Podcast Description
The Pursuing A Balanced Life podcast was originally launched in March of 2006 as the “My Crazy Life” podcast. The original concept was for this to be my, Cliff Ravenscraft’s, daily audio journal. It was simply a place for me to share my thoughts on any topics that were on my mind where I didn’t already have another podcast devoted to those topics. In May of 2009, I made a decision, after nearly 400 episodes, to rebrand and rename the podcast to Pursuing A Balanced Life. Over the years, it became obvious, from the feedback I was receiving, that this podcast had become extremely inspirational to people as they followed me on my personal journey of finding a balance between my focus on my career, my desire to be a great husband and father, my desire to become more physically fit and healthy, and to live a life of faith.

512 PABL – Off To The Hospital To Get Checked Out | Click Here For The Latest - Update #7 - Final Update Update #1 January 7, 2012 2:40 PM - So here I am. I am sitting in my office/studio and I am packing up my briefcase with all my tech gear for what could be a few hours, days, or potentially weeks at my local hospital. I don't mean to alarm anyone by my first post here, but on Thursday morning, I had experienced a twitch/spasm in my left eye. I've had these in the past and they were typically due to stress or going extended periods of time without having enough sleep. The thing is, however, that I have been getting plenty of sleep lately and haven't been experiencing much stress due to the successful steps of adding so much more margin to my life. By the end of the day, Thursday, the eye spasms continued and I assumed that perhaps I was experiencing some subconscious stress or fear about sharing a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT about the future of the content here at gspn.tv. If you haven't yet heard about that, you can read and hear all about that by clicking here. I wasn't too worried. I was a bit surprised, but the feedback from the announcement has been 100% positive so far. Sure, some folks have expressed a bit of sadness that some shows were no longer going to be produced, but everyone had shared that they understood the reasons that I had shared and I'd say that well over 99% have shared that they were extremely optimistic about what this means for the content that will continue as we move forward. I also figured that if my left eye spasms were somehow tied to that stress, that they would go away over night. However, Friday morning, I woke up and began to work on the various items that I had laid out for myself on my to do list. I am going to insert here that I forgot to tell you that I had an issue where I slept on my left arm the wrong way. I had a bit of pain in my shoulder when I moved my left arm around. I also figured this would go away. Back to Friday.. I was sitting here working and I noticed that I started to feel a little bit of "numbness/tingling" from the tips of my fingers up through my arm, in through my shoulder and into the area right behind my left side of my chest cage. It was more like a "sensation." This didn't bother me much at all. I thought maybe I had a pinched nerve. About 11am on Friday, January 6th, I noticed that the left side of my check and lips started to have a numbness sensation as well. Almost as though I was just at the end of having novocaine from a dental visit wearing off. Though, it was very much limited precisely to the left side of my mouth and face. These were the only symptoms that I had experienced and I was having no problem thinking clearly. In fact, I spent most of the day working on things like my new consulting page on my business website. I didn't have any issues with dropping facial features, no slurred speech, no headaches, no problem with balance, and no problem writing or understanding human speech. I didn't tell Stephanie about this until it had been going on for several hours. Though, I will share that I had experienced other symptoms of things before this and the eye spasms on Thursday. In a future update, I will share more about what I had experienced and why I never shared it with ANYONE. I had asked Stephanie to simply keep an eye on my through the day yesterday and I promised if I thought it was getting any worse, I would immediately agree to go to the hospital. It never got worse and so I never went to the hospital. This morning, I woke up feeling no worse that I did yesterday. In fact, I feel just fine. Though I can still tell that there is the "VERY SLIGHTEST SENSATION" on just the left side of my body. It don't know if I would call it numbness or tingling, but just something that doesn't feel like it should and it is exactly ONLY ON THE LEFT SIDE of my body. This afternoon, I reached out to my friend Robert Johnson. | 1/7/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

511 PABL – Awesome Advisors And So Much More! | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share what has been going on, in my mind, as it related to what I had read up to that point in the book "E-Myth Revisited." I think it is important to point out that, a few days after recording this, I had finished the book. The final chapters of the book had an incredible amount of insightful content when it comes to structuring the organization of your business. I came away enjoying this book a great deal more, though I don't agree with such statements, made by the author, that the only real reason to start a business is to ultimately sell it. I also shared how thankful I am for the awesome advisers that I have in my life. I'm surrounded by a great number of amazingly successful people and I know that a great deal of my success and motivation is directly tied to my relationship with these amazing people. I shared quite a bit more in this episode as well. However, I recorded it several days ago and I am having a difficult time remembering some of the other topics I brought up. I hope you enjoy! 