Floyd Kelley III - Microsound | Today's Headphone Commute podcast comes from Floyd Kelley III. This mix is almost exclusively composed of tracks from Taylor Deupree's 12k label and Richard Chartier's LINE imprint, both at the forefront of experimental, minimal and microsound evolution. Microsound music isn’t for everyone. It takes a disciplined ear and a lot of patience. Many pass it off as non-musical. Some consider it too high brow. It took me years to really learn to appreciate it. Microsound artists can be included in the same rankings as 20th-century composers such as John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Boulaz, Pierre Henry, and Pierre Schaeffer. The terms: field recording, minimalism, tape music, musique concrète, electroacoustic, and avant-garde immediately come to mind... low light mixes – illusions of autumn | It still hasn't snowed on the east coast of the US. The temperature does dip below 30, but then there are days when it's over 50 degrees, and the sun is blaring into my studio, its warmth so strong I still haven’t turned on the heat. The trees have shed their withered leaves, but the earth is too warm for the flurries to stay. This latest mix from Dave Michuda is perfect for this morning. Titled Illusions of Autumn, the selector behind low light mixes takes you on an eclectic trip through Arve Henriksen, Daniel Lanois, Harold Budd, Steve Tibbetts, Maps and Diagrams and more... Matt van Ax - Music For Crawling Through Abandoned Cities | Matt van Ax is a good ol' friend of mine. In the late 90s Matt spent countless hours perfecting his DJing skills, creating seamless transitions of perfectly beat matched tracks across the kick-drum pounding genres. And even after numerous gigs in the clubs and underground parties across the globe, he still spins till this day. For this special podcast I threw a challenge at him, and asked him to create a mix out of _my_ selections. Specifically, I wanted Matt to create a journey across my favorite albums selected for Headphone Commute's Best of 2010 : Music For Crawling Through Abandoned Cities. I supplied the albums, Matt supplied the mix. The result is an 80-minute incredibly hypnotic journey in ambient, deep, and dub techno styles. And the beat never stops. Access To Arasaka - In:spire | While I could have made a mix of songs that made me want to become a musician, it seemed like a better idea to make one of songs that keep that feeling alive in me. These are tracks that I listen to while watching the sun mutate on its descent behind distant cirrus clouds, the day’s slow closing played out in the colors of autumn, streaked with trails from departing jets and shuttles. This is what I listen to while waiting at a red light in the city, my eyes tracing the sporadic flight paths of moths under the street lights. These are some of the songs that keep me inspired, and always will. For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com | 2/28/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Access To Arasaka - Re:pose | There are moments when one can feel claustrophobic in their own skin, when the world seems too vast, when the road to the future feels too complex. There are moments when you need to focus, when you need to meditate, when you simply want to remove yourself from the sum of all things. This is a collection of songs that do exactly that for me. This is for calming your overactive thought process, closing your eyes and drifting, and ultimately rebooting yourself. Snobo - A Rest From Intention | Today's feature Headphone Commute mix by Snobo, titled A Rest From Intention, is a totally horizontal selection of achingly beautiful electroacoustic works, with some old but evergreen ambient post-rock favorites thrown in for a good measure. Otherworldly in general, epic in places, and sometimes intimately lovely. Mixed on a late chilly night, under influence of volcanic ashes flying a few miles above the ground. As usual in such cases, no driving or operating machinery is advised; horizontal position, low lights and Shoyeido (preferably Kin-Kaku) are recommended. riverrun – inspirations | Daniel Land has quietly descended on these pages with his ambient project, riverrun, at the end of 2010. Low Light Mixes – The Landscape Listens | Today we’re presenting to you one of our favorite ambient journeys from Low Light Mixes. Although this mix was made in the dead of winter, we still feel that its calm nature can soothe away your daily worries, stress and aches. It definitely hits the spot on this side of the mixing board. Here’s Dave Michuda talking about the inspiration behind the mix: It’s the dead of winter, just trying to outlast the snow and cold, trying to make it to spring break. The music in this mix has a sort of lonely winter feel to it. The tracks are