Greendays Gardening | Remembering Maurice Sendak: Children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak died today at the age of 83. If you were born after 1960, you probably grew up reading his books. His 1963 book "Where the Wild Things Are" changed the children's book genre and made his career. Around here, Sendak is also known for the beautiful and complex hand–painted sets he created for Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker." We talk to PNB's founding Artistic Director Kent Stowell about his collaboration with Sendak. 'Weekday' Archive — 'The Accidental Slaveowner:' Conflicting myths exist about "Miss Kitty," a former slave who lived in antebellum Georgia. To whites in the area, Kitty was a dedicated servant who stayed loyal to her Methodist Bishop slave master even after she was freed. But blacks claimed Miss Kitty was actually held in sexual servitude for years. Anthropologist Mark Auslander went in search of the true story of Miss Kitty. Greendays Gardening Panel: Pledge Drive Edition | Putting A Price On Wrongful Conviction: In Washington state, prisoners who have been wrongly convicted get little more than their freedom once they've been exonerated. Since they didn't serve out their sentence and aren't guilty of a crime, they are ineligible for programs to reintroduce them to society. There's also no financial compensation for their time spent behind bars. A bill introduced in the state legislature this year aimed to change that by calling for the state to pay $50,000 per year to wrongfully convicted prisoners, but it died in committee. Please! Please! Please! Continue to keep these coming. I did not start gardening until after Mr. Elliot retired. His advice is every bit as valuable from an archive as it was to you when you heard it "fresh". There are so many people who are just learning to get around the podcast world. Please give them a chance to find this show. I listen to several Garden podcasts, and this one is one of the absolute best!