510 PABL – When Is Urgent Not Important? | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I answer the question that was asked by @hbgreg on Twitter where he wrote "When is urgent not important?" I do a bit of rehashing some of what I shared in episode 509 about the time management lessons I learned from chapter 3 of Dave Ramsey's EntreLeadership Book. It seems that a lot of people are struggling with the idea of discerning the difference between urgent tasks and important tasks. Personally, I think the struggle is more between discerning the tasks that are "important and urgent" (Quadrant 1) v/s the tasks that are "not important and urgent" (Quadrant 3). I don't have all the answers to this figured out, but I have spent the past full week organizing my day around the concepts that I learned from chapter three fo EntreLeadership. I can tell you that, without a doubt, it has had a profound positive impact on the amount of IMPORTANT WORK that I completed in the past seven days. By the way, in this episode, I shared how I took five days to respond to my single most important client as a result of his email not making it to the top of my to do list during those five days. Here's what I wrote to him..... Why it has taken so long, (Read this section only if interested - Otherwise Skip To Next Section) I'm so sorry for taking five days to respond to your email. I'd like to give credit to Dave Ramsey, as I've been reading EntreLeadership and in chapter three, he discussed time management. I must admit that I've been hard at work at taking a deep look at the tasks that I do and then categorize them into four quadrants. Quadrant 1 - Important and Urgent Quadrant 2 - Important and Not Urgent Quadrant 3 - Not Important and Urgent Quadrant 4 - Not Important and Not Urgent I've been spending about 15 minutes each day trying to organize my day's to do list based up on these categories, trying to fit in as many Q1 and Q2 tasks as possible and then I prioritize my list based upon how Dave shared in the rest of that chapter. Having well over 100 emails that had built up from my West Coast trip, "manage email" has hovered around an A5 to A7 task. Previously, I'd try to capture the ever elusive email "Inbox Zero" and would have responded to your email within a few short hours. There is a part of me that is excited that I'm just getting to this email today, as the tasks that I've worked on these past five days have been EPIC on the scale of importance, especially the ones that were "Important But Not Urgent." However, when I come to an email like this, there is a part of me that wanders if there isn't a way to do this to were some folks get priority treatment when it comes to responding to an email. I'm working on it. The email then continued on to respond to the URGENT request for help that he wrote to me about five days earlier. A request for assistance that I was then, at the time of responding to the email, four days too late to fulfill. Want to know how this client responded? The following email response came in, this morning, after I had finished recording this episode. He wrote back and said.... Thanks for your note here. Hey I understand totally about prioritizing your time. As you become more and more successful that will increase as an absolute necessity. ... I have removed portion of email pertaining to the topic we were discussing ... I so appreciate your willingness to add your expertise to my ongoing work here. There you go my friends. You see, this client, my single most important client wrote back and said that it was no problem that I did not fulfill his request to be available for his urgent request. Instead of being angry or let down, he reinforced my decision to "Do The Work That Counts" by saying that as I become more and more successful, the need to do this will increase as an absolute necessity. In the episode, I quoted Peter Shallard's post where wrote, "Shun the urgent. | 11/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

501 PABL – The People I Am Blessed To Work With | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share how excited I am about redesigning my work space in the gspn.tv studio, aka my office. I didn't intend to go on and on about the details for as long as I did, but I hope that this episode inspires you to consider your own work space. Is your work environment encouraging creativity in your work? I also shared how I have recently been blessed and encouraged by my interactions with a total of six people this week. I was recently interviewed for an article by Randy Sly of http://Catholic.org and I was interviwed by Mark Mason for his podcasts. Once those pieces of content are put online, I'll be sure to provide links to them in the future. 500 PABL – The Balancing Act Continues After 500 Episodes | I can hardly believe that I've just recorded my 500th episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life. I had considered waiting until I had some major announcement to share or some massive breakthrough in my life to talk about during this podcast episode that marks a significant milestone reached. However, as I shared in this episode, so much of my life has been focused on wanting to live my life in "Fast Forward" from one mountain top experience to another. The decision to record this episode on what seemed to be just an ordinary day in my life actually speaks a lot about how far I've come in living a more balanced and healthy lifestyle. When I first hit the record button, I didn't really think I had more than 10 minutes of content on my mind to share. However, as always, once I started going, I found that I had a lot more on my mind than I originally