not too dark or depressing, they just seem to conger up images of vast, snowy landscapes. bvdub – 2 hours and 20 years | This weekend we have another outstanding mix for you! 2 hours and 20 years has been put together by Brock Van Wey, releasing under bvdub, exclusively for Headphone Commute. It is indeed special, since this is Brock’s first mix made in 15 years with moments of elation. It was made on a 2-hour morning bus ride from Shanghai, where Brock reflected on the last 20 years immersed in electronic music. Carried by his emotional ups and downs, the mix incorporates a verity of tracks along the memory lane. HC – Oceanica | Sun... Ocean... Calmness... Being in a meditative state of mind, attempting to clear out all thoughts and rid myself of negative energy, I put together a mix to compliment my breathing. Ruckspin – Ranking Studio Mix | About two years ago, Rob Booth of Electronic Explorations has introduced me to the new sound of dubstep. I’ve heard the wobbly sound of the London underground before. But this was something else. Cinematic, ethereal, and incredibly organic, with a rumbling bass and a syncopated beat. I was immediately in love with the output of Ranking Records. Artists like Ruckspin, Quark, and Planas have immediately grabbed my attention, and I’ve been a fan ever since. I am especially excited about this installment of our podcast featuring a special showcase mixed by Ruckspin of the label’s latest forthcoming and unreleased tracks. Your neurons are about to get very excited. For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com | 4/18/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HC – Our Shelter, Our Tomb | I am very excited to share this special mix with you! I originally put it together back in February, after I was finished with Headphone Commute’s Best of 2009. It was intended as a follow up to my popular Modern Classical Mix, featuring my favorite selections from 2009. The mix quickly became dark, nostalgic, and bleak. Originally featured on the truly wonderful Fluid Radio back in March, here it is, finally, for your enjoyment! Overcast Sound – April Ambient Mix | Canadian deep-techno duo, Michael Pettit and Jamie Drouin, producing under the moniker Overcast Sound, create "introspective compositions built from fragments of field recordings, oblique references to dub rhythms, and sweeping cinematic textures..." They have recently released a 3-track EP, Untitled 12 on Untitled and After label, which is highly recommended for fans of DeepChord, Quantec, bvdub, and anything on echospace [detroit] label. Mmm… did I get your taste buds wet? Then you will enjoy this showcase! For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com | 4/4/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

HC - At Home With Home Normal | In the first few months of 2010, Ian Hawgood, the owner of Home Normal, bombarded my mailbox with envelopes full of promos, and my ears with sublime ambient bliss. In 2009, Hawgood managed to publish eight releases, and this year he’s already on the way with another five! I spent a whole weekend enveloped in drones, early morning soundscapes, and experimental ambient music. And then I came up with a way to thank Ian. The following is a one hour mix composed entirely out of my favorite selections from Home Normal releases. It’s a perfect label sampler, if you will, showcasing the artist roster from one of the important, up and coming labels. | 3/21/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Shukry Adams - Ethereal Cinematicism | Hailing from South Africa, Shukry Adams mixes up his favorite selections of beautiful ambient, modern classical, drone, and dark ambient selections. Just look through the track listing to get a feel of the incoming wave of music which will cradle you for close to an hour. Broadcasting through the slow internet connections, Adams explains: I tried to create a soundtrack-esque atmosphere and sometimes subtle layering to create mood and to fluctuate the listener's emotions. I could tell you more, but in this case music speaks louder. | 2/28/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Mr. Tom - Polar | It's a chilly early morning, and I my feet sink into the hard shell of a snow that built up over the night. The sun warms my face, but the air is crispy and dry. I hurry towards my destination, in time with the beat, on my headphone commute. The music compiled in this mix by Mr. Tom features some of my favorite ambient dub and ambient techno artists, like Vladislav Delay, Lulu Rouge, Yagya, Trentemoller, and Gas, so I couldn't resist from sharing it with you. Appropriately titled Polar, the music wraps cold and empty white noise, into deep thumps of the bass and endless delays, so characteristic of the genre. HC - DSM-IV-TR | As my mood