU devotional, 23 January 2001 Merrill J. Bateman: Elder Merrill J. Bateman: This story concerns a young girl, the fourth child in a family of six children. Her name is Heather. Three of the children, including Heather, suffered from a rare disease called glutaric acidemia. In each case, the onset of the disease occurred during the first year of life when an enzyme attacked the brain, causing paralysis. The disease results in acid forming in the muscles similar to that which occurs following a period of intense physical activity. The problem faced by the children was that the acid never leaves and causes great pain. Cindy, the first child with the disease, died at the age of 23. She was one of the oldest living persons known with the disease. At death she weighed about 40 pounds. Soon after Heather’s birth, the parents realized that she would be physically handicapped and that her spirit would be housed in a body with great restrictions. As she grew, she was confined to a wheelchair, was unable to speak, and could send messages only with her eyes. A direct gaze and a smile meant yes. A blink meant no. Despite the handicaps, one could feel her vibrant spirit. As Heather progressed, it became obvious to her parents that she was extraordinarily bright. She would play guessing games with the family using her limited means to communicate. When she was old enough, the parents enrolled Heather in a special school to see if she could learn to speak. The teacher was a gifted therapist. One morning as Heather and the teacher visited about the prior weekend, the teacher learned that Heather had attended Primary. The teacher then sang for Heather “When He Comes Again.” 10 The expression on Heather’s face revealed the delight within her. When the teacher asked Heather if she had a favorite song, the young girl’s wide eyes and engaging smile left little doubt. But what was the song? Through a series of questions, the teacher learned that Heather’s song was one she had heard in Primary. She wasn’t sure which songbook it was in, but it was about Jesus. The teacher sang all the songs she could think of, but to no avail. However, Heather was not about to quit; she wanted to share her favorite song. At the end of the day, the two were still searching. The teacher agreed to bring her songbooks to school the next day. On the following morning, Heather and her teacher continued the quest. Delightful
Delightful podcast by a young latter-day saint married couple sharing their feelings about the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Love it! :)
Chaz and Jenny are an adorable LDS couple. Their testimonies are strong, the topics they choose are timely, and the articles they read as well as their comments on them really bring the Spirit to the listener. My favorite podcast so far. :)