anticipated. Overall, the thoughts that came to my mind as I was recording, I feel are worthy of a 500th episode of a podcast after all. I want to thank each and every one of you who listen to this podcast. It's because of you that I feel more accountable to live out the truths that I am learning on a daily basis. I look forward to the opportunity to share another 500 episodes with you! 499 PABL – BlogWorld NYC Recap | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I do my best to share the amazing experiences that I had while in NYC for BlogWorld. I talk about hanging out all day with Fred Firestine, the gspn.tv meetup in Bryant Park and dinner at John's Pizzeria. I share the story of how I was invited to be a speaker at BlogWorld LA on the first day of the conference and how I forced myself out of my comfort zone to meet all sorts of interesting people. This trip was an amazing opportunity that has already opened up doors to other amazing opportunities. I'm so thankful for each of the doors that God seems to open for me on this journey. You would think that I would stop worrying about trying to always be in control of the future and feeling as though I always need to know what's coming up next. 498 PABL – Making Difficult Decisions That Many People Will Not Agree With | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share a recent decision that I had made and why I made it. I hope that this episode will clearly explain why I recently deleted a particular group from the gspn.tv community site. Since I made the decision, I feel a major weight lifted off my shoulder. However, it is still difficult to get over the fact that some folks will simply disagree with my reasoning and will have wished that I had done things differently. In January of this year, I made a commitment to God that His approval would be all that I pursue to seek with the decisions that I make. This is a commitment that is difficult to adhere to when you are as much of a people pleaser as I am. With that said, I did not make this decision lightly. While this was not the "timing" that I would have like to have chosen, it was the decision that I was ultimately going to go with in the end. This episode will explain most of what has been going on in my mind about this subject. After you get a chance to listen, feel free to leave a comment here on this post! 497 PABL – Something Big On The Horizon | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share my thoughts on the fact that I have not had any intentional physical activity for the past several weeks. I share that while I'm still experiencing a great deal of margin within my schedule, I have noticed that I have been struggling with my early to bed and early to rise routine since Easter Sunday. This is something that desperately want to fix immediately so that my schedule doesn't spin out of control. I share how I have succesfully found some great ways to connect with my children and I'm looking for opportunities and avenues to continue to do this on a deeper level. I share how I have allowed a little bit of anxiety about the future to creep in. However, since recording this, some cool things have happened with adding some late arrives to my podcasting A to Z course which has inpsired me that I should start as early as this week to prepare for my July Podcasting A to Z course. I talk about an amazing opportunity that has come up with an invitation to speak and share the gspn.tv story at the BlogWorld And New Media Expo in New York in just two weeks. Details can be found at http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/bwe2011nyc. I'm also planning a meetup on Monday, May 23rd for folks in the gspn.tv community and you can get more details about that at http://ning.it/mGYrMr. Overall, when I recorded the episode, I shared how I felt that the visibility is quite low as it relates to how far into the future of gspn.tv and Podcast Answer Man that I can see. I know that there are many successful things that I have done that I can repeart. However, I get a sense that perhaps there's another big step on the Horizon. 494 PABL – It Took Two Days To Record This Episode! | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I record from inside the studio to get caught up on the back catalog of audio feedback that had been submitted for this podcast over the past two months. Wayne Henderson called in to say how much he has been enjoying the occasional audio boo updates that I have put online. You can listen to those at http://audioboo.com/gspn. Eve called in quite some time ago to share her reaction to episodes 475 to 478 which were titled “My Catholic Weekend Parts 1 through 4.” Jon Wilkerson called in after listening to episode 483 and correctly guessed that I had got too caught up in trusting in my own personal abilities. He was right and I’m so glad that God had worked on my heart in this area since that time. Santos Auli called in regarding episode 485 titled “The Year of Providence.” I’m very happy to have had the chance to get to know him better and I appreciate that he has since become a gspn.tv Plus Member. Jenn from Ohio also called in regarding episode 485 to say that this episode was exactly what she needed to hear. I so appreciate this type of feedback. I did give an update on how Plus Membership income is going since the decision to go ALL FREE was made. I hope that my sharing this didn’t come off as begging people to respond. Honestly, God has been providing in amazing ways as the result of my consulting/coaching side of my business. I do believe that income from the content/community helps me to keep my focus on creating the content and the efforts necessary to build the environments that foster the community building that takes place here at gspn.tv. However, I know that no matter how God chooses to provide for