shifts from one plane to another, and the music bombards my ears with various styles, tones and rhythms, it's hard to stay grounded to just one genre. Today, I feel like glitching along with IDM. Tomorrow, I bop my head to hard pounding techno. In anger, evil drum'n'bass takes over my soul, then collapses in half-time to the vibrations of dubstep. How do I capture all of these swings in one swooping hour? For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com | 2/14/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jasper TX - From Midnight To Sunlight | Another exclusive mix prepared for Headphone Commute! This time, it's Dag Rozenqvist, aka Jasper TX, mixing up his favorite tracks to keep you warm in the night... In the past few years, Rozenqvist has really stepped up in his production of dark ambient and acoustic drone pieces. Jasper TX 2008 release on Miasmah, titled Black Sleep, received critical acclaim from all purveyors of minimalism. Last year, collaborating with Anduin, he released The Beinding Of Light (SMTG Limited, 2009), as well as one of my favorite albums of the year, Singing Stones (Fang Bomb, 2009). HC - Organic Ambient | OK. I screwed up... A year ago, right about this time, I made a set of mixes to showcase my favorite artists and releases of 2008. These were the Intelligent Breakcore and Modern Classical mixes that I already have shared with you on Headphone Commute. But there was one more that I have failed to publish. I can come up with many excuses for this - some of them are valid - hard drive crash has sent me on an agonizing search for backed up files across multiple media. But now the mix is here, and you can finally enjoy, before 2009 rolls over into another decade! Hecq - Mixtape One | Oi oi oi! Do I have a treat for you! I'm about to set off for a two week vacation, but before I go, I want to present you with an amazing mix from none other than Ben Lukas Boysen, aka Hecq! As you could have already guessed from these pages, I am a big fan of Hecq's dark and crunchy IDM and his amazing modern classical compositions. I usually end up including at least one of his tracks in most of my mixes. In the beginning of this year I sang praise to his latest album, Steeltongued (Hymen, 2009), following up with Two and a Half Questions With Hecq. In 2008, his Night Falls (Hymen, 2008) album arrived at Tier 1 of our Absolute Musts, in Headphone Commute's Best of 2008. And when I revisited the Top 50 of 2007, his album, 0000 (Hyman, 2007) showed up on the list once again. Even the owner of Tympanik Audio, Paul Nielsen, has revealed that he would be honored to have a release by Hecq on his label, in our Tympanik Audio Label Profile. Enough said? HC - Modern Classical | The original purpose behind this mix was to compile some of my favorite modern classical recordings of 2008. As I progressed through adding tracks one after another, this one hour compilation turned into a journey, full of dark passageways, creaking stairways, and dusty light. Traversing the abandoned cathedral that houses this sound, one can imagine unlocking cobweb doors to reveal sighing ghosts and distant echoes. The mood changes from dark to light, from evil to beautiful, from present to nostalgic. I have finally decided to share this music, because the featured artists here deserve recognition and my highest regards. Thanks to all the participating artists and labels who allowed me to include their work! HC - Intelligent Breakcore | This mix has been in the making for quiet some time. Maybe not in its actuality, but at least in my head. It all started when I was compiling Headphone Commute's Best of 2008 list at the end of December last year. I wanted to select some of my favorite tracks and create hour-long sessions. That lead into separation of genres into Modern Classical, Organic Ambient, and this one, Intelligent Breakcore. Of course, I'm about six months overdue now, but that only allowed me for squeeze in a few of 2009 releases. A-n-y-w-a-y... Here's for your pleasure sixty minutes of uninterrupted intelligent and dark goodness from some of my favorite labels. Enjoy, and if you like it, let me know, I'll post the other two mixes up here. Music For Introspective Rides
I have yet to download a mix that has disappointed me from HC.
From harsh breakcore to dubstep to microhouse to airy ambient, each podcast seems to further explore the realms of ear tickling frequencies.
Highly recommended.
Great way to discover artists!!
Since I discovered Headphone Commute, I've been loving the free mixes. They've been a great resource for sampling artists' music. And HC always gets great talent for you to hear. Many hours at work have been spent writing code to these mixes. The podcast has made it that much simpler to get the mixes, too....thanks HC!!!