our financial needs, the content and community of gspn.tv is why I decided to do what I do for a living. I am trusting in God to provide however He desires. Maggie had called in about Tim Farris’ book “The Four Hour Body.” I’m personally skeptical about this book, even though I’ve never read it. I heard a lot of buzz when the book first came out and I was turned off by some of the things folks had shared with me. I’m wondering what Maggie, or anyone else in the community, feels about this book after reading it. Zen Runner called in to ask me what my fitness plans and goals are for this year. I have a pretty clear breakdown that looks something like this: - My goal is to get to 210 by the end of April 2011 - To get below 200 by the end of May 2011 - To get to 190 by the end of June 2011 - To get to 180 by the end of July 2011 - To get to 170 by the end of August 2011 - To get to 160 by the end of September 2011 - To get to 154 by the end of October 2011 Somewhere in here I shared why Matthew now has a cast on his arm for four weeks, getting new glasses, and several other things that I have probably failed to mention here in the show notes. I think the funniest thing is that this episode literally took me two days to record. After you get a chance to listen, feel free to leave a comment here on this post! 493 PABL – Margin Achieved Though Faith Trust And Provision | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share how I feel that I really have achieved a sense of margin in my day to day life through my faith and trust in God's provision. I know that it's only been been two days since I last recorded an episode of this podcast and that recording was just released yesterday. However, perhaps you can simpy look at this additional episode as a means of me making up for the fact that I had skipped a few weeks. At any rate, I share a lot in this one hour episode. I talk about how much weight I've lost in the past month. I talked about my continued thoughts on planning and preparing for the future and how that relates to being flexible enough to go with the leading of God when He may inspire us to go in a different direction that we had planned. I share how I was tempted to say "yes" to a request to continue my class' access to me via ongoing Q&A during the month of April after I had just offered to the class to continue their access with me during the month of May. I share why and how it was an easy decisoin for me to respond "no" even when that's not been very easy for me in the past. I also made a decision to raise my consulting rates effective April 1st. I share why I've made this decision. I'm actually continually reminding myself why this is an important step for me and you just get to hear the conversation that I have with myself about it. ;) This episode also shows the importance of being able to just stop and take in the moment as I sit and watch a group of ducks swimming around in the water. Really, this is just an overall upbeat and positive reflection of what's been going on in my life as a direct result of seeking God first, doing all the things that He has laid on my heart and trusting in Him to provide for my every need. I hope that it's a source of encouragement for you to do the same. After you get a chance to listen, feel free to leave a comment here on this post! 492 PABL – Career Day At Kids School | In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share how things went after having my children invite me to participate in their schoo's Career Day. I had done this previously, in my life as an insurance agent. However, this time around, I went to share my career as a podcaster. I also give an update on how things are going with my podcasting course that I'm leading and even some exciting news about how I will be doing the class again in May. The episode helps demonstrate just how things are going with my desire to add more margin in my daily life. More than anything, I believe this episode demonstrates the power of what I shared in episode 485 where I talked about the "Year of Provision." This is the first place that I've publicly announced my new increased consulting rate for one on one consulting. As I move forward, I'm finding that the most efficient use of my time in helping people are in groups like the course the I'm currently teaching or through the use of digital video tutorials. I still enjoy one on one consulting, however, I'm definately moving forward with a more intense focus on the areas where I can help the most number of people with the least amount of my time so that I may continue to maintain margin in my life and have more time to spend with my wife and children. Finally, I also give an update on how things are going with my spiritual journey of waking early in the morning and spending time reading Scriptures before doing anything else. Oh, and I manged to squeeze in an update about my currently weight loss of 3.8 pounds in the past week. Be sure to check out http://gspn.tv/scale when you get a chance. 491 PABL – Living Living Life With Purpose | In this episode of Pursuing A Balnaced Life, I am all over the place. However, a majority of the episode is devoted to my thoughts on how I had set a very lofty goal for myself to achieve within a six week period of time. I share how I believe my faith in the fact that it would become a reality played a part in actually making it a reality. To be honest with you, I am almost hesitant to release this episode in fear that some might think that I’ve gone a little too far into the “name it / claim it” territory. I assure you that this is not the case. However, there are some principles that go along with faith and believing things are possible before we can actually come up with plans to achieve them. I also provide another update on how things are going with gspn.tv Plus Membership now that we are approaching the end of our second month offering all our content for free. 489 PABL – 7 Days of Great Temptation | I recorded this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life last week. As this is being released, I am actually on a cruise ship with an unlimited amount of food for me to consume. It is my prayer that I will be able to make it through this entire trip with a great sense of self discipline as I enjoy all good things in moderation. I also shared a little about how yet more website hosting issues that I had been facing and how I addressed them. I tried not to be too geek about what I shared. Listen to find out how things went after the first full month into “The Year of Provision.” Did God come through, in spite of all the things things that God laid on my heart for me to cut back on? You’ll get to hear all the details in this episode. Also, in this episode, I share how I’ve really been feeling the need to practice what I preach in the area of living my life with more margin in it. Once again, God has called me to stretch my faith by cutting even more things out of my weekly schedule, to stay focused on the the things that are the wisest use of the time that I’ve been given, and to stay faithful in trusting in Him to provide so that I can can be the husband and father that He wants me to be. As I’m typing these show notes. I’ve pretty much done most everything I need to do to promote the Podcasting A to Z group study. 485 PABL – The Year of Providence Begins | This is my very first podcast of the new year! Recently, I shared on Twitter that, I've concluded that 2011 will be "The Year of Providence!" Eager for the direction & resources that God will provide in this new year! In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I give a little more background as to what I meant behind this statement. When I looked up the definition of the word “Providence” I found the following statements to be in line with what God has been laying on my heart. - God foresees the future and He is providing care and direction for the people of the earth. - God, who is everywhere, is directing the universe and the affairs of humankind with His great wisdom. I share in the first few days of this new year, God has clearly given me some direction for which to build the foundation of how I am to move forward in this new year. The following is a list of seven things that I know that God is calling “ME” to do. 1. Do not worry or be anxious about anything, but seek God first in everything! 2. Allow my body rest by getting a good night’s sleep. 6 to 7 hours on average. 3. Wake early in the morning. (This means going to bed at a decent hour). 4. Devote myself to reading God’s Word daily. 5. Keep a private journal to record the works that God is doing in my life. 6. Pray each morning for God to guide my goals, priorities and decisions for each new day. 7. Stop trying to please everyone! Understand that I can’t make everyone happy with who I am, the decisions I make, and the things that I say. The following is a direct quote from George Muller’s auto-biography: George Mulller’s thoughts on Sleep: Children of God should be careful not to allow themselves too little sleep since few men can do with less than six hours of sleep and still be well in body and mind. As a young man, before I went to the university, I went to be regularly at ten and rose at four, studied hard, and was in good health. Since, I have allowed myself only about seven hours, I have been much better in body and in nerves when I spent eight or eight and a half hours in bed. Someone may ask, “But why should I rise early?” To remain too long in bed is a waste of time. Wasting time is unbecoming a saint who is bought by the precious blood of Jesus. His time and all he has is to be used for the Lord. If we sleep more than is necessary for the refreshment of the body, it is wasting the time the Lord has entrusted us to be used for His glory, for our own benefit, and for the benefit of the saints and unbelievers around us. Just as too much food injures the body, the same is true regarding sleep. Medical persons would readily agree that lying longer in bed than is necessary to strengthen the body actually weakens it. It also injures the soul. Lying too long in bed not merely keeps us from giving the most precious part of the day to prayer and meditation, but this sloth leads also to many other evils. Anyone who spends one, two, or three hours in prayer and meditation before breakfast will soon discover the beneficial effect early rising has on the outward and inward man. It may be said, “But how shall I set about rising early?” My advice is: Do not delay. Begin tomorrow. But do not depend on your own strength. You may have begun to rise early in the past but have given it up. If you depend on your own strength in this matter, it will come to nothing. In every good work, we must depend on the Lord. If anyone rises so that he may give the time which he takes from sleep to prayer and meditation, let him be sure that Satan will try to put obstacles in the way. Trust in the Lord for help. You will honor Him if you expect help from Him in this matter. Pray for help, expect help, and you will have it. In addition to this, go to bed early. If you stay up late, you cannot rise early. Let no pressure of engagements keep you from going habitually early to bed. If you fail in this, | 1/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

484 PABL – A Time of Quiet Self Reflection! | I’ve spent the past ten days in a time of quite self reflection. During the past three days, I’ve read the entire auto-biography of George Muller. This episode is a follow up from episode 483 of Pursuing A Balanced Life, where I share just what God’s been laying on my heart these past few days. I still don’t have a clear vision of what 2011 will look like. However, I have this strange feeling that I’m not supposed to even concern myself with that until after the new year starts. I have full faith that God will not only provide in amazing ways, beyond my imagination, but that I’ll also be flooded with fresh new inspiration on a regular basis as I move forward through the new year. 483 PABL – The Dark Days of December 2010 | From January through November, the year of 2010 brought forth an amazing number of blessings as it relates to the success of my business pursuits. I never dreamed I'd be sitting here in December of this same year expressing the types of fears and anxieties thave been dealing with over the past two weeks. In this episode, I share a majority of the heaviest things that have been on my mind and how I've ulimately ended up in the place where I am today, feeling uninspired, with a lack of creative thought, low on motivation, and a sence of lowered self confidence. Now I'm sure that this is just a season of life that has come to pass and that it's a result of being sick for a few weeks and the fact that I'm dealing with a lot of changes in my life. I'm not going to sugar coat it and tell you that I am on the rebound and that I can sense the motemtum moving in the right direction. However, I can tell you that I seem to be at another crossroads in my life's journey and though I thought I had a good feeling about the direction my life was heading, I seem to have this feeling that I'll be wondering, once again, into the unknown. I only pray that I can rediscover the faith that brought me this far! And that I can continue to find success in 2011, not only in my business, but in my marriage and parenting as well. 481 PABL – Boston Underground Soundseeing Tour | One of my favorite things about visiting cities like Boston is the subway. I actually look for reasons to take the subway to get from one place to another within the city. It's just a great deal more fun and efficient than driving everywhere. Have you every played a game of Whac A Mole before? It's a game you typically find at an arcade and you are given a rubber mallet and there are several holes where moles will randomly pop up and the goal is to whack the mole before he goes back underground. In this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I invite you to join myself and Erik Fisher on a fun game that I made up called Boston Whac A Mole. I had this idea that we would get on the subway trains and randomly, without any rhyme or reason, choose to pop up above ground to look around that portion of Boston. Early in the episode, I mentioned that this episode may not be all that exciting and that it might not be very entertaining content. However, by the end of the episode, I felt as though this may have been a better sound seeing tour of Boston than I had actually planned it ahead of time. If anything, it demonstrates just how many wonderful things can be found just wondering around the streets and subway stations of Boston. Somewhere near the end of our journey, we ran into Dan Blakeslee. You can check out his website here. Dan is a musician playing some really great music in the Park Street Red Line station. After attending the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Blakeslee ventured to Boston. He toiled with his acoustic in the smoke-laden subways before slowly rolling his influences (Leonard Cohen, Red House Painters, The Smiths, Jeff Buckley, Vic Chestnut, Radiohead, Tom Waits and Johnny Cash) into his own eclectic blend of music with chameleon-like appeal. I enjoyed his music so much that I went over and purchased one of his CD's. He may have inspired me to fire up the recording for another episode of Musically Challenged. 480 PABL – Why You Should Not Ask Me About A Career In Insurance | This episode kind of came out of the blue. I recently received a phone call from an old friend. Here I thought he was really excited about the opportunity to enter into a new career as an insurance agent. He had called to see if I would be willing to share my thoughts on his new career choice. I didn't want to discourage him with my thoughts on the subject, so I simply sent him an email telling him that I'm probably not the best person to turn to if he were looking for encouragement and support with such a decision. I warned him that I have a pretty negative view of the career that I left behind. He emailed me back and indicated that he did have some concerns and would very much appreciate my thoughts on the matter. Well, in this episode of Pursuing A Balanced Life, I share the thoughts that I shared with this friend. I would highly suggest that you start with episode 475 of this podcast which is the first part in this series. Also, full show notes can be found on that episode. This episode actually covers the official CNMC event itself as well as my attendance of a Catholic Mass. It was the first time in 24 years since I had been to Catholic Mass. I will tell you that I actually considered not releasing this episode. In fact, this episode is very heavily edited. In it's original form, I feel like I had shared a little too much. I wonder, as I post these show notes, if there is still a little too much shared here. However, as I listened to the edited version back, I do feel that I give a very genuine and authentic reaction to what it was like for me to attend this Catholic mass. I want to say, for the record, that I found the folks from SQPN to be among the most generous, caring, and charitable people I have ever met. I felt at home with them and very much felt as though I was a member of their family. After you get a chance to listen, feel free to leave a comment on the blog! 456 PABL – Three Words That Could Change My Life? | Pursuing A Balanced Life Podcast Three Words That Will Change My Life? Right-Click Here To Download MP3 Version of this Free Episode I started recording this episode a little after 2 o'clock in the morning. I had received some audio feedback from a client, and good friend, named David Doucette. His audio feedback was 16 minutes and 3 seconds in length. Near the beginning of his message, he mentioned that he had three words to share with me that had the potential to change my life in a positive way. Ever since I listened to that message with those three words, I've not been able to stop thinking about it what it would mean to me if I were to follow through with the advice provided in those three words. This is one of those episodes that I will be pointing people to for quite some time! 425 Pursuing A Balanced Life – Follow Your Passion And The Money Will Follow | Pursuing A Balanced Life Follow Your Passion And The Money Will Follow In this episode I share my thoughts on the phrase, "Follow your passion and the money will follow." This is exactly what I did just almost two years ago and I've certainly found the statement to be true. I share some of the amazing things that have happened as a result of focusing on my core talents and abilities. I also share that I don't think going off and starting your own business is for everyone. Though, I do believe it would be a great fit for more people than actually realize it. On my journey, I've learned some things that I think are critical to consider when thinking about leaping out there on your own. * Surround Yourself With Positive People * Must have the support of your spouse * Passion is required * Some natural talent must exist as a foundation * Determination - No escape clause. * Self Discipline - Can be learned through accountability * Faith After you get a chance to listen, feel free to leave a comment here on the blog! 424 Pursuing A Balanced Life – Learning Along The Way | In this episode, share some thoughts after a few days of being out of my normal routine. I had enjoyed having our friends Anne and Valerie visit with us for a few days. While they were here, we had an impromptu meet up to celebrate Anne and Valerie's birthday. There was pizza, chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, and zucchini bread. So there was a LOT of empty calorie foods to be had by all. Unfortunately, I allowed myself to indulge a bit more than I would have like with these snacks. That being said, I did try to compensate by putting in a bit of extra effort into my daily physical activity. When it was all said and done, I ended up on the scale yesterday with no pounds gained. I've definitely learned a few things from that experience and hope to even make better decisions the next time I'm in similar situations. I also share some thoughts abut the recent additions to the gspn.tv Plus Membership Community. We actually added 8 new Plus Members in the past 7 days. This was a huge blessing and helped to confirm so many things about the direction that we are heading. After you get a chance to listen, feel free to leave a comment on the blog! Some Thoughts About Setting Goals – PABL Episode 413 | Happy Monday to you all. As most of you know by now, Monday is my weigh-in day. I'm very excited to announce that I have lost an additional 3 pounds this past week. That means that I've lost a total of 24 pounds in the past two months! Not only that, but my waist size as gone from 46 inches down to 41.25 inches since May 1st, 2009. I can't begin to tell you how great I feel compared to how I felt daily before. In this podcast episode, I share some feedback that I had received in the gspn.tv community forum regarding podcast episode 412. In it, Mary M. wrote... Hey yall! I don't want to be rude but please hear me out and realize that I have good intentions. Ok, so I am listening to PABL episode #412. Throughout the episode Cliff is talking about his "official" goal is to do physical activity 5 days per week. Really Cliff?? I think you have set your "official" goal low on purpose. You have stated many times that when you don't get your physical activity all 7 days it is a "failure" of a day, but then justify it because your "official" goal is only 5 days per week. I believe that your "actual" goal, the one you really want, is to do physical activity all 7 days per week. I think that in the beginning you set your goal to 5 days per week for the "just in case" moments but that as time has gone by, you have proven to yourself that you can do physical activity everyday and still be productive. I believe that your goal of physical activity 5 days per week isn't your "GOAL", but your "MINIMUM" that you would be comfortable with if necessary. And if you were really honest with yourself, I bet you would be very "unsatisfied" if you only did physical activity 5 days. I believe that if you were to really search your heart, you are trying to put in physical activity every day. Maybe it is time to set a new goal. Not meeting it all the time is fine for special occasions (like a family reunion or meeting with a friend for a movie screening). If you are going to bed every night with the intentions of getting up the next morning and doing physical activity then THAT IS TRULY YOUR GOAL!!!!! Please don't take this the wrong way, cause I love ya!! She also followed that up with this... Ok, so I finished the episode and had some more thoughts. According to dictionary.com the definition for GOAL is: 1. the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end. I guess that my problem with the episode is your use of the word. A goal should be something that you strive to achieve, not just the minimum you would be happy with. You are already past the physical activity of 5 days a week, so anyway...sorry for the rant. A majority of this episode is my response to this this feedback. I want to post some highlights from what I shared here for the blog. First of all, here is what I think about when I talk about setting goals: Goal setting is the process of deciding what you want to accomplish and devising a plan to achieve the result you desire. Goal setting is a two part process. Step one is deciding What You Want To Do. Step two is working toward the accomplishment of that Goal. Many people know what they want to do but have trouble creating a plan to get there. Goals without action plans are just words. Another way of saying that is that a goal without action plans are nothing more than desires. When creating a plan to achieve your goals, I think it is important to evaluate your goal to make sure that it has all of the following characteristics. Your goals should be Realistic / Attainable. Your goals should be specific and detailed. You goals should be measurable. And finally, I think it is important to evaluate your goal in light of whether or not it adds to or or distracts you from your pursuit of a balanced life. Regarding the thought of me setting my "official" goal low on purpose, I'd have to disagree. When I first set this goal, | 6/29/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

411 Pursuing A Balanced Life – More Than Just Health And Fitness | Oddly enough, too much focus and attention on the Health and Fitness aspect of our lives can cause our lives to be thrown off balance. Since May 1st, I've been pursuing a healthier lifestyle that incorporates a generous amount of daily physical activity. I have also had a major paradigm shift in the way that I look at food and its nutritional value. While I've been devoting a large portion of this blog and podcast to the topic of Health and Fitness, I've been just as focused on focusing more attention to the other areas of a balanced life such as Community, Work/Career, Family, Faith, Personal Development, and Recreation. It's a balance between Health/Fitness and all of these areas of our lives that truly cause us to enjoy the abundant life that God has provided us. In this podcast episode, I share several things that took place over this past weekend. Prior to my focused pursuit of a Balanced Life, I would not have been able to enjoy all the events things that took place. However, because of the values and principles that I've been learning and applying to my life, I found myself living in the moment on a more consistent basis. By the way, I mentioned that when I posted this episode, I'd put my weigh-in day results in the show notes. I'm excited to tell you that I've lost another 2 pounds in the last seven days for a total of TWENTY ONE POUNDS LOST SINCE May 1st! 409 Pursuing A Balanced Life – PABL Round Table Discussion | I am very excited to release this episode of the Pursuing A Balanced Life podcast. This is the audio recording from last night's PABL Round Table Discussion. Those you will hear in this call are Edith Baker, Patti Bagadion, Amanda Black, Erik Fisher, Patrick Greer, Sharon M., Maggie Mack, Richard Marcotte, Cliff Ravenscraft, Stephanie Ravenscraft, Mark Tafoya, and Stephanie Weak. The conversation was a great way to demonstrate that Pursuing A Balanced Life is a goal of people from many different walks of life. I think my favorite thing about last night's conversation was that even though our community is made up of people who are all at different places in their life as it relates to the current balance of their lives, we are all on the same journey together. No matter where each of us are at, we can all encourage and inspire each other equally. We all add value to the conversation! We will be doing another PABL Round Table Discussion Very Soon! 400 PABL – Making It A Top Priority | This morning I achieved a new goal. I woke up at 5am. I didn't even hit the snooze button once! This is something I've been trying to work toward as walking every day has become a Top Priority for me.It's been 19 days now and I've walked a minimum of 3.5 miles every day, with most days reaching between 5-8 miles walked. Recently, I've been very blessed (Thank You Lord!) with my consulting business growing, audio equipment sales increasing, and remaining consistent with the production of all our podcasts. Since I've made these daily walks a top priority and I want my life to be "BALANCED," I knew that I was going to have to be more self-disciplined in designing my working hours. In this episode of the podcast, I share how that's been going and how it's making me feel. As I type the show notes for this episode, it is only 8am and I've already walked 4.5 miles (over 9,000 stesps) today. I'm at "Inbox Zero" and I'm ready to get started on a project for one of my client's before I do the live "About The Church" podcast today with my friend DG at 10am. My Crazy Review
Cliff, I feel like I know you from listening to you for hours and hours between the two podcasts. Arrogant? No way. I'm sure sure if we all had the priveledge of knowing you in real life, we'd find you to be a humble, but fun-loving family man. I have to admit, a single-voice podcast is not as engaging as when you are able to throw Stephanie and Racheal into the mix, but for anyone who wants to get to know more about Cliff, this is obviously the podcast to listen to.
GO CLIFF!!!
Cliff does it again. I thought the Lost podcast was good. Maybe it's a sign that I don't have a life but I like hearing about this stuff. I can't wait for the Faithcast. This is a great podcast of one of the main people of the Generally speaking podcast talking about a story from his life or whatever. It's great. Get it.
A Crazy Life that encourages us all
Cliff does a great job on podcasts. I enjoy getting to know him out side of "LOST". His life is very encouraging. He and Steph's lives are honest and it is encouaging to my in my crazy life